  • People still think this killer is even remotely capable of 3 gen strats?

  • Well, the reason I do it is very, very simple.

    Because I might as well.

  • I don’t think there’s any killer that DOESN’T need ANY changes whatsoever but the closest for me is probably Wesker.

  • This is still an issue with breaking Pinhead's chains as well iirc

Console controls are kinda poopass tbh

  • If I see a Meg in my lobby I know for a fact that I’m getting at least a 3k that match.

  • Most mature Dead By Daylight forum post

  • There’s a lot of perks here that I either don’t know how to change or don’t think need changed, but there’s a few perks here that I’ve wanted to see buffed for a while now, particularly on the survivor end.

    •No Mither

-Swap NM and Unbreakable’s recovery speed bonuses

    •Self-Aware/Fixated

-While walking, your scratch marks fade 10% faster

    •Bite the Bullet

-Now hides auras in addition to sounds

-Effects persist for 3 seconds after the healing action is interrupted

-While self-healing, ignore the Mangled status effect

    •Corrective Action

-Succeeding great skill checks grants a token, up to a maximum of 6 tokens

-Whenever a survivor fails a repair or healing skill check anywhere on the map, a token is consumed and the failed skill check is considered a good skill check

-When this happens, you and the affected survivor see each other’s auras for 5/6/7 seconds

    •Empathic Connection

    -Range limit removed

-Increases altruistic healing speed by 5/10/15%

    •Pharmacy

-The first time you open a chest, a Ranger Medkit is guaranteed

-If you have not yet opened a chest, grants the ability to rummage through a chest to receive a Ranger Medkit once per trial

    •Solidarity

-Increases altruistic healing speed by 15/20/25% while injured

-Self-healing from this perk cannot be regressed by Hemorrhage

    •Resurgence

-Applies on wiggling free from the killer’s grasp and when being healed from the dying state

-The self-healing caused by this perk cannot be regressed by Hemorrhage

    •Guardian/Babysitter

-Also activates when rescuing a survivor from the killer’s grasp or when healing a survivor from the dying state

  • I think at this point the perk just needs to die. Its overwhelmingly high usage has had quite possibly the longest longevity of almost any perk, build, killer, etc. in the entire game. It’s been an insanely popular meta perk since it dropped in 2017. I for one would be very happy if this perk’s use rate dropped dead after this patch.

All this rationalization doesn't change the fact Knight is a boring ass killer with boring ass power that no one likes playing against.

You’re absolutely right on the second part, couldn’t be more wrong on the first. Either way, though, not the point I’m trying to make.

Im putting them together because they're both just thrown into the same category: Boring 3 gen killers.

Most of what you're saying here about Knight is not even considered by the majority of people. He's also been a strong and complex killer yet many just viewed him as weak and boring. Which tbf, most people don't like playing control killers since the game is more fast paced and they're a bit more strategic, which not many people like

Skull Merchant falls into the exact same boat. Heavily misunderstood and carries a bad reputation because people refuse to learn new things. Is she strong? No, but she is far from the worst killer and far from just some basic M1 killer.

She might not be your taste, and I understand that. She's definitely meant to target a smaller demographic in terms of gameplay. But to me, she's just a few changes off from being perfect and those dev update changes are definitely a step in the right direction

I don’t see how she can be anything other than the worst killer. Her power is stiff, inflexible, and insanely easy to counter, and even if survivors play into it, the effects it yields are extremely underwhelming. Her power gives her some information and a bit of stealth, but because her drones are so pitifully easy to either walk around or just disable outright, the only time the information aspect is going to work at all without survivors hacking drones and then willingly keeping their claw traps on all game is if you constantly keep the drones in areas survivors are guaranteed to go—which, in 95% of situations, means “on generators.” And the stealth is, well, I think I’ve said my piece on the stealth. Her power does very, very little beyond give her information, but it’s very easy to prevent that information from getting to her, and because it does so little beyond just giving her information, the information it gives her is not something she does a good job of capitalizing on at all.

Moreover, the single biggest reason I think she’s the worst killer in the game is because how easily she’s outclassed in every regard. It’s one thing to have everything you do be outclassed by another killer who specializes in it, but still be a good jack of all trades. However, it’s another thing entirely to have every single thing you could possibly do be outclassed by another LOW-TIER killer, which is the horrible pit Skull Merchant falls in.

    Camping? Myers. Pig. Trickster.

    Snowball? Myers. Trapper. Trickster.

Chase? If you want my honest take, literally any killer in the entire game. Skull Merchant has by far the worst chase. Maybe that’ll change with the buffs but I honestly don’t think so.

Area lockdown, defense, etc.? Trapper. Doctor.

    Zoning? Trapper again. Doctor again.

Stealth? Any killer that has any kind of basekit Undetectable or Oblivious.

    Tracking? Doctor.

    Stall? Pig. Doctor.

    Mobility? Freddy.

She just exerts such little agency over the match. I’m going to be entirely honest, I don’t even think Skull Merchant is a good 3-gen killer. She has maybe two tiddlywinks of stealth to occasionally jump someone on a gen, but other than that—no lethality to punish people who attack her 3-gen or even just get Eruption value, no mobility to constantly move between gens, no innate slowdown—no, she’s terrible at 3-genning. The issue I see is that her power is so incredibly easy to counter and so unrewarding even if it’s not countered that relying on 3-genning is the only hope Skull Merchant has to do anything. That doesn’t make her good at it, because she isn’t good at anything.

I can’t think of a single situation where Skull Merchant would be more viable, more interesting, or more fun than any other killer in any given scenario. The only reason I even remotely like playing Skull Merchant is because I’m a horrible masochist who likes being an M1 killer so an M1 killer whose power is dedicated almost entirely to tracking means lots of M1 killer chases, and EVEN THEN Legion has been scratching that itch since he came out in 2018. When he was 110.

The trail is just one of many drone formations Ive found that worked. None of them work if you do them exclusively, they all have to be used together in order for them to work. Youre also not "wasting" 2 drones, theres quite literally nothing stopping you from recalling those drones at any point to use them for something more worth while.

Also her drones are very versatile. Similar to Knight where all 3 of his Guards should be used in different ways, her drones also have different uses. With Knight, people tend to just drop Guards at loops at then zone a Survivor and sure you can do that, but its far from his best option. (Its the easiest, but not the best)

With Skull Merchant you have information, zoning, and stealth. People are just playing her the easy way which is info, and thats nothing special. Do a 3 gen strat with literally any other killer and youll get the same result but just get it faster since the majority of killers have something to aid them in downing a Survivor. Using her drones simply for information is basically like shocking a Survivor as Doc but only to build their madness and not anti loop.

Its a process of getting the information, utilizing the stealth, and then getting the hit. This can be done either by a trail, a buffer zone, or singular placed drones at strong loops to limit their options and zoning them into an unfavorable spot. After basically ANY of these, you can recall your drones and go on to the next set up, there is literally nothing stopping you.

But hey, if you dont like her thats fine! Youre allowed to! I personally have been having a blast learning new things. I just find it a shame the reputation shes gotten

Knight’s guards actively patrol an area along a path that can take any shape and form according to the person drawing it, with greater bonuses rewarded to both the Knight and the guards for creating a longer path and making it work. The guards automatically chase survivors they detect independent of the Knight’s control and can also be sent out to smash destructible props at a distance—blocking the prop from use in the process which lends itself to its own special utility beyond the simple act of kicking (for example, using Assassin to block a gen with his extended breaking animation, or using him to kick a pallet and block said pallet while he’s interacting with it, which you can use to trap survivors on the same side of a god loop as you). In addition, each individual guard has their own numbers and characteristics, making any given guard better or worse at specific things than the other two, adding a learning curve to knowing when and where to use which guard.

Skull Merchant’s drones, on the other hand, are simple, stationary traps that, when deployed, do the same two identical, lackluster effects: Reveal survivors, and give you a clunky and inefficient stealth power. They don’t patrol. They don’t chase survivors. They don’t block props. They don’t damage gens or destroy pallets and walls. They have no variance among each other. They just sit there and give you basic information whilst occasionally limiting survivors’ basic information.

In terms of versatility, complexity, and depth, Merchant and Knight aren’t even close to comparable. Knight is in a completely different ballpark. He’s on another planet compared to Skull Merchant.

Skull Merchant’s power is extremely basic. The effects it has on the match are also extremely basic. The only mechanic she has that could give her uniqueness and depth—her stealth—is neutered and nerfed into a hideously clunky state and is an obvious tacked-on afterthought to what is very clearly the main focus of her power, which is surveillance. But her surveillance is about as complex and versatile as, well, Surveillance.

Also, as for zoning—No. Skull Merchant’s zoning is a meme, and an unfunny one at that. Even when you combine all the total effects of her drone’s meager chase tools—killer instinct, exposed, and a hidden red stain—on an M1 killer with no real lethality, that reeaaally doesn’t amount to much. The three effects combined are sort of alright at jungle gyms, but given how many loops are short, open, too strong to be mindgamed by a simple M1 killer, and/or have little LoS blockage, the KI + hidden stain are situational, and the Exposed is hardly scary against the most M1 killer in the entire game—if you can loop her while you’re exposed, you can loop her, period. Not to mention, it’s useless if the survivor is already injured.

The only zoning she’ll really have is after the buffs where she can pop a drone at a loop to gain a worse bloodlust, and even then, applying a bunch of haphazard chase buffs to an killer without an actual, proper chase tool is hardly a threatening zoning tool, especially when compared to real zoners like Nemesis, Demogorgon, Pyramid Head, Artist, Knight, Deathslinger—killers who can shut down entire loops in an instant with a single tap of the power button.

Everything she does, she does excessively poorly, and she does them in such a straightforwards way. The only inventive part of her power is incredibly clunky and is still very basic in practice as a result. She’s a very rigid, bland, shallow killer. I don’t see how you could even begin to put her in the same realm of versatility as Knight.

  • @Shroompy said:

Honestly her stealth does work pretty well, and the more I play her the more I realize jsut how versatile this killer is. Her being able to recall her drones with no cooldown is a big contributor to this.

What I like to do is when ever I see 2 Survivors at a gen, or I know some one is going to go to a certain area (such as going for an unhook) I leave a trail of drones while walking away. After getting a notification, I just walk back using the trail

This wont work every time as most people catch on after the first few times, but thats the thing. Her drones provide so much functionality that they arent meant to be used in one specific way. Ive been having so much fun with her, and I wasnt expecting that at all considering at first I just could not grasp how to play her. Knight was the same but I was able to catch on much faster since just a quick look at his wiki page is enough to know that each of his guards should be used differently

Both The Knight and Skull Merchant are such unique killers, its a shame that they have the reputation that they do simply because people want the easy way out

I couldn’t disagree more. Her stealth is incredibly clunky and restrictive, and her drones are the opposite of versatile. They do one thing and one thing only with an even remote semblance of consistency, and that’s tell you when survivors are near them.

The above scenario you described just proves my point; even if you only use two drones to create a “trail” of drones, you’re still dedicating half of your entire drone web to stealthily approaching a generator or a pair of healing survivors—in other words, 3-genning and camping/tunneling slightly better than normal—that, in your words, stops working after just a few attempts. Additionally, this entire play can easily be countered by just turning off one of the drones in your trail, greatly diminishing the reach and duration of your stealth and making it much less feasible to sneak up on them.

That’s not “good” stealth. That’s not “versatile.” That’s dumping at least half of your resource pool into accomplishing an extremely basic stealth play whose effectiveness yields diminishing returns and whose counterplay is easily attainable. Moreover, that whole maneuver is just doubling down on her one good strat of playing extremely defensively, which is what she’s been boiled entirely down to by all of the playerbase. Buffing a one-dimensional killer by reinforcing that one dimension does not add depth to her.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/V8YX5LR8XI5Q/image.png

this is what add-on are for. you can customize the way you play a killer through add-on's. This add-on increases stealthy potency. They're improving this to 50% except for fact that her base duration for undetectable is 2 seconds. so 50% of 2 seocnd is only 1 extra second. this add-on would be better if it increased duration by a flat number. For example, it increases duration of undetectable by +6 seconds for total of 8 seconds. this would allow you to spec into stealth play-style with skull merchant. I imagine it is not too effective in outdoor maps but could be interesting indoor maps like Lery's.

I am not dev or anything but I think the undetectable status effect within drones is not about the stealth but is about hiding red-light at loops to make it more difficult for the survivor to loop tiles in a drone area.

Even with that addon and the upcoming addon changes, at the absolute best her stealth addons only give her 2 extra seconds of Undetectable. It’s still a tacked-on, unreliable gimmick and, more importantly, it’s incredibly far from the main focus of her power, which is my main point. I think the direction they took her power in—pure surveillance—is wasted potential compared to what her power could have been—self-made stealth zones.

  • Only buff Dredge needs is doing something about locked lockers. Too easy to lock and too punishing for his power.

  • And the best part is, she's still going to be way worse at three genning than most killers. What's the point of having all that information when there's nothing in your kit that lets you capitalize on it? If you ask me to win via 3-gen and I have to choose between Wraith with Surveillance and no other perks, or Skull Merchant with a full gen kicking build, I'm taking Wraith without hesitation.

  • Yes, she's very easy.

  • The perk shouldn't be nerfed.

It just outright shouldn't be allowed to make it to live servers at all.

    • We've gone over the aesthetic and there's nothing really new here, so we'll skip this point. Though, for the record, you seem to have a really limiting view of what a horror villain must look like.
    • Sure, maybe hiding her identity wasn't it- in hindsight, I think it's far more that she wears a mask because she's a horror villain and them wearing masks is a very accepted trope. Either way, it's not out of place for her to be wearing a mask, and despite how "goofy" you think the manga thing is, it's still there and it's still not actually a problem because you don't like it.
    • Nothing really to add to the power thing. The point of her is pretty clearly that her traps give information and stealth, and it's only her current balance that prevents that from being an acceptable power, not the core design. Nothing new to respond to here.
    • I genuinely don't know what you mean by parts of this point, sorry. I don't want to derail into talking about whatever you mean by the Nemesis point or into pointing out that Trickster and Huntress aren't that alike because that's not the point here, so, I suppose I'll just waive that point for simplicity.
    • It's a direct response to your point about her lore not explaining her drones and other specific details, what do you mean what does it have to do with anything?
    • Okay, but, you just said "it doesn't tie into her lore, it's just in her lore". Like, do I even need to say more about that? There is one thing I'd like to add, though, which is that it plays into her background extremely heavily. Even setting aside that her father was a manga artist... her father was Japanese, and her mother is Brazilian. Two countries for which manga is a pretty big deal. That's why it's there to begin with.
    • You'd almost have a point there, except that explicitly, the stalking and contemplation of awful harm started when she was young, when her father was still around, and when the stories she was reading from her father were far more lighthearted. So, it was her inclination to stalk that led her to her first murder, and then she took inspiration from her father's (later) works. That's textual. There's also a clear difference between "making your own connections" and just, intuiting details that aren't spoonfed to you.

-You decided to stop arguing this point, so lol lmao. Though, for the record, your idea of what a horror villain can look like to fit that bill is far too lenient.

-Even if we pretend that literally getting your ideas from comic book villains isn't comical in and of itself: it doesn't fit her, and it just looks dumb. It's like Legion, edgy for the sake of being edgy. And if you can make the edge work, then that's fine. Edge has its place, especially in something as innately dark as horror. But her edge doesn't work. It's loud and garrish, and she looks more like a sci-fi action B-movie villain because of it.

-You decided to stop arguing this point, so lol lmao

-You decided to stop arguing this point, so lol lmao

-I mean, what does this point have to do with anything? What even was your point here? Okay, they didn't explain where she got her silly outfit from. How does that make her outfit any less silly?

-The name of the Skull Merchant is a footnote in her lore. Just like how throwing knives was a footnote in Trickster's lore, and that became his entire power. My point is, why are we choosing to focus on this off-handed mention of a fictional character as opposed to something that's actually, truly reflective of her? Hell, at no point in her lore does it she even adopt the moniker of "the Skull Merchant."

-Okay, she was a creep before she started reading the dark mangas. It's still pretty apparent to me that reading those mangas are very much what pushed her over the edge into becoming a full-blown serial killer. Also, no, she didn't murder anyone prior to becoming obsessed with the Skull Merchant character. She stalked a dude that she held a grudge against for the loss of her prestige, but it very explicitly states she did nothing to him in the end.

  • @jesterkind said:

    In order:

    • Her aesthetic, if we actually pull back and look at it, is: from the neck down, she's wearing a jumpsuit and she has a big mechanical knife weapon attached to her arm. So far, we're on some pretty standard slasher stuff, a little bit more out there than something like Jason but pretty reasonable. From the neck up, she's wearing a gas mask (still standard stuff), with one eye exposed (interesting flair, not functional but killer designs don't have to be 100% functional) that is studded with rhinestones (the one potential incongruous element, but not by much). Nothing objectionable until that very last part.
    • She wears a mask possibly to hide her identity while hunting, and because she took inspiration from her father's manga. It's a gas mask because she took visual inspiration from stories her father wrote (presumably). It's studded with rhinestones because she's rich and therefore prefers gaudy, tasteless displays of her wealth. It's fine to not like it, but the reasons it's there are either obvious, or not hard to intuit a possible reason for.
    • The thing is, while she is a trap killer, Trapper and Hag aren't actually her closest analogues. Her closest analogue, and even it's pretty far away because she's a surprisingly unique killer, would be Doctor; mapwide tracking. If you truly can't see the value of mapwide tracking, consistent stealth, and the occasional pressure of an instadown, I don't really know what to tell you. Just to head it off- I know she doesn't currently do that, but we're talking about her core design here, not her current strength.
    • BHVR have at best a mixed track record here. Trickster, Wesker, and Nemesis all had great changes from PTB to live and even further in subsequent patches- to the point that Trickster especially went from borderline unplayable to actually pretty solid overall. Knight took a little longer but got some okay changes when they came. Sadako is the best example of a killer that was weak on PTB and weak on live, but it's not as though she got nothing.
    • None of those things are required to be in the base lore, though? I'm not arguing that it wouldn't have been better to shift some of the focus away from her early life to put some focus on where she acquired her gear, but the part that's important is just that she's rich enough to have it. This is, at worst, a gap to be filled in by a tome. It's also not unique- a lot of the lore paragraphs are kinda paced weird, it's a problem I've noticed in other killers' lore too.
    • The name is still such a reach of a complaint, who even cares? We had this exact same supposed 'problem' with Trickster, another killer whose name is made more flashy than functional and ties into his lore rather than his power or appearance. This just flatly isn't something to get heated about, it's a minor annoyance at its very worst. It's okay for a killer to have a fun, campy name that doesn't make sense until you read the lore instead of a flat and boring functional one that just conveys what they do.
    • So I said I wasn't going to re-cover the lore thing, but if you'll bring it up again I will. That is, flatly, not why she kills people. It is why she styled her gear and appearance the way she does, but she kills people at first to further her corporate agenda, and then later just for sport. She's the rich person who hunts human beings, it's a very established horror concept. The Most Dangerous Game, if you need a clear example.

    In order:

-Her aesthetic is unintimidating and doesn't do anything to invoke images of slasher villains, and boiling it down to "It's just a jumpsuit" is just plain wrong. Put her in a single-file line against actual slasher characters and see how ridiculous she looks compared to them. There's a lot of games she'd belong in. Games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege—not DBD. Slasher villains' outfits are grimy and mysterious. Hers is loud and obnoxious. More importantly, she doesn't carry herself like a spooky killer. She carries herself like an Egirl with a superiority complex. She literally has a runway walk in-game. There is nothing slasher about her.

-"She wears it to hide her identity" doesn't work because half of it is literally missing. Half of her face is shown. As for the manga inspiration... that's still such a goofy piece of inspiration to take.

-Just because Doctor gives information doesn't mean she's more similar to him than Hag or Trapper. The killer who puts down traps is obviously more fundamentally similar to the other killers who put down traps than the killer who doesn't. Hell, Trapper and Hag give information too, in the exact same way that Smerchant does: When a trap is triggered, you know someone is over there. And no, all that tracking and "consistent" stealth (which is just plain wrong, her stealth is the worst and clunkiest in the game), plus the once-per-match Exposed, mean nothing when you have zero tools to capitalize on it.

-"Buffs" do not mean "good changes." Nemesis was a fundamentally problematic zoning killer with RNG-based AI minions on the PTB, and two years later he's still exactly that. Trickster was a training wheels version of Huntress with a power that's either complete garbage or blatantly overpowered depending on the situation with little in-between, and two years later he's still exactly that. The only reason Wesker's changes were good changes was because he was actually a well-made killer that they simply gave minor tweaks to off of PTB.

-What does this point have to do with anything.

-You keep insisting that her name ties into her lore. It doesn't. She ripped the name from a comic book character. It doesn't reflect on her aesthetic, background, or gameplay at all. And yeah, Trickster's name is still dumb as hell. And the reason it's so annoying is because the rest of her is so egregious that it's just a cherry on top of this expired cake.

-If you're going to emphasize making your own connections to figure out why she has a goofy bedazzled gas mask and other dumb nonsense about her, then I say the connection that she was inspired to kill people because her dad's comic books instilled that idea into her mind is pretty obvious. It explicitly says in her lore than when she wasn't being a business tyrant, she was outright obsessing over her dad's mangas. It's pretty apparent that, had she not been absolutely fangirling over a comic book where the main bad guy kills people, she probably would've used different methods than killing people to further her own gain.

  • @jesterkind said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3349825#Comment_3349825

Already covered why you're misrepresenting the lore, so we won't delve any deeper into that.

For the rest of this, let's see here... Aesthetically, she's obviously fine. Everything about her fits into DBD just fine, and the only even questionable element from that framing would be the bedazzled mask- which, of course, fits her as a character, and since it's hardly the most ostentatious thing killers have access to with cosmetics and such, it's clearly not a problem. It's perfectly reasonable for her not to be to anyone's specific tastes, of course, but we must be careful not to conflate "this isn't to my tastes" with "this is trash".

For the gameplay, the one thing you've been right on so far is that she's weak. What her power is meant to do is obviously fine, it'd be a perfectly serviceable power - traps that give you tracking, undetectable, and a little bit of pressure to force survivors to deal with the traps aren't a broken concept, after all, in fact it's quite refreshing to have a little variety without getting another chase-oriented power again. She is, though, too weak; the stealth isn't enough, the tracking is a little inconsistent, and the power gives too much info to survivors. These are all, of course, things that can (and some of them at least assuredly will) be fixed between PTB and live, and it is of course not something that makes this chapter in particular trash.

A lot of PTBs have weak killers, some of them weaker than the Skull Merchant. Remember PTB Trickster?

As for her elements not meshing, I gotta say that this is the complaint I understand the least. I somewhat understanding thinking her mask is a little out of place, but the rest of her pretty obviously works? High tech stalker utilising her obscene wealth to invest in better tracking technology, using drones she customised based on something she regards fondly. That works perfectly, there's nothing clashing about it? I think people are really tripped up by the background detail that she drew some visual inspiration from her father's manga, and think it's a bigger element of her concept than it actually is. The name, too, is just a reach of a complaint. Is it a problem now for killers to have flashy names that rely more on their story/appearance than their actual power? We're gonna have to go back and change quite a few of the ones we already have, in that case.

It's fine to just not like her. I don't understand the urge to justify that by making it out to be a case of objective low quality. Isn't it enough to just say "I personally really don't like her"?

    "Aesthetically, she's obviously fine."

Starting with this and I've already lost the ability to take you seriously. No, a Spy Kids villain is not aesthetically fine in DBD, let alone "obviously" fine. Her aesthetic IS trash, just objectively. It doesn't mesh with any aspect of her own self or the game she's in.

"the bedazzled mask- which, of course, fits her as a character,"

In what way? In what part of her lore would she be doing things that necessitate wearing a gas mask? Why is it studded with my 7-year-old sister's backpack's jewels? "Man, the ink from these corporate ledgers sure are making it hard to breathe. Better put on my gas mask that doesn't work because half of it is missing." Like, how does it even remotely fit her?

"What her power is meant to do is obviously fine,"

It's bland, boring, and if you buff it to be not garbage she just becomes a monster 3-gen killer. Because people adore 3-gen killers, right? And even if you did buff her, why would I play her over Hag or Trapper? On a fundamental level, they just do what she does but better. Injuring and immobilization, or teleporting instantaneously to a nearby survivor, are just objectively fundamentally stronger than "Girl check your phone!"

"A lot of PTBs have weak killers, some of them weaker than the Skull Merchant. Remember PTB Trickster?"

Because if there's one thing BHVR is known for, it's making great changes off the PTB. Also PTB Trickster was way stronger than Skull Merchant, for the record.

"As for her elements not meshing, I gotta say that this is the complaint I understand the least."

It doesn't work at all. None of this is really fleshed out in her lore. They just smashed a bunch of concepts together and tried to make it work. Where did she learn to build these drones? Why does she look the way she does? How is she a Skull Merchant? Her look doesn't reflect any facet of her personality.

"Is it a problem now for killers to have flashy names that rely more on their story/appearance than their actual power?"

No, it's a problem when neither their story, appearance, nor power reflects that, which hers doesn't. If you're gonna be called "the Skull Merchant" then it should be a huge part of who you are, how you look, or what you do in-game. It should be indicative of your character or presence. The Wraith is called the Wraith because he's a ghost. The Trapper is called the Trapper because he traps people. The Twins are called the Twins because they're a pair of twins. The Oni is called the Oni because he's an Oni. The Knight is called the Knight because he's a knight. The Skull Merchant is called the Skull Merchant because... she likes manga. If her lore is that she's a corporate overlord who uses surveillance technology to hunt, why isn't she called "the CEO" or "the Magnate" or "the Overseer" or "the Boss" or any number of better, more fitting names? Why does it have to be the name of the OC I made on DeviantArt when I was 10 years old?

"I think people are really tripped up by the background detail that she drew some visual inspiration from her father's manga, and think it's a bigger element of her concept than it actually is."

And the reason people are tripped up about that is because it's really, REALLY goofy. "I kill people because my dad's comic books told me to!"

You're framing her lore that way even though it's inaccurate because you dislike her, is my point.

You're inclined to criticise every element as harshly as possible because you don't like her, too, hence you being harsh on every other element of her in this post- though, kudos for picking a killer to wrongly associate her with that people don't normally pick, I think you're the first person I've seen call her like Hag. That almost makes sense, honestly, it's way closer than Knight which is a really baffling association.

You know why I criticize every element of her so harshly? Because every element of her is complete and utter trash.

Aesthetically, she looks stupid. Between the generic tomboy look, the failed attempt at edge, and the obvious emphasis on sex appeal, she truly looks more like she belongs in Fortnite than DBD. All the minor details are boring, too. Her mori is boring, her music is boring, her animations are boring. Her face is a copy-paste of Trickster's with minor tweaks—hell, she's even wearing his necklaces.

Gameplay-wise, she's the most bland and underwhelming killer I've seen. She's a trapping killer, like Trapper or Hag, only her traps do diddly squat. Zilch. Absolutely bloody nothing. They're so basic and ineffectual that not only is she incredibly weak, arguably the weakest killer, but there's absolutely zero depth to her power. All her power is, is free tracking, with no means to capitalize on the information you're given. All you can do is put them down in areas that a killer with absolutely no lethality or mobility has any hope of pressuring—so, three gens. Your power is the perk Surveillance.

I've already voiced my discontent with her lore. I genuinely feel like "the Girlboss" would be more fitting than "the Skull Merchant" at this point.

All of these poorly-done aspects of her are completely inconducive to each other, as well. Why is she called the Skull Merchant? Because she read it in her dad's manga? Completely ignoring how stupid that is, if she did take inspiration from this Skull Merchant character, then she ought to be acting out in a way that's worthy of a title such as "the Skull Merchant." Where's the part when she sells skulls? What about her power reflects her being a Skull Merchant? The skulls taped to her drones? Is that it? Where's the "Merchant" part? Is it because she's a ruthless corporate overlord? Then what part of her power reflects that she's a ruthless corporate overlord? Where did she learn to build the drones and the go-go gadget extendo claw she uses in-game? Why does she look the way she does? What about her look reflects her corporate ruthlessness or her merciless hunting? Why is she wearing half of a gas mask? Why is her gas mask BEDAZZLED?

Everything about this killer feels rushed at best and lazy at worst. It SCREAMS "filler content." And this isn't even getting into the survivor side of this update, because believe me, I have a few things to say about the new perks.

If you wanna be reductive and read it through the worst possible lens because you don't like her, sure.

You've got it backwards. I don't dislike her lore because I dislike her. I dislike her because I dislike her lore.

And her Fortnite-tier visual design. And her Hag-at-home power. And her one-dimensional gameplay. And pretty much everything about this irredeemable piece of filler content.

That's not her lore at all, lol, she became a killer because she's a sadistic stalker who wanted to rid herself of corporate competition and then gained a taste for doing it. One of the cooler killer backstories in a while, as far as I'm concerned.

I think it's fine she took some inspiration from her father's manga, I think that's a neat detail.

No, her lore is that she's a fatherless weeaboo who went on the sigma grindset. She's literally a Redditor as a DBD killer. Her lore reads like a bad Legion fanfiction.

DBD Mobile rectifies this. You can see all the perks all the survivors are running in the lobby loading screen,

Only if you are also a survivor. Killers don't see the survivors' perk loadout. Interestingly, they can see how many perks each survivor has, whether they are brought an item and (if so) how many add-ons it has, but not specifically what any of those are.

That's still leagues above what the base version of the game has.

  • @Piruluk said:

If you could see perks, people would just dodge lobbies endlessly

I get the community is full of people with the mental age of a first-grader with a concussion, but I highly doubt it'd be that bad.

  • I think this moreso lies with an issue I've taken up with this game for a while now, and that is the fact that the game just does not tell you anything about what anyone else in your match is running. You have no idea what someone has in their build until you see them use it.

Matches can be won or lost because someone didn't anticipate someone to bring one out of well over a hundred perks. Lose because you didn't anticipate the one person you decided to slug would have Unbreakable. Lose because the totem you thought was Crowd Control was actually Haunted Grounds and your teammate DC'ed because they got instadowned as soon as it popped. Lose a vital chase because someone across the map activates Floods of Rage and the guy you're chasing has Distortion and his scratch marks disappear (yes, this one has actually happened to me). Go down immediately because you had no way of knowing the killer was running the Endfury-Hubris combo. Get grabbed by a Wesker because you positioned yourself around his dash not expecting him to have Golden Egg. Never get any value out of your healing build because you didn't assume that the killer was going to be Plague. Didn't get Solidarity value because your teammates don't know you have it and insist on healing you first. Lose out on Second Wind because the killer thinks it's Deliverance and sees it as an opportunity to tunnel. Teammates crowd around a boon thinking it's Circle of Healing but all go down because they didn't know you were doing adept Yoichi.

The sheer lack of information this game gives you is ridiculous and, frankly, a terrible design choice. It's this design choice that breeds scenarios like this, where you wait for entire seconds for a Dead Hard that they're not running. This happened a lot back when DSUB was meta, too, and it's going to happen some more after the Skull Merchant patch because "Oh, I need to tunnel this guy out, what if he has Blood Rush?"

DBD Mobile rectifies this. You can see all the perks all the survivors are running in the lobby loading screen, full on League of Legends style. Why doesn't the PC/console version of the game have this? Why do the devs outright design so many perks like Haunted Grounds that bank on this hideous lack of information, doubling down on this horrid design choice? Something seriously needs to be done about it. It's done far more harm than good for the game's health. Waiting ten years for a Dead Hard against someone who's not running Dead Hard is just the least of it.

  • My issue isn't that she's evil or anything. My issue is that she was motivated by her dad's manga. That's the most goofy fanfiction-tier Reddit nonsense I've ever heard in my entire life. Out of all of the possible motivations she could've had for being a murderer, and you make her an obsessed weeaboo? That's so silly.

Ace isn't that quiet. When I play killers I can hear him pretty far from me. Unless you are using a $10 earphones from Walmart of course

Ace is literally known for being the quietest survivor in the game

  • I wouldn't say she's like Knight. She's a lot more like Hag.

Difference between her and Hag is that her traps don't do anything.

And if you can determine proximity, you can determine direction. Triangulation is a thing, especially with knowledge of the local geography.

Possibly, if the map geography is telling enough. Oftentimes it isn't. And regardless of a given player's intuition, a terror radius is not inherently directional.

They change as the Killer gets closer or further away. Ergo, by listening to how they change, you can tell the direction a Killer must be.

    That's proximity, not direction.

So people who are hard of hearing or deaf just don't get to play? We don't actually know what the visual indicator for TR is, but it could also be directional (and should be IMO, because the sound is directional)

Since when have Terror Radiuses ever been directional?

Compare new OTR and old DS. Yes the perk itself OTR would be god tier in old 2nd chances meta. Where BT wasnt basekit.

-There is basekit BT now, but again, hit them off hook cause disable OTR. You down a DS survivor forced to slug them.

-The slug you have to wait gain them to recharge Dead hard

-Old DS forced killer to slug, which make Unbreakable extremely strong. New DS make Unbreakable hardly used.

You cant just compare the perks, but how a perk can be combo with other things, like Thana is weak but its strong with Plag/Legi

Just like Undying was totally untouched in 40 perks rework, yet no one uses then because Ruin hard nerf, because how strong Ruin is, is how strong Undying is

-I don't know about you but I'd much rather be having a survivor on the ground doing absolutely nothing than having to continue chasing them because I either hit them through BT or waited BT out just to get smacked with OTR.

-Just use literally any other exhaustion perk. I get it, DH is still busted, and you're losing out on that bustedness when you proc OTR's endurance hit. But you know what else is still busted? Free distance. And the other exhaustion perks give you free distance, even if you have Deep Wound.

-Unbreakable is still hilariously strong. Just because the small pp build got nerfed doesn't mean a perk that can single-handedly turn a hard loss into a hard win because the killer dared not to hook you isn't strong.

  • He's garbage in 95% of situations but in the 5% of situations where he's not garbage, he's so incredibly oppressive and annoying that people would rather jump on a spike.

    1. Spend the start of the match earning the privilege to be an M1 killer with no power
    2. Spend more of the match earning your actual power
    3. Pop tier 3 behind someone, get that sweet sweet instadown
    4. Everyone else knows what the W key on their keyboard does
    5. You move 15% faster than a running survivor so if you even manage to catch someone else before your tier 3 ends, you spent all that time letting the first slug get healed
    6. It took you several minutes to get 1 meaningful down
    7. Rinse and repeat until you're camping your 1 kill with a 99'ed tier 3 during the endgame
    8. Snowmball killur

Is it any wonder any Myers worth their salt just runs Tombstone Piece these days?

  • @Firellius said:

OTR doesn't work as anti-tunnel since it's circumvented by the killer just tunnelling harder.

And yes, people used to bring DS, DH, BT and UB, but only DS was there for anti-tunnel, with a tangential mention of UB for when killers just left the tunnel victim slugged. Now you need OTR AND DS in order to have -any- anti-tunnel.

I never understood this logic of "You counter OTR by tunneling harder." Not only is that true for old Decisive, it's true for any and all anti-tunneling mechanics in this entire game. The single biggest counter to anti-tunneling perks and strategies is to simply tunnel through them in the same way that countering gen slowdown is to simply do gens through the slowdown. That's not a unique counter to OTR in the slightest.

I don't know how anyone can say with a straight face that OTR is as strong as old DS. OTR is only good against proxy camping killers who are tunneling. A hard tunneling killer can completely delete OTR by hitting the unhooked survivor immediately. With DS you had to leave the survivor slugged for up to a minute or eat it. With OTR you also get deep wound so you can't even use dead hard with it. Old DS>>>>>>>>>>>>

"I don't know how anyone can say with a straight face that OTR is as strong as old DS."

    -Lasts longer

    -Can't be countered by slugging

-Has beneficial effects beyond the endurance

-On-hit boost grants just as much if not more distance than old Decisive

-Single easiest-to-use bodyblocking perk in the entire game

I'm sorry but OTR wins, high diff.

  • What second chance perks were nerfed?

Post-rework Dead Hard is still incredibly strong, Borrowed Time got hard buffed, Decisive Strike got nerfed but Off the Record is just Decisive 2.0, all the exhaustion perks went untouched, Adrenaline went untouched, Unbreakable went untouched—what nerfs?

I don’t even see genrush builds that much aside from the occasional Hyperfocus toolbox gamer. Most people in my matches run Off the Record, an exhaustion perk (usually Dead Hard), Adrenaline, and Windows—aside from Windows I still see the survivor meta heavily leaning on second chances, with the occasional Prove Thyself that doesn’t do much anyways.

  • Survivor meta before the patch: Dead Hard and Borrowed Time

Killer meta before the patch: As much slowdown as you can carry

Survivor meta after the patch: Dead Hard and self-applied Borrowed Time

Killer meta after the patch: As much slowdown as you can carry

  • I'd kill for an exhaustion perk that, when activated, turns a medium vault into a fast vault.

  • My general play is, if someone DCs, go hard in the paint until there are only 2 survivors left. If they've done at least 2 gens, mess around and farm; if not, murder their ass.
