Point system for perks
Hello,
I think we can all agree to say that some perks are better than other. Some are must have while you would never want to touch some others.
The thing is, some perks are fun, or are alright, but not always worth wasting a perk slot. I know my suggestion would be a really heavy change, but i think we should be able to equip an unlimited amount of perks.
Instead of having the choice for only 4 perks, we would have a budget of 100 points. The better perks would cost 25 points, so if you want to only use the good perks, you still have your 4 perks loadout, like before.
But the lesser perks could have a lower price, with the value of each one individually set, so you would have much more freedom and possibility to create original and fun loadout. Maybe it would be weird to come in a match with 10 perks equipped, and i'm sure that we will never have that, but i really think it would be an amazing change, and bring life to the 90% of those perks that we never use because of how trash they are.

It is a cool idea on paper, but the problem is that it would be a design and balance nightmare.
Imagine one perk that by itself is not that strong, so they assign it "10 points". Now, people discover a build where that perk with 5 another weak perks makes a super strong combo. How do they fix it? They make that weak perk cost more points, making it not worth using it by itself? They nerf one of the other perks, making them also not worth their cost and probably breaking other fair builds? They reduce the total points you can use to make a build so you can't have 6 weak perks, affecting every other build?…
But I agree, there are multiple perks in both sides that need some love to make them more useful.
Yes, i know it would be a lot of work from the dev and constant balance fixes (like other competitive games in fact ?) that's why they probably never do it.
But thinking at all the possibilities and variety it could bring, i'm a bit mad at this waste of potential ahah
And to fix the OP combo, they could edit some perks when needed, like adding special condition when used with other perk, or nerf/buff, or stuff. But it would certainly be doable by editing individuals perks case by case (lot of work i know).
I think lowest usage rate perks could be like 5, 10 15, 20 points worth depends on how low they are, so it's all dynamic.
It would turn into "how come really popular survivor perk is less points than really popular killer perk."
For some reason, I disproportionally enjoy points-based skill allocation in games. Do I think it could work here? I mean, quite probably, but it would certainly require a lot of groundwork to get it to a workable state, definitely more than Behaviour would be willing to commit. It would add more variety to builds and encourage people to try something other than slapping on the four best perks available and calling it a day. It would also add a new twist to buffs and nerfs, with perks deemed too powerful simply moving up in cost rather than being beaten and left in an alley somewhere, as is usually the case.
Actually, perks being too low on point can just get buff.
Everything should TRY to be 25point worth, but sometime it just doesn't happen so it should be fail-safe system that works automatically rather than BHVR manually adjusting everything.
I agree. That would be one of the, actually many, benefits of such a system. Perks could still be buffed or nerfed, but as you said, there'd be that little fail-safe running in the background.
Would be impossible to balance and not only do they need to worry about raw perk changes they have to assign an arbitrary number when perk combos exist.
Choy is the dbd YouTuber with the best takes on the game and he had a video with a remarkably similar idea but still with the 4 perk limit he just suggested giveing people a BP multiplier for leftover points.
Heres the link if you want it
https://youtu.be/NlVmdJutkpsI think it's a cool idea but between stuff like perks that are very weak on their own but very strong with one other perk that is also weak on its own, meta changes, perk changes, new discoveries, interactions with new content and people simply disagreeing with the points the devs put on any given perk it would be a tricky and very high maintenance change.
