New player wondering how to deal with facecamping and tunneling killers ?

I recently got Dead by Daylight so I'm a new player and I can't seem to find a good strategy to deal with a facecamping killer that goes for one kill and then camps him untill he (and anyone who comes for rescue) is dead. Doesn't really matter if I am the one tunneled or its one of my teammates but the game gets really frustrating from that point.

The strategy I adopted is to simply do the gens as fast as possible and hope the guy who is on hook will stay in the game struggling only to buy the rest of us time. Most of them disconnect straight away and honestly I don't blame them -> I've been that guy and its not fun at all.

Sometimes it pays off and I'm able to escape but only to find myself with 8-10k points at the end of the game and sometimes even get -1 rank (even with escape). The thing is, no one makes points when this happens because only the gens alone don't give that much.

The other strategy I've seen people do is go together as a team for a risky save and sometimes that works and the guy gets saved, but at my rank (10-15) it will fail most of the times;

I prefer my strategy because imo a killer who camps his first downed survivor has its mindset all made up. HE WANTS TO CAMP; that's his thing. He will be happy at the end of the game if gets that camped kill and only 15k points, BUT he will be 10x more happy if he gets 4 easy kills because people came running to him and he will think that this strategy ACTUALLY works (it does sadly); So I would very much like to deny him these free kills -> I stay away and do the gens.

Honestly those are the only 2 possible things you can do against a tunneling killer so I guess my real question is: Why is this OK ? In fact it's more than OK; It's actually enforced by the game with basic killer perks they give like insidious or noed; You cannot complain about this because it is actually a viable game mechanic for killers which bring me to the second question: How is anyone enjoying this ? After a game like that I don't feel like playing survivor for the day. It's just time wasting, I don't actually learn ANYTHING from this games.

Instead I go killer and release my frustration on some poor guys in the same way because that just feels like the right to do xD. Why even play survivor ? Killer gives waaay more points and you can tunnel and make people frustrated. SO FUN RIGHT !? It's just toxic behaviour leading to more toxic behaviour and from now on, I'm only going play facecamp killer. Why get mad at them when you can join them :D and that my BOIS is how to deal with facecamping killers. The title was misleading, I only pretended to be a n0ob in order to give you the BEST strategy for countering dead by daylight most used mechanic.

This is it guys, now you have it. Thanks DBD devs for such a great balanced game. Thanks for the good servers with no lag. Thanks for this great forum where killers also get a section where I actually saw some FACECAMPING and TUNNELING guides lmao. Great stuff keep it going

  • The best advice I can give you is to lean on certain perks. Deliverance is one way to deal with a camper at least some of the time if he's not standing literally on top of you, and Decisive Strike and Borrowed Time help to deter tunneling. Once you're on the hook, you're at the mercy of the killer and your teammates. It really sucks that Behaviour doesn't do more to aggressively de-incentivize this kind of behavior.

  • Thanks bro but I told you I joined the other side and let me tell you those perks only tickle one's ability to tunnel and camp.

Let me recommend you perks you should totally try instead:

Agitation , Iron grasp , Mad Grit , Insidious , No one escapes death

They can help you to get your prey to the most awesome spot on the map <-THE BASEMENT-> a place actually created for even easier tunneling. Also comes with extra hooks for those nasty survivors trying to get altruistic and stuff.

sadly you cant deal with it as a new player until you get shards and get lucky to get anti-tunnel or camp perks as survivor or pay for the chapters to level them up. killers dont realice how cancerous that playstyle is and that theyll eventually kill the game if too many do it too often

  • Silly response but I usually start talking ######### about them in the game. The stuff that I day isn't serious but it keeps my mind off the fact of them doing that.

  • They had to release the game on game pass to get more survivors. This game will die off soon from it

  • Use BT to help your mates against it, if you have Laurie unlock DS as fast as you can.

  • Borrowed Time (Bill) is the best anti-camping perk. It will give the person you save an extra hit if you save inside the killer's terror radius (which they have to Mend, but that's not a big deal). However be aware that some killers, like Ghostface or Pig, can counter BT by using their stealth ability. You will have to bait them into coming out of stealth to use BT. But it will give the person you save a chance to run away. More than likely the killer will tunnel them, so you may need to take a hit or something to help them get away.

Decisive Strike (Laurie) is the anti-tunnel perk. For X seconds after being unhooked, if the killer picks you up again you will get a skill check (60s at tier 3). Hit this skill check and the killer will drop you as if you wiggled free/flashlight saved/pallet saved. This will let you start another chase which can waste more of their time. Sometimes they may opt to just let you go because it will be too much of a time sink to chase you.

Deliverance (Adam) is a good anti-camp perk also. You will need to make a safe hook rescue before you can use it (which may be tricky if the killer is camping that survivor) but it will let you jump off the hook during phase 1 guaranteed. However you will be in the Broken state, which means you can't be healed fully until the timer runs out (60s at tier 3).

Boil Over (Kate) can make it harder for the killer to hook you. Your wiggling has a greater effect while they carry you and nearby hook auras are made invisible. If other survivors take hits (ie. body block) while you are being carried it increases the chance you will wiggle free.

Breakdown (Jeff) can forces a killer to carry you to a different hook if they down you after you get saved. When you get saved, the hook will be auto-sabotaged and the killer's aura will be shown to you for 6s. This is not super effective but it can act as a deterrent sometimes, making the killer take a chase on someone else and giving another survivor the chance to heal you up off the ground.

Saboteur (Jake) can work like both of the above perks combined, however it's generally a better idea to take some other perk and instead use a toolbox to sabotage hooks. You want to 99% them, meaning you don't finish the action and stop just before the bar fills completely. Do that to 3 hooks in an area, preferably a corner of the map. Then when the killer chases you, run to this corner and complete the sabo on all the hooks, then run as far into the corner as you can. If done correctly, it will be impossible for the killer to hook you before you wiggle free. Just be aware this strategy is more risky and requires planning ahead. If you are in a group communicate which hooks are sabo'd so that if you are being carried to one of these 99'd hooks your friend can run up and finish the sabo before the killer uses that hook on you. If you attempt this strategy, it is recommended you bring Unbreakable (Bill) so that you can revive yourself as the killer may opt to just leave you on the floor (ie. slug).

You can also use a medkit (preferably white because they are expendable) with a Anti-Haemorrhagic Syringe (ie. pink needle) to save friends that may be getting tunneled by a killer. Basically what you do is follow your friend as the killer chases them, and be careful not to get chased/hit yourself. The moment the killer downs them, run up and use the needle. IDK what your keys are set to, but you start the healing action then press the Activate Ability button to use the needle (I suggest to play a Kill Your Friends game to practice using it so you know what buttons to press). Your friend will be instantly healed to full and this will give them a chance to get away, or make the killer waste more time chasing them. You can also use the Styptic Agent (ie. purple bottle), but this will only heal them to the injured state instantly and is less effective. However, be aware this is a very risky move that requires good timing and fat balls to pull off. Also, it will almost definitely piss off the killer, so there is a good chance you will become their new target. You ideally want to do it without getting hit, but sometimes you need to take a hit to be able to run in and do it. Just be ready to run because if you go down quickly it will be a waste of an item.

The last thing you can use is Flashlights. Any will do, the purple one is the best but not by much. If you bring it into the trial, double batteries or battery + Low Amp Filament (in that order, do not put the filament first) will give you the most use. If you are having trouble landing the blind use bulb add-ons (white, yellow, or green, not pink because it uses the flashlight faster). You may want to go into a Kill Your Friends game and practice using the flashlight to blind. You want to time it so that you start the blind right when the killer first lifts the survivor onto their shoulder (they do this followed by a little "adjustment"). If done correctly, you will blind the killer and they will drop your friend. This is one of the best anti-tunnel tactics but it is very high skill. I recommend using all the stuff I mention above first.

And of course you can combine these tactics together however you wish. If you are in a group, it will be a good idea to have each person do something different (though you may all want to share certain perks like BT or DS) just so that way you have multiple options available during the game in case you need them.

Good luck, and yea it sucks but at the end of the day camping/tunnel are not very effective strategies for killers. As you get better at the game it generally becomes easier to counter these tactics, however they are still problems at high ranks. It's just there killers do it more tactically and purposefully, so you will be require to do all this stuff near perfectly for it to succeed.

Also just keep in mind that you will die as survivor. A lot. Even the best survivors die often, if only less often than less experienced survivors. Things happen you just gotta let it go and move on to the next game. Don't let it bother you, it's just part of the game.

  • Survivors no longer gen rush on camping and stupidly try to go for the rescue. What's worse is the number of people who will dc or suicide instead of trying to help their team. Camping is now a way more effective strategy then it's ever been because of this.

  • I think as someone with a lot of experience who’s played for awhile, it’s easy to forget what it was like in the beginning. I started playing as soon as it came out on Xbox, so I ranked up before it was such a recurring problem. Dbd really needs to incentivize ranking up so higher skilled players don’t bully new ones, as that is a huge problem. Regarding the camping and tunneling tho, you seem to be on the right track. If someone’s being camped, honestly, rush tf outta the gens. At a high enough skill level everyone can escape before the first dude dies. You gotta figure that most campers do it because it has worked for them in the past. Break that cycle. Force them to change. Tunneling is a bit less annoying in my opinion, but relies more on the survivor playing. People unhooking can run bt, or you can run ds. I’ve also played games before where my teammates and I have forced the killer to hook us in rotations, giving us more time. If you want an unpopular opinion: play with swf. I play killer, it can suck, but it at least encourages play and makes strategizing/coordinating much easier. If you just wanna mess around and don’t wanna try for any of that, play the numbers game, not every killer camps and tunnels, tho bad experiences stick out in our minds more than good. If you’re new and need help, watch streams or ask experienced players. I know I’m always willing to try and assist so we can all have some fun.

  • It's been my experience that only good teammates can counter the face camper. Most aren't willing to take hits or trade or run borrowed time and just farm you off the hook, if they help at all. I think the only cure is to rank up so you play against better killers who don't do that.

  • If you're being facecamped: tell your teammates to stay away and do gens, and prolong your time on the hook as much as possible. Martyr yourself by wasting as much time as possible for the killer.

If a teammate is being facecamped, let them do the same and just do gens.

As a killer main, I see campers as pathetic. It's really sad how insecure a player has to be in order to actually camp, much less facecamp. It'd fine and makes sense to hang around the same third of the map if the totems and gens are there too, but it's just evidence of a lack of experience to actually sit near and prioritize the hook - either that, or they're just genuinely trying to be a prick, and those kinds of people really outta just be removed from the game.

I disagree. If you know a team is going to be stupidly altruistic, it is perfectly acceptable to be next to the hook.

  • @Pulsar Other survivors not really making it feasible to leave makes sticking close not camping. Camping as a form of bait, waiting for the survivors to come for you: it's lazy, cowardly, and insecure. Acknowledging that the survivors are swarming the hook is another thing entirely.

If it works, it works. If there are 4 survivors left, the game is NOT in your favor. The faster you kill someone, the better your odds are of winning. Unless you're playing Nurse or maybe Spirit.

  • @boom0159

Once you get to higher ranks you get outta those killers mostly. Just do your best to pip up. Once you hit the rank 15ish mark you'll notice a drop in those strategies. They fade even further at rank 10 and higher. You'll always run into these kinda people at every rank though, but it's a tactic for new killers regardless because of a lack of exp.

  • "If it works, it works" finishes games, but costs both emblems and BP. Juggling is provably superior to tunnels or camps, and just like lil people trying to feel big by having to go "gg ez" while running 4 meta perks and bigbrain addons, it's just evidence of insecurity and inexperience that leads people to use these pitiable strats.

People must be allowed to learn that camping isn't viable. If I see scratch marks around the basement, but I don't see a survivor, I am sticking around. I'm gonna hit the injured one, slug him and go after his farming friend.

  • @Pulsar Like I said, if the survivors themselves are keeping you near the hook you're not doing anything wrong. Following scratch marks and noise is just good gameplay, it's when you stay near the hook without those prompts that it's a. camping and b. more likely to hurt your game in the long run.

  • Below ranks 9-10 camper and tunneling is 3k-4k for sure. That's why they camper. Lot of killers play only to kill, I don't know how they are in real life :(

Then they have to be allowed to figure out that it's going to make them lose.
