I don't think Unreal Engine 5 was a good idea

Dead by Daylight is starting to give me the same vibes Crysis did when it first released.

It feels like this game is ahead of it's time in the worst way possible.

  • If you play the game on modest hardware or the generation of consoles it released for, you get ~25, 30 FPS
  • If you play the game on current gen consoles you get ~50, 60 FPS

There's nothing wrong with 60 FPS on the surface, but considering that last gen consoles were promised to run at 60 FPS eventually, that's actually pretty bad.

It seems the only way to enjoy DBD is to invest in a powerful PC 5 years ago. ๐Ÿค”

What even was the point of upgrading to UE5? Better graphics? Graphics you can't enjoy because the game is slobbering on your CPU?

What are we going to do for the 10th anniversary if the game doesn't run at a reasonable frame rate? Sit & watch while this enormous milestone waddles past at 12 FPS?

Comments

  • Wait, current gen consoles can't get above 60 FPS? I've played on PS4 before so I know the performance for last gen consoles was subpar, but I kind of just assumed that things worked fine for the newer consoles.

If that's the case, things really are dire. DbD's graphics are nowhere near impressive enough to warrant such bad performance.

  • honestly the game barely even looks better ๐Ÿ˜ญ the lighting and character models still look dated, meanwhile UE5 somehow brought performance problems and random physics glitches

Anyone who says that new dbd looks better is actively in denial.

Old dbd looked gorgeous in many cases, was atmospheric and actually eerie.

New DbD maps look lifeless. The only thing that improved were the textures, everything else has gone downhill

I agree that the perfomance doesn't match the current fidelity of models, but lighting/materials etc we are slowly getting there step by step

I don't agree, I have clips of me playing og DBD and while I prefer the old animations in some cases, the game has gotten better looking over time. You just need to compare swamp to the new things and also Cheryl to newer survivors, its like night and day.

I'm pretty sure this is them just scratching the surface too with their visual upgrades, if everything were to look t he quality of Trickster's delusion. We'd be in for a treat.

Survivors have gotten better look wise, but Swamp looks the same as the Asylum maps, and that realm had a graphical rework.

New Autohaven looks awful, the Fallen Refuge looks awful, new Haddonfield looks like a lame COD map more than a DBD map.

Fallen Refuge isn't really fair to compare, its barely a map to begin with. Haddonfield isn't in the game anymore so don't need to worry about that.

Autohaven I agree with, it needs fixed.

  • The issue is they just tried to move the game into U5 or decided it would be better to use it from hence forth. The issue that lies, which is something they do not want to do, is they should have just made a dbd 2.

I don't think will ever get a dbd 2 but the games been built on spaghetti code and they've just been throwing band aids at the new problems or old ones. A dbd 2 would be better for many reasons, granted yes every game will have it's problems, we could get voice chat (NOT PROXY CHAT), we could get match replays to see others from their perspective or if that 1 induvial was cheating, the game could run better, we could get a photo mode, more moris, and so much more. The only issue is I don't think they ever would because they'd lose out on their licenses that I don't see many people playing a lot of as is. I mainly see Weskers, Neme, Myers, Kaneki, and the occasional Freddy other than that I usually see originals.

I give this game and the devs a lot of crap, I want this game to be better but I can't want that alone

  • Man, doing these pre-anniversary/ Rift challenges has been rough.

What is causing DBD to run so poorly, are things behind the player not being culled out properly? Is it a memory leak problem?

It can't just be UE5=bad, right?

What hasn't been optimized, & why hasn't it been fixed already?

I understand the code must be very difficult to manage, but the game has been performing terribly for more than a year now, how has this not even been addressed let alone dealt with?

it's 5 people walking around in a box floating in the void & somehow it's the most technically demanding game I have on Steam.

  • I just played a match on Thomson House & the game ran smooth as butter, so if we could get a separate queue for 24/7 Thomson House that'd be great ๐Ÿ‘

  • I'm on Linux, so maybe my experience isn't valid, but yesterday I was playing and noticed that every single time I was downed, my PC's fans would just max out to the point I could feel the vibrations on my desk. When I was hooked or picked up by a teammate, it would go back to normal.

There DEFINITELY seems to be some strange bugs causing unnecessary resource usage. The game generally runs fine at 120fps for me on a 3080 at 1440p, but I still get stutters here and there (could be shader compilation), and that issue I just mentioned seems new. It didn't happen before the update.

I had the same thing happen to me one time, I just assumed it was my PC.

I got knocked down by a Houndmaster & my fans went vvvvvrrrRRRRRRRRRMMMMMM

That was during the Walking Dead paragraph, & I haven't had it happen since.

Scared my jammies off me. ๐Ÿ˜จ๐Ÿ’ป

    off topic but

    "scared my jammies off me"

i dont know why but i laughed way too hard at this

  • IMO nothing really changed between UE4 and UE5 when it comes to DBD. Updating the engine doesn't mean the graphics change if you don't create new meshs and textures to take advantage of new features. What we got was how lighting was handled. Other than that I would be hard press to find anything visually different.

Now the bugs moving to a new engine, those are very noticeable.
