Punishing your players
Solo survivor here.
You've had the DC penalty in for years which has always been ridiculous to me. If my teammates quit for whatever reason, I could stay in and see what happened or I could DC too. We'd all move on to the next game.
There's no reason to punish a person for DCing when there are bots now. The bots are better than half of my teammates in solo queue.
I just had a game where a teammate was AFK for several minutes, and I was punished with a de-rank for not trying hard enough. I didn't DC, but I was stuck in a game at a huge disadvantage though no fault of my own and you punished me for it.
THAT'S PATHETIC. DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO PLAY YOUR GAME OR NOT? DO BETTER.

Reminded me of the time i got de ranked because a hillbilly tunneled me off hook and for the entire game, apparently i didnt do enough in the game
The DC penalty harms the game more than anything. It shouldn't exist.
Rank doesn't effect anything related to mmr for lose who were wondering
The penalties should be harsher.
This sentiment always confuses me because the game balance doesn't support it, but also because the penalties are already incredibly bizarre and harsh as it is. What makes you want them to be even worse?
Or you could leave for any petty reason if there would not be DC penalty and you most likely would. The DC penalty is not for the people who "play the game" its for the people "who decide that they don't want to play the game" in the middle of the match.
DC penalty was one of the best things they ever added to the game and because of that matches have been way better.
Otherway around, dbd doesn't support backfills. People already leave because of any random reason like going down first, getting hit by a hit they didn't know is possible, standing up on the wrong leg and so on - those people would be muuuuuch more present if it didn't exist and even more people would do it.
We would just end up with matches that were never finished because any of the sides end it for some random reason before.
new copypasta just dropped

The only people against a DC penalty system are the type of people who'd make the game miserable without it by proving why we need it. History has long proven why its needed, in this game and many others.
There's already enough rage quitting with the system in place as it is. If anything the first "free dc" shouldnt exist and you should take a time out from the first one as it allows too many games to be ruined by a single individual quitter without consequence.
sounds like a parent trying to educate their kids
Because DbD has a "go next" epidemic, or whatever name you want to give it. It feels like every time even a minor inconvenience occurs someone leaves or gives up. Obviously if you're playing a multiplayer game that you readied-up for this type of behavior should be punished.
That being said, I also think Behavior needs to improve their D/C detection system, because getting penalized for their servers crashing or a hacker holding you hostage and forcing you to leave is ridiculous.
Those are issues with the game itself. I don't think the quality of matches has improved since the system has tightened up—there's just less bots.
It's a band-aid. Hook suicides were not a common thing prior to the "perk shakeup" years ago, which shifted the game dramatically toward Killer. There is a failure to mention that players give up most often when the odds are stacked against them or when they're fatigued. Doubling down on punishments in that case only makes the problem worse.
People in dbd are always complaining at any point of time, that's one thing I learned and I'm probably not much better (to be fair, I never leave games so in that case I won't back down :D). Also do you really think that this would make the game any better? Do you really think playing the game halfway to 2 gens down and then having the killer leaving would make it better? Or the sable goes down first, "oh well we are only 3 people now - uhhh 2, oh well I'm alone now...". Taking away the penality won't help it in any way, there's a reason why most games have one for that if they don't let a new person join after a dc.
I just don't see what could be desirable about having people leave matches random that ether ends the match or just deletes your chance of winning completely.
Also to the lower part even tho it wasn't for me:
People always have to assume that they won't have the best chances possible. Both sides can stack perks that just destroy you together, if they also use a good killer or map and are playing good you will just lose. Giving up because of something like that just feels like a child being mad not able to win.
And if you're so fatiqued that you don't even want to play the game anymore... just don't, you're just bothering yourself and others with that. Just take a break, play something else, maybe get a coffe - but that, that just doesn't help anyone.
The game isn't stable enough to not have support for leaving the trial early, as Abandons have proven. It does way too much to waste your time. So to counter your point, the game still allows you to lay on the ground doing nothing for 5 minutes. The game still allows you to be hard tunneled out without less than 10k BP. The game still allows the right builds and the right Killer powers to combo together so that you make no progress. And those are just a few issues on one side of the spectrum (which you also touched upon).
The issue with not addressing player fatigue is that that attitude of "if you don't like it, then go home" never leads anywhere good. It's not like DBD is a small friend group or a club—it's a massive IP that is always trying to bring in new players. If they're introduced to a meat grinder and told to suck it up, they will leave and we keep seeing that be an issue.
DCs wouldn't improve the game by any measure, really. They wouldn't solve core issues or fix bugs. It's more that they offset bad scenarios and spare players' time and energy. They also have the side effect of keeping some of the worst playstyles in check by punishing those players with a lack of engagement. On top of that, unlike the current system that locks players out of the queue until they've served their time and doesn't back down on that time until they've played 20 consecutive trials (which is a significant amount), it also keeps the matchmaking moving. Currently the game tells players: you can deal with it or leave. And if you are dealing with it but you have a bad day? Get out. And if you've cooled off and come back 3 months from now? Sorry, you're still in jail.
To me, that is much more unhealthy and downright unusual for the game than just throwing in bots that we already have. I have never seen any other game be this strict, let alone one that isn't ranked or evenly balanced.
Look people can annoy each other on both sides, killers can stall for ages in theorie and survivors can legit complete all gens in it feels like 2 minutes. Those are specific combos that allow you to do this, but they are not the usual case. While I agree that slugging is a waste of time I don't think being hardtunneled helps your example because you're are out of the game as fast as possible then - only having 10k bloodpoints is not much that's true, but honestly whatever? You get so much bloodpoints over the time that that's not even a factor to balance around for me. if you ask me you could give them 40k instantly, bloodpoints don't matter for the gameplay anyways as long as you have perks and addons.
Keeping some of the worst playstyles in check... yeah and legit everything else like we've seen before. We had times without penality, people just left because they got downed first, found first, couldn't complete the gen in your face, keep you around the hook and demanding a free unhook, letting themself getting downed at the top of ironworks of missery with boil over and then complaining that I slug them and I could probably still talk half an hour about the absolutely pathetic reasons people leave matches in this game. As sorry as I am, people in this game are simply not as reasonable as you seem to think, they would never use it only in appropiate cases but 90% something that's ether their fault, doesn't make sense at all or because they can't stand losing.
I can agree of maybe reducing the games needed to reset the penality time or making it so the timer starts directly, but I simply don't want to accept people that leave because of reasons like this without at least wasting their time as much as they do for others (I think you also kinda forgot that a match that ends halfway because of a random dc also wastes the time of the others).
