Why is (almost) every new killer just chase ability + teleport

I actually haven't played actively in around 2-3 years, just every now and then, because I just haven't found anything exciting about recent updates.

It seems like half the new killers are the same formula: m2 for a chase dash/projectile, space/lctrl for a teleport to whatever they used as a portal for the said killer. The other half is still chase power or mobility, but IG like with Kaneki, sometimes innovative.

But I'm really disappointed with what they did with FNAF. I was just as disappointed with Sadako, because I really hoped they would go a very different route, with a power that's really unique and brings new mechanics (like with Myers in a sort of sense, a simple power but one that has the most fun variety of addons that makes it in turn so interesting and fun to verse and play as). But an axe throw? Is that really that innovative? It just screams "we had to add some chase power so we went with a projectile throw, for the 637th time".

I am not sure I would mention such scenario as an example of strength / weakness of a killer because comp is completely irrelevant when it comes to balancing.

It is external, not experienced by the majority of players and filled with restrictions that a regular game doesn't have. It is made for entertainment, not something that players are seeing on their own games daily. It is useless for these kinds of discussions.

Against the average team, Ghostface can hold his own. Every killer can. Any us can think about our own games throughout the years: I guarantee all of us here have seen every killer get a 4k at some point.

While yes comp is a very niche scenario my point is, you can be the best ghostface in the world, a good looper can still destroy you. Like you can expose them and down them 1 time, if they are good players it wont work twice.

And yes every killer can 4k that does not mean bhvr should make killers the likes of trapper and gf who are a joke against any decent player. As much as people dont like it dbds community is hella competitive and making the game competitive has manage to keep it alive, all the casual competitors have crumbled because well they refuse to accept the once casual game for friends got competitive.

Easy example many people have mentioned: skull merchant, she was a thematic killer with a different type of gameplay, so according to so many people in this thread she would be marvelous for the game.

I do not think I have to explain how tools of torment is one if not the worst chapter ever released, and I have played since like a week after the game released.

She was uninteractive, boring to face, had a boring counterplay and the pace of the match was horrible with her. Same as knight, time and time again the community has voiced how these killers are good for like 20 people who play them but they absolutelly ruin the experience for everyone.

So these alternative killers are known to fail, and stealth killers are a joke if you have more than 300 hours, so why would bhvr choose to sabotage their biggest chapter by making the killer these type of archetype?

But that applies to every single killer in the game, except Nurse. You can be a good player and still lose, it is natural, no one will win every single match they play.

However, that doesn't mean they will lose every single time, either. I wouldn't go as far as to call it a competitive community, more of a "play a casual horror game but don't like to lose". I think that is a better fit. Because it is true, some people out there try optimizing their playstyles because they don't like to lose, it happens. But they do, because DBD is much more than individual skill, there are always more factors at play.

Yes, Skull Merchant as she was on her release was not good for game, no one will deny that. But she is not the only unique killer we've had. Original Freddy was perfect, and he would have stayed that way had BHVR not nerfed him after a week, a decision even Cote himself said on an interview that they shouldn't have done. But he is proof that an alternative killer can work, it just has to be done properly. Knight, the other one you've mentioned, may be disliked, but he doesn't cause any real issues for the game. He is simply not for everyone.

Having an unique killer is far better than another repeat of a generic anti-loop or, the worst possible case, yet another dash killer, when we have enough of those already. The only reason Springtrap has a recycled power is because it takes less time and game knowledge to get the hang of, which fits a chapter that is meant to attract a lot of new players to the game.

Put the best ghostface in the world against a comp team, even the most chopped one and the ghostface will be destroyed if they are not playing on Lerys. Certain killers depend on your opponent being bad at the game, thats just how they are designed.

There are Comp Ghostfaces that win rounds against comp teams. They exist. Go look up "DBD Comp Ghostface". He is certainly not washed in Comp because Comp uses a special ruleset for him.

Besides, the comp argument is moot - Comp scrims are a different game from normal DBD entirely. Nobody in regular joe blow level DBD plays comp like this. Not a soul. Most people, 99% of everyone playing, are just playing the game normally - not with callouts, not with the strongest stuff, and not super damn coordinated.

Most every Killer requires Survivors to make a mistake if they are not named Blight or Nurse. That argument has to cease too, literally every Killer does better if they force or learn to use Survivor misplays - and even good Survivors can and do misplay. Being good at DBD does not mean you're a perfect God that never fails; players that never screw up ever don't exist. Because of this, capitalizing on Survivor mistakes is a basic skill that Killers in general, IN GENERAL, any Killer player should know how to use, because capitalizing on opponent mistakes is the literal game, trying to make the other side mess up is part of the game. Master this, and you can do well on pretty much any Killer. It's a basic Killer skill, so the argument "but X Killer has to rely on mistakes!" doesn't hold water, either.

When are we all finally going to admit that no, none of us are actually going against comp players in a comp setting 24/7/365, and at some point understand it isn't the Killer's kit sucking - it's US sucking at the Killer's kit?

You speak a lot of wisdom, my fine Nightmare-Maining Friend. :) I wish more people would stop using these "but Good Survivors" and "But comp DBD" arguments. They quite simply do not, never have and never will apply to the average round of DBD. The same goes for tierlists. Nobody actually needs a tierlist to know how "good" a Killer is because all Killers are fine and can hold their own in an average lobby. They're designed for that in mind, so the average person wins some and loses some.

It is long past time to put away the myth that some Killers are "just bad" because they got powercrept. There is no such thing as a truly Bad or Weak Killer, except maybe Skull Merchant. Nobody likes Skull Merchant.

We aren't allowed to have nice things anymore. Just dashes and projectiles. BHVR is basically telling people that if you don't like those particular play styles, you should just quit.

Tbf, Skull Merchant is currently in a state which we can call a "soft killswitch", i.e. nerfed to the ground while they rework her again. If I remember correctly, the devs themselves said that they left the Skull Merchant in that state while they work in a proper rework.

I'm begging to bhvr for them to include a spider in their game who should have unique and fun abilities that's related to webs, tripmine snares and eggs as traps. There needs to be something new on the table for once.

Watch the said spider killer have the power:

M2 - shoot web to pull survivors in

Lctrl - telport to location traversing the spider realm

We after all don't have Deathslinger with teleport, so let's get that too.

Condemned is really strong, if used correctly.

Sorry, but I'm starting to get tired of explaining this in every single post that gets created about her.

it is strong on paper and against mid survivors at best, good survivors will just hold the tape and you will basically never be able to win with this strat.

Well you will basically not be able to win with her nonetheless against good survs with good tape management

we do need to remember that this will be the first killer many new players will be playing, therefore it needs to be accessible. And springtraps power despite being slightly derived from multiple places, is a solid one with multiple aspects that will allow these survivors to learn the basics. And for veterans, he'll have so many unique builds just by the virtue of his massive addon variety, and the variety already in his basekit. It's gonna be a good chapter, all I'm worried about is the queues.

We don't have to imagine, we can see it.

Most teams are not bringing full meta loadouts, and most Survivors are not even SWFing in 4-stacks. The data from BHVR proves this; 4 man meta squads are vanishingly rare.

I don't think that is the case, tbh.

Because the scenario this Ghostface in particular is going against won't be seen by the vast majority of players in DBD, and those are the scenarios people will actually play. And, as we know, Ghostface players out there are not losing every single one of their games.

Comp DBD is external, made for entertainment, and is completely irrelevant when it comes to balancing the game.

    My matches say otherwise.
And before you say: "you just play against bad survivors":

    • A majority of them have above 4k hours
    • Some of them have comp on their profile
    • Many are swf
    • Strong loadouts
    • How often do I need to win to get better survivors then? At some point, the games mmr system should stick me with the people you describe right? Or maybe, shes just pretty good the way I play her.

i also often get 4Ks because it's pubs, matchmaking is practically nonecistent. My experience changed only when i actually load into scrims where i actually play against people of my skill level.

What i actually noticed is that average survivors in pubs struggle a lot against macro heavy killers, that's why you see e.g. Sadako, one of the worst killers in dbd having some of the highest killrates.

Even my experience as an Oni main, many survivors in pubs tend to literally do things like taking hits AGAINST ONI, trying to greed pallets, not stealthing through this power etc. At least i hope their MMR changes prove to be something actually good.

I don't know, I'd MUCH rather have unique killers that can satisfy different playstyles than have Demogorgon added for the 6th time but with a different franchise and skin covering it.

And fun is subjective. It heavily depends on what you're looking for in the game. Are you looking for just cat and mouse competitive worlds championship? Then sure, the infinite demogorgon killers they've added will satisfy this. Are you looking for diverse gameplay? Then other killers will satisfy that.

If I'm playing for a healing build, then of course I'll hate versing a Plague. Does it suddenly mean she is bad design because instead of teleporting she can keep people broken?

Springtrap is right now just xenomorph, demogorgon, dredge, unknown, huntress, all combined again. It's just insult to injury that they went specifically with an axe to be thrown, like could it be LESS unique?

Killer players nowadays seem to be unable to have fun unless they get a fast and easy 4k at 5 gens so every killer needs to both teleport around the map to prevent them from crying about gen rushing (they still cry about it though) and be extremely good at chase so they can hit over pallets or loops.

If killers learned a ghost face getting a 4k at 1 gen left doesn't mean they lost the game unlike 2000 wins in a row Blight winning every match at 5 gens left we would have more killers with diverse playstyle.

Back then BHVR hinted towards a "psychological horror" route for Sadako, which made me very intrigued, as she doesn't chase any victims or even appear too much in her movie. But then we got what felt for me like a quite basic killer. Not that I didn't like her, it just felt like a wasted opportunity.

While I will first have to say THREE such killers in 2 years (on top of the existing ones) is A LOT, let's analyse the killers and see how unique they were

    • Singularity - chase and teleport, but a unique take
    • Xenomorph - Demogorgon with a different counter mechanic, chase power is literally a copy of Nemesis/PH
    • Chucky - Pig but small
    • Unknown - another projectile damage killer, with a teleport, so he falls in the chase+teleport category, but not completely a copy of another killer
    • Vecna - weird one because technically chase + semi teleport, but a very unique kit overall so no complaints here at all
    • Dracula - PH/Nemesis/Xenomorph (wow, they're getting many) + Demogorgon/Chucky + a more unique ability
    • Houndmaster - budget Deathslinger
    • Kaneki - unique
    • Springtrap - Huntress/Xeno/The other 10 killers with either a projectile or short ranged hit ability + Demogorgon/Dredge/Xenomorph/Sadako/Any other teleport

6/9 killer either copy of others or not unique

You forgot vecna speed Boost /spirit /weskers / hoyndmaster. For Dracula.

sadako is quite scary when her tv's are near gens i was in a game where she had 7 condemed on 3 people at 4 gens on the game but she lost because it was the game

  • Because that's the gameplay loop. They no longer can give a killer a chainsaw or a knife and call it a day. Killer needs mobility for macro and chase power to combat loops.
