  • I'd assume BHVR looks at their stats, decides there aren't enough killer players in certain MMR brackets/regions that they care the most about, and then decide on buffs in hopes of inspiring more people to play the killer role. 80-90% of the daily rituals I get are also killer related ones, which may be a coincidence, but it seems like that may also be on purpose to convince more people to play killer.

Survivor mains in general are a larger source of revenue than killer mains. But the logic of consumerism falls apart when we consider that they’ve made survivor (their largest clientele) a miserable gaming experience. I guess the hope is that if survivors are distracted with cosmetics—like Sable or whatever her name is—they’ll tolerate grueling experiences; I.e. playing the game as survivor.

I don't find either side miserable, but both are boring and fairly stale in different way. I still assume BHVR has been doing killer buffs because they are trying to entice more killer players based on the stats they have of how many killer players there are compared to survivors. I doubt it will work since a lot of people generally don't want to play killer for various reasons. Maybe BHVR should focus on making a killer bot mode that would be more fun and accessible for survivor mains.

I’d challenge your theory by saying if BHVR is more concerned with player retention and satisfaction on the killer side, why not nerf or eliminate their biggest gripe: SWF? You could argue it would drive survivors away but if they target only 3-4 man SWF teams that’s less than 30% of all survivor players.

I'd bet that the SWF teams spend the most money on the game in terms of cosmetics as well so BHVR wouldn't want to upset their biggest customers.

Thinking about the new perk, it would be an interesting challenge for a SWF to repair all seven gens to 90-99% and pop them all from the basement. Idk if the perk works that way and you would have to keep up with the gen kicks. But an interesting thought.

I did it with some friends, it only took a couple of tries. 90-99ing a bunch of gens was always a good and strong strategy anyway.

My theory is that their data most likely showed that bad killers are more likely to quit if faced with too much challenge, and on the other side most survivors are likely to still play even if they lose a majority of their games as long as it means they get into game quickly.

It sounds like a tinfoil hat moment, but think about it, with the amount of lobby dodging and moaning about swf, the amount of killers that would simply not enjoy the game if they were faced with a real challenge in most of their games has to be pretty high.

BHVR really wants killer to feel like the power role, so slaughtering more than half your lobbies is their way of achieving this, it also doubles as a low-cost way to maintain the game since it doesn't require any meaningful resources being put into balance.

Of course this is on BHVR and not the killer playerbase.

My guess would be there are not enough killer players in general for BHVR based on their stats, which also explains why it's conveinent for killers to lobby dodge since they can get into other lobbies very quickly.

  • I have always used lightborn because the flashlight blind strobe effect triggers my migraines. I used to have to use shadowborn for motion sickness as well. I don't know why there isn't an option to make the blind effect a static screen for the length of the blind or something, there's no reason to have a very bright strobe fill the entire screen except to be obnoxious.

  • I kept all my survivors at p0 and get dodged by P70-100s survivors a lot while playing solo queue probably because they think I'm new. I play about 30-40% survivor but never felt the need to have all perks on them and simply play the survivor that has the perks I want.

  • The game has been consistently in the top 25-50 games on Steam, which is not bad for a very niche and janky game that is over 7 years old. At this point I assume the majority of people who would be interested in the game has already played it. Also the ones who left probably wouldn't be brought back by minor balance changes, it'd take a huge overhaul in terms of gameplay, graphics, UI, etc.

Yea, and like Clown is loosely based on John Wayne Gacy. He was an American serial killer who was also a clown.

Also Ghostface, the Scream character, was partly inspired by the Gainesville Ripper Danny Rolling. There are also similarities to the real case and the DBD character's lore too, with the GF mori being very similar to the real life killings, which could be a coincidence but I doubt it.

If the majority of your playerbase struggles to perform at an average level, there's a teaching problem with the game. There's no spectator cam, match replay system, or tutorial system that covers situations or anything beyond the most basic mechanics. And those are all things other games have.

Most survivor macro stuff is stuff you either figure out on your own or learn in scrims. None of it is found in-game. And it's not nearly as intuitive as killer for a new player.

Depends on the background of the player, coming from Monster Hunter and Dark Souls I found survivor a lot more intuitive than killer and easier to get started with the third person camera and movement abilities. Also there seems to be a lot more casual gaming players who gravitate toward and prefer survivor over killer from what I've seen on reddit, twitter, and twitch.

  • I am curious what they will irrevocably break with the Blight add-ons rework. Hard to be optimistic about it given the BHVR track record.

I haven't played the Switch version in over a year since it used to be so bad. I need to try it again now that there are new graphics options. I recently got a Steam Deck OLED. Surprisingly, the game gets up to 90 fps and looks incredibly smooth for me while playing killer on it without FSR enabled even. I'm not sure how DBD is so well optimized for it given all the problems on other platforms.

They are actually removing that requirement in the next patch : 0

I remember reading something about that, are they making it possible for family members to break the barricades or start in the basement? Seems like it'll be a mess without some additional changes and balancing.

  • Maybe some former Bubba mains are busy playing that cool new game "Leatherface Required to Start"

  • Can't wait for all the posts about removing Chucky's sliding around cars and other structure while using his power when he goes live, that must be a 'bug" too

  • Jessica Lange, Glenn Close, Toni Collette, Sissy Spacek, Vera Farmiga, or Kathy Bates would be cool and funny additions like Nic was if we're talking lots of range and having been involved in horror.

  • Mandy mentioned in another thread that Chucky's model has a smaller capsule size compared to other killers and is similar to survivors, so he can hug walls closer than any other killer and use survivor check points.

Is the console playerbase represented on Nightlight? I thought it was all data taken from PC players' endgame screens.

A console player can get screenshots and then upload them but I'd imagine it requires a few more steps than on PC. I think it is safe to assume the vast majority of Nightlight users are PC but it would be cool to know the official percentage.

So what? Nurse also had and still has a lower kill-rate. It didn't mean she wasn't extremely powerful and didn't need any changes. Flawed argument.

On nightlight Nurse's current killrate is 56.45% while Blight is 51.89%. I don't think BHVR has released any stats on kill rates recently so these are the only stats available and Nurse has a higher kill rate.

  • What worked for me was constantly playing the game with the sound off and while playing music I like or having a video play in the background instead. The less I focused intensely on the game the more relaxed I felt and thus I did a lot better. Also I agree with the other posts about using anonymous mode and closing end game chat. I think it is mostly an issue of becoming desensitized to the more stressful elements of the game and just vibing which will take time, it helps when you find the killer you like best in terms of their power and learning all the ins and outs of that while not focusing on wins and losses but getting better at utilizing their abilities. Hope you stick with playing killer and that your games are more fun in the future!

    1) Blight had his large angle turn speed nerfed 3 times.

    2) Blight had his secondary collision object sliding nerfed.

    3) Blight used to be able to object slide on almost every tile in the game, because tiles used to mostly be vertical smooth walls at 90 degree angles. But now with the new maps and map reworks, we have a bunch of irregularly shaped loops, anti-Blight objects thrown in regular loops, and so much line of sight breakers that we have a much larger percentage of tiles that can't guarantee a hit with Blight's M2.

    4) Blight STILL, after multiple years, can't bounce off of objects that stick out below his waist, which means we STILL have a bunch of objects in the game with broken collision.

    5) Blight still doesn't overperform according to the stats. For the vast majority of the players, Blight has an average killrate. We even got stats for the top 5% MMR, which showed Blight at exactly average kill rate.

It's almost like Blight's performance is fine, and streamers are making clickbait content to get clicks. Blight didn't even do do the fancy hovering in the video, and still would have gotten the hit if he had just dropped straight forward, to the right of the hook instead of to the left of the hook. The bigger question is why did the survivor decide to continue to loop in the giant open room, instead of turning left at the end of the stairs, into the smaller rooms that are way harder to navigate? Are we saying Blight should get nerfed because some survivors make giant mistakes they shouldn't have made?

Point #5 gets ignored too often in all these posts. Even right now on nightlight.gg site for stats reported in the past 28 days for over 24,000 games, Blight is ranked #20 out of all killers in terms of kill rate while Wraith is #7, and this is with Blight being #3 in the pickrate ranking on that site.

  • Matchmaking probably prioritizes region over MMR

  • Does a turret knock the xeno out of power if they are hook blocking and make unhooking possible?

  • @[Deleted User] said:

Hiding prestige favours survivors. Show who is in a SWF and crucially lock the lobby. No last second switches anymore and no lobby dodging from killers either.

I have no issue playing a harder match as killer- I just want to know about it.

I like how TCM shows the player level, character level, what platform they're on, and who is in premade group together in every lobby for all 7 players. Taking away info and features is annoying.

  • In addition to already having to use shadowborn every match to combat motion sickness, I have to use lightborn every match I play as killer since the flashlight blind animation is a migraine trigger for me. I don't know why there needs to be a very bright flashing/pulsating strobe effect that takes up the whole screen in a game that is often dark. It could easily be replaced with a full black or grey screen or even a static image for the same duration of time so flashlights wouldn't be nerfed. A toggle option in the menu to decide between the strobe effect or a black screen would be much appreciated.

In terms of other photosensitivity issues, there are also very fast flashing lights in some Haddonfield houses that don't serve much purpose except to annoy both survivors and killers. I'm not sure if this is worse because I play with 120 fps but that setting will soon be regularly available since it's on the PTB.

    Genuine question.

I don't need it and neither do I like it visually, playing with that big red heart at the center of my screen would take me out of immersion. I assume most people don't use it either.

Hens, otzdarva, JRM, and Ayrun all use it, and I'm sure they influence a lot of their watchers as well

I use the feature exclusively for sadako, don't get me wrong I know its BS, but not taking such an advantage given for free would be dumb.

I noticed a large majority of survivor mains on twitch use the feature even though it obviously offers no benefit to those with normal hearing

  • I assume there aren't that many new killer players generally compared to survivors which also leads to the mismatches.

  • Also boons only have an auditory notification when they are first lit, so survivors could be using shadowstep and a hearing impaired killer wouldn't even know there is a boon up until seeing the boon despite having to deal with even less visual tracking info. Also when the killer is in the area of the boon there is no visual notification but there is a loud auditory one. There should be at least an icon on the hud that shows that a boon is lit. The change to lightweight last year, which is a general perk available to all survivors, also made the game much harder for the hearing impaired and even more inaccessible. It seems like BHVR doesn't consider the deaf and hard of hearing at all when it comes to the killer role.

  • The bad base FOV combined with bad optimization and controls on console (even on PS5/Series X compared to PC) makes the whole killer experience painful. This is especially true on the Switch when the game drops under 30 fps constantly and how hard it is to seen anything if you play in handheld mode.

I think Twitchell has more parallels to the lore than Hansen. The comic nerd angle is particularly specific. Hansen's most notable non-serisl killer traits were being a baker and having an Elder Fudd-style speech impediment.

The most likely inspiration is the standard trope of the crazy millionaire hunter who wants to hunt people popularized by the 1924 short story The Most Dangerous Game. Predator is also inspired by that trope but with extra alien window dressing.

  • The "problem" with Blight is he actually controls well and is responsive so you can turn on a dime with keyboard and mouse, compared to a lot of the other killers who are clunky to control and have low mobility on top of that.

  • I'm like this with Blight, when I don't play DBD for a while the first few games are rusty but then it's so effortless and fun after that. I play him 95% of the time and switching to other killers feels too clunky/slow in comparison. They don't have that same rewarding flow as Blight.

I've always wanted to try Spirit more, but I have some hearing problems so it's kind of a no go.

  • I mentioned this in another thread relating to this topic:

There should be a visual notification when a boon is lit, because it's only an audio cue currently and of course shadowstep takes away scratchmarks which are extra essential when you can't hear any sounds.

I bet there will be no visual assistance for killers and no changes to FOV for motion sickness concerns. BHVR only seems to care about accessibility for survivor gameplay.

  • There should be a visual notification when a boon is lit, because it's only an audio cue currently and of course shadowstep takes away scratchmarks which are extra essential when you can't hear any sounds.

  • I have played Monster Hunter World and Dark Souls 1-3 more overall but DBD will catch up since those other games don't have new content and I play them much less now. Those games are better overall and more consistently fun than DBD, but DBD has more randomness that keeps me coming back.

    GG, OP!

The rights would be through Universal and I don't think BHVR has had any previous dealings with them. They also have other cool horror properties like the original Universal monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein, The Bride, The Mummy, Wolf Man, Creature, The Invisible Man), Psycho, and JAWS.

Let's be real. PTSD is a very serious thing. The kind of event that trigger a PTSD are way to dark to even being to describe.

Someone getting PTSD from something as innocuous as a game is absolute nonsense.

I didn't say getting PTSD from it, I was saying it can theoretically be a trigger. Unfortunately as you likely know innocuous things like certain smells if they relate to the original traumatic event can trigger people.

DBD isn't really a game you should play if you want to chill.

What I think people mean when they say they want to be able to play a chill game of DBD is that they want to 2-3k without having to put much effort in.

Also, you don't have PTSD after playing DBD. PTSD is an actual debilitating thing and not something people get because they take a video game too seriously.

I can see how DBD and online gaming in general could act as a strong trigger for some people who have been severely bullied in the past and bullying and harassment are generally considered events that can cause PTSD episodes.

"Franklin's Demise" is a reference to the original film. Franklin is a character in the original film, and later on in the film he goes out on to a cornfield with a flashlight and and gets chainsawed in the body, causing him to drop his flashlight. That's why it's named what it is in case you wanted to know.

I've always thought it was one of the best and most cleverly named perks and images because it referenced the movie so well. Franklin was such an annoying but memorable character, and that scene has always been one of my favorite deaths in horror movie history.

  • I'm curious what region you play in? After playing in several different regions I've noticed some general differences between how nice or chill people seem to be in game and end game chat. Overall I think the toxicity of the community is an over exaggeration. There are a lot of cool and decent people who play the game and certain DBD streamers are particularly very wholesome and inclusive for a PVP game.

Many people feel this way about killer, and it’s not a skill issue. There are many more things you have control and track as killer. As survivor, even as solo q, you only have to worry about yourself if you so chose. You can still win. You can relax and sit on a gen, and you may never even see the killer.

Lots of killer get performance anxiety when loading in. Atleast until they accept that it doesn’t really matter. Just relax and have some fun. It’s what we play for.

Also Killer being in first person makes everything feel more personal, frustrating, and generally annoying IMO. It's easier to separate yourself from the frustration and not care as survivor since it's third person so there's more psychological distance and more visual awareness of the game environment as a whole. The extremely low killer FOV without shadowborn makes the game extra claustrophobic and disorienting which I presume is unfortunately how most people play killer and also adds to the stress. The low in game brightness and intense flashing animations for blinds and light flickering in maps probably give people headaches/physical discomfort more in first person view as well. I know it does for me.

So you mean to tell me that Artist, Sadako, and Dredge- all of which are very polarising killers and two of whom (Sadako and Dredge) a large portion of the community have called weak- Sadako more than Dredge- are all actually perfectly balanced killers, and were released in a perfect state?

Despite Sadako's ongoing VFX issues with those with photosensitivity, Dredge being literally impossible for myself and other players to deal with without causing immense headaches (to the point where I had to get prescription-level pain killers by my desk just in case I faced a Dredge, when I haven't needed them in over a deacade prior to that), and Artist being called "boring" and "dull" by Survivor and Killer players alike, they're perfect? Despite Dredge being an Anniversary chapter with a very slim playerbase, Sadako only really having one playstyle that puts everyone involved to sleep, and Artist having approximately one and a half good add-ons, they're all perfect?

    Sure.

What would I do? Read here.

I have similar bad headache problems including a migraine with an aura from photosensitivity with the flashlight blind animation (not sure why there isn't an option to make the screen black instead of having a bright pulsating strobe effect when blinded) and have to use lightborn to prevent the animation from occurring. I also need shadowborn for motion sickness, so two of my perk slots are for accessibility reasons.
