Future direction of balacing DbD

As we can see, camping will be getting nerfed (removed grabs, future free deliverence to prevent camping, etc.) and at some point tunneling will be nerfed again I think. Because camping will be worse, tunneling will be even better option, so after that we will nerf tunneling at some point.

When we will reach a point where tunneling isn't that good anymore and camping is even worse, I think winrate to all Killers will start dropping by quite a lot. Killers who are not at least A tier will suffer even more of this.

The thing that Survivors want is they want to have a fair Killer and fair match, which is understandable. No camping and idealy no tunneling in most matches. However, killers who are not strong (no, mid is still not strong either) will simply lose way more games because you just can't expect killers to hook every survivor once or hook 3 people twice and then maybe get a kill or something since Generators can fly easily. You simply can't. This isn't some "skill issue" if the Survivors you are going againts are decent and not terrible. Even A tier killers sometimes struggle with this.

So then after we reach this point where Survivors can finaly have more peacefull games, then we will have to buff all killers again to keep up.

The only way you can make healthy DbD for both sides is if you make Killers go for hooks, not that much for kills (tunnel, camp, etc.) but also make Killers able to keep up with gens. Maybe in 2-3 years we will get there.

  • You're assuming that killers won't just naturally get better the more they play. Survivors don't start off as expert players, they go through many losses and learn to play better as a result. The same is true of killers. Strats like tunnelling are effective enough that, as a dev even once said, can carry you to an MMR level that is above your comfort zone. So of course you get tougher opponents. SBMM is about finding a place where your strategy works roughly half the time (per a dev, again) so bad killers will not simply lose forever if they don't camp or tunnel. Their MMR should settle, then increase as their gameplay improves, rinse and repeat.

And these measures they're putting in place don't stop these strategies, they just make them riskier and less desirable options.

I keep stats of my games and I see a tunnelling killer in 1 out of every 12 games average, and a camping killer even less than that. I have around a 25% escape rate. So to me, anti-camping and anti-tunnelling measures would have very little impact on my games because I simply don't see this stuff much anyway. So in my experience, most players seem to do just fine without those strats.

  • You are acting like killers will not get buffs lol.

Last mid-chapter nerfed med-kits, self-heal and the best survivor perk (DH).

Now this mid-chapter nerfed Prove and BNP.

Probably they will nerf toolboxes as well in future mid-chapters.

And killers will get buffs as well if they underperform.

That's how games are works. Devs saw camping is really problematic and decided to fix this. If they see killrates drops to down, they will look killer issues as well, like how they did in past.

  • I really don't think we'll get "there", meaning the magic balanced point. If we have learned anything over the course of these years is that the developers make some...let's call it interesting for the time being, choices when it comes to "balancing" the game. Even if some things get fixed, I don't see that maps would ever truly be balanced or that SBMM gets a rework where important factors like killer/swf/items/addons/perks are taken into consideration.

I don't see the game ever not just be a one-sided curbstomp with the occasional balanced matches happening by sheer accident.

My point is, camping and tunneling will be nerfed in future and then Killers will be buffed I think. It's like a prediction, a quess.

You can still tunnel, proxy-camp, slug, 3-gen and skip hook states. The devs are not removing these entirely. They are just trying to make them more gated. Someone who does not know to count to 10 after an unhook obviously got nerfed when BT became basekit. But Killers who were facing survivors who brought BT (and since BT was meta, it means tunneling has been happening for a long time) already knew the timing. Good killers didn't lose anything from their strategy, perhaps the nerf was freeing 3-4 BT perkslots for survivors finally, so they can bring a different perk.

Most killers don't face-camp, unless it's endgame but they do proxy-camp if they care at all about winning. And that can actually be a lot stronger since you have 2 survivors at the same place. Forcing survivors to trade hooks, also saves you time from finding a new one and chasing them all over again.

But good ol' tunneling and face-camping were so intuitive that even a baby killer knew to do them without the game telling them so. So with the new changes, you actually get punished for being inexperienced, which should not be a bad thing.

High level killers still have those tools in their arsenal.

  • "So then after we reach this point where Survivors can finaly have more peacefull games, then we will have to buff all killers again to keep up."

Basically this. And this is fine.

BHVR tried the other way (buffing Killers or nerfing Survivors), but it did not reduce camping and tunneling, it probably even buffed it.

  • I doubt there will be sufficient Killer players waiting around for devs to buff most if not all the weaker Killers to catch up, 10 minute Survivor queues would have made a comeback by that time.
