No Excuse for Lights Out
There is no excuse for the killer experience to be this bad in the Lights Out Mode.
It's genuinely completely thoughtless design.
Gens started with progress in the initial variant of the mode because they would be incredibly hard to find without the sound cue, but now the lanterns (which all survivors start with) reveal them. The lanterns have auras showing, and if you complete a gen with a lantern it hides all the gen auras from the killer.
Insane amount of borrowed time, massive anti-camp radius that progresses even when the killer is not camping, increased gen speed by an insane margin?
I really wish I could understand what y'all were thinking, but it genuinely just feels like not one person on the dev team actually plays killer or even understands what makes playing killer fun.
Killers get: base kit Franklin's and undetectable, except we still have a red stain, so not quite. We don't even get ACTUAL undetectable. We have zero tracking on survivors unless they're holding a lantern. But let's go back to Franklin's - what's the point of this? Survivor's cannot bring items. Why would you go to a chest to get an item when you 'need' an item, that the game automatically gives you, to see gen auras?
On top of that, they have basekit windows.
It's just like the anniversary event all over again. Survivors have like 10 toys to play with, and killers get one. At least in the anniversary event the poison was good, even if it wasn't fun. I'm not sure there's anything to say other than the devs hate killer players or just fundamentally don't understand the game.

Since this was my first Lights Out event, I can't compare it to the previous one; personally, I have more fun playing as the Killer in Lights Out than as a Survivor. I really like the darkness, as I’m sensitive to light, and the atmosphere appeals to me a lot, too. As a Survivor, I had the bad luck of facing a "gamma-maxed" Killer in every other match, someone who wiped us all out in three minutes. Playing as Ghostface, the Lights Out mode helped me master the Steam achievement for downing 50 marked Survivors, and I unlocked three more achievements when I switched to playing as the Hag. There are always things that aren't implemented quite right or could use some improvement or changes. Someone like me, who had bad luck and didn't have much fun playing as a Survivor in Lights Out, found this mode perfect for playing as a Killer. Of course, I’d recommend the reverse, too: if playing as a Killer is frustrating you, give it a try as a Survivor :)
It is not really that hard to understand: The mode was extremely unpopular to play as Survivor, mainly because the gimmick of the mode (no information, limited visibility) only applied for the Survivors, but not the Killer, since Killer players were just using Killers who can bypass this (e.g. Legion or Doctor, as easy examples).
Furthermode due to the Darkness, camping and tunneling were really easy. This all resulted in Lights Out not coming back for almost 2 years, despite the other modifiers (Chaos Shuffle, 2v8) coming back on a regular basis.
So the Devs decided to do more for Survivors in Lights Out. In the end, those modifiers are in a constant Beta phase, so the Devs are testing out what works and what does not work. In the next iteration (if there is one), we will see more changes done or maybe things removed.
But in the end, it is just a fun gamemode which should not be taken too seriously. Which Killer players also said in its first iterations…
I'm mostly commenting purely about how the design makes no sense, and is not fun for killer IMO. I'm not necessarily trying to win, I'm playing Trapper and other random killers to try and spook people and have fun. It's really difficult to do that when the gens go at a breakneck speed. Frankly, after playing both killer and survivor in the mode, it's harder to see on Killer than Survivor haha.
But in general, this event coming right after the anniversary which was ALSO not fun to play as killer… idk, it just feels really weird.
The killer experience isn't bad, you're just over reacting. Queue times contradict what you're saying lol
Nah, it's pretty bad unless you play some certain killers with powers that ignore the darkness or are OP granting instadowns. Then the game flips on its head and becomes unfair.
The main complaint I have as killer is the gen speeds. It's always the gen speeds. And there's just zero tracking, so 9/10 times, even if you JUST hit a survivor, they can run past the blackness of your limited vision, break line of sight, and then you've got nothing.
A lot of games I've had, both as survivor or killer, consisted mainly of "sneak up to survivor, get a free hit" followed by "lose track of survivor, go patrol another gen"
Thats because it's mainly a hit and run mode, the gens are a huge give away as are lanterns, if someone uses a lantern that's your tracking you can see it through walls coz of the SSR (screen space reflections).
the mode snowballs quick for killer and for survivor, I see it's only "Bad" for people trying to play normal DBD in the mode. Nobody is interested in the horror experience of the jumpscares while playing casually etc, coz they are numb to dbd as they play it WAYYYY too often, it's not catered to them, more people need to realise this.
People have been enjoying this iteration, I don't think every mode should be catered to the core DBD players who hate changes. My friends and I had a blast, and I really enjoyed playing killer too last week.
It's actually atrocious to play as killer in this mode for lots of reason. Unless survivors do goofy stuff. majority of games will end with 2 or 3 hooks tops. Lack of gen defense or info perks for killer hurts a lot.
while i think they went too far with what they gave syrvs, if anything i would rather they have kept woo and lantersns and gen speed and all but without making it impossible to hear injured sounds to even try and have a facade of a chase (i dont play the killers survs have been complaining about) and showing the gen aura to survs if you already have the sound to help you.
im not really bothered by a free 5 percent but if you have free gen aura for the entire game the 5 percent was kind of unnescecary.
i didnt care for the mode because i didnt feel like a killer or a hunter because i felt even more incapacitated than the survs did.
survs have way better visibility than the killers do and i refuse to use reshades or manipulating the lighting to be different than intended and my moniter has vivid blacks so the dark is reeeeally dark so the second a surv moves past that veil of black they are almost always just gone because i have absolutely no way to be able to figure out where they went unless they had a lantern.
I would have felt better about feeling so limited if i felt it was even. but it wasnt so i only played it for a day and went to regular.
DS was pretty good once i realized to m1 first and then spear and it was very useful in keeping survs close enough to actually chase
that's dramatic, I've seen games where it's been the other way too. I just think a lot of people aren't as good at killer as they think they are. lol
More like some people are too lucky and keep getting potato or super chill opponents.
I totally agree. For me Lights Out was really fun as a Killer and helped me a lot with my achievements
My friends and I have had a similliar experience, I honestly think the people who don't enjoy the mode are those who it's not aimed towards, and I think that's fine.
I missed the play window for lights out by a few hours a few days ago and tried the 2v8 mode which just wasn't my thing.
I saw some people play a little bit of the lights out mode and something I really liked was the reduced information being handed to the killer, it creates a state where game sense can be more of a factor in decision making rather than reacting to information...which I really like.
I was going to run some kind of sneaky insideous Dracula build where I'm mostly in wolf form and I'm just appearing from around corners etc for scares rather than stamping on the survivors.
Oh and the dredge seemed cool in the darker environment, especially during nightfall. I've rarely played dredge but I was looking forward to a few matches on lights out. Probably won't touch dredge that much in the meantime but excited if this game mode comes out again whether or not it's unfair.
Also xeno spooky build would have been fun, they often surprise me when they just appear.
