It is now official. We had to wait for verification processes to be confirmed, it's not as straight forward as might initially appear.

Finally this has become a reality, believe me we're all happy about this and that we're finally have DbD on Steam Deck.

Rejoice! Long over do, but nonetheless I am very happy about this and I’m excited to play on the go, on my couch, bed, or bathroom! (Maybe even at work 😉 )

    How do I get the eac_server.dll file ? and EasyAntiCheat_x86. dll ?

    please help answer. Thank You.

Make sure Easy Anti Cheat is installed to your Steam library, and you have the Proton Experimental compatibility tool selected

  • Yeah, it’s the same source. Not enough for me to fully believe just yet lol. Hopes are high!

Has there been any public statement from BHVR about this yet besides direct emails? I don't want to get invested in it just for it to be another thanksgiving day accident just to get blocked from the game again >_>

I'm not believing anything until I see it with my own eyes.

  • @Mandy can you confirm it’s for good?? If so I’m so happy

understandable. i played a TON this weekend. XD i'm at work but if anyone can chime in, let us know if it's still working today.

    Still playing right now :)

but let us all understand, if this stops working again, BHVR is intentionally turning it off

You can actually unlock 120 FPS by modifying some settings, but you'll have to go to Desktop mode on the Steam Deck to do that. I'm not sure if the Deck is capable of handling 120 FPS, but anything above the 60 FPS cap helps for hitting skill checks.

Thank you for the info, but I can’t bring myself to go all in just yet, otherwise I’ll be extra disappointed if/when they disable it again.

  • 60FPS at medium settings, haven’t dropped below 57 FPS and no lag spikes or anything. Super smooth.

  • image.jpg

It’ll probably abruptly stop again, but this is a nice change. I’m happy to be playing this on my Deck and not at my PC. Much more enjoyable.

Probably because MYM devs are not the same as DBDs.

Even if they are owned by the same company, completely different teams can be assigned to different game projects.

As we all know, historically DBDs devs were always out of touch with the community, making game changing updates only by following their own "stats" and "graphs".

Maybe MYM devs also take community's feedback, wishes and criticisms in consideration and are overall more experienced.

That’s what I said, it’s a DBD management issue not a BHVR issue in and of themselves as a company.

DBD team needs to get their stuff together and start getting their cash cow fed again before it dies off.

Fix the Steam Deck compatibility, this is exhausting and unreasonable at how aloof they are to a clear call from the community to do one simple thing.

  • @Mandy

Is this something we can consider a possibility perhaps around the time of the anniversary? It seems like a Dead by Daylight management issue rather than a BHVR issue as Meet Your Maker is fully verified, even was promoted as being Verified on the Steam Deck (seen here https://twitter.com/meetyourmaker/status/1643025592030482432). Just looking for some clarification on what is going on behind those tall doors?

  • @ShulkerBox8 said:

It is very strange that they are choosing to actively ignore a 20+ page thread. Makes me think something more sketchy is going on behind the scenes. The reality is that Linux/Steam Deck supports EAC through proton, and only requires developers to flip a toggle on their end. The lack of BHVR doing something as trivial as breathing air is not due to "laziness". It would give thousands of players the ability to play the game they paid for. All we can do is speculate since the community is being left in the dark about something that nobody would expect to take this long. Something that doesn't make sense looked at from any angle. They absolutely can enable it but won't. It just doesn't add up.

There’s speculation they signed some contract with Epic, which wouldn’t surprise me. BHVR is lucky Starbreeze chose them to develop their game, and now they act snobby and entitled.

  • Dev update, no mention of steam deck

  • @hailxsatanxeveryxday said:

    I keep getting "ERROR_DETAILS_PakValidationFailed_MESSAGE".

Tried updating, verifying, and copying the PAK files from Steam to Epic. Did they kill Linux support altogether, or did I do something wrong?

Going to try reinstalling everything later today, but I don't have time to download 60GB right now.

If this update killed it, I'm probably done with DBD. I don't have enough space on my hard drive to perpetually keep a Windows partition on it just for one or two games.

    Validate game files via heroic

  • DBD will be dead by the time it’s implemented as a last attempt to save the game rather than using it to bolster player numbers.

  • A whole market has opened that doesn't even require BHVR to port the game to this new console, but yet it still doesn't make it (yet).

Surprising given it's on literally everything else.

  • @zavch said:

The game still worked for me on epic games heroic launcher just last night. If you already watched that YouTube guide make sure you force an update and make sure heroic is updated to the latest version. Sometimes it takes multiple launches Proton GE 43 gave me slightly less lag than 47 but any works really

Maybe I’m just dumb, but my experience is always inconsistent. Sometimes it boots and other times it doesn’t, so I’m not sure what the issue is for me, but imo it’s just not worth it.

6.5.2 does not work. dbd client prepared to play, but client rejected by server side

Thank you for checking it out. I'm honestly not even mad anymore as much as I am just genuinely sad about the fact that I can't enjoy it on my Steam Deck. I've been spending less time on my PC, so the Deck has become my lifeline when it comes to game as of lately.

I do truly hope BHVR will step it up and enable it to work. Video Horror Society (VHS) works on the Steam Deck amazingly. Their devs told me last night many people in their office have Steam Decks, so they want to keep the VHS experience available to Steam Deck owners. It's nice to see other studios making it a priority. I just hope BHVR will make DBD available to us on the Steam Deck, too.

bhvr add eac.so and we can play via heroic. I think we have dc from host, because bhvr recognized steam+proton as console (steam deck) and bhvr no announce deck support.

I, along with many, don’t want to use the jank heroic work around. I’ve played on it numerous times and it’s inconsistent whether it will boot or not, it lags, and in the end of the day it’s simply bs that we need to work around a multi million dollar enterprise due to laziness. BHVR should just add deck support native, and stop being all “secretive” about it. Tell us ######### is going on. Hogwarts legacy comes out in a few days (verified Steam Deck support) so I’m all set. Screw BHVR and their tactics, I’m over it.

  • @Alphonse said:

i give up... i delete steam OS and install windows, and that's it..

Good choice. I think they’ve given up on Linux support.

  • I read through the post about their plans, apart from the roadmap, and I am beyond disappointed they didn’t address Linux at all. Guess we’re all chopped liver guys n gals

  • @Pyc said:

bhvr publish roadmap to next year and nothing about steam deck

They won’t address steam deck directly more than likely, it’ll be masked as Linux support when and if they do.

  • @Alphonse said:

Mid chapter out and still doesn't work..

Go figure, was wondering if anyone would test it as I’ve now removed DBD from my deck. Thank you for testing this patch!

  • @Pyc said:

how to update game via heroic?

Go to heroic, then dbd, then the three dots or lines (can’t remember), then there should bud a drop-down and one of the options should say force game update if available and you press that

  • @Mrfirepotato said:

Still in awe how, as a company you allow your team to announce support for something, let a year pass and have them repond with generic responses and feel that is acceptable...

I lost hope to be honest

Same here. Hope was restored when it worked for all of 3-5 days or whatever. I’ve since lost hope.. again. The way they (don’t) interact with the community is just disgusting. Spent over a thousand dollars on this game with chapters and cosmetics, and not to mention the nearly 3k hours I’ve put into it too. It’s sad that this means nothing to them. According to steam charts DBD playerbase is steadily declining, finally.

I had a dream where I played DBD on the steam deck from my couch on the big screen while crunching lays tato chips and I was also a super joystick 360 juicer too. BHVR help make my dream come true!!!!

They won't because paying customers mean nothing to them.

  • @Alphonse said:

AMD rx580 Mesa Latest version (22.3.3) Vulkan-Radeon (22-3-31) It could also be a problem with Nvidia, other people with lag spikes could confirm, this would also explain Why it works perfectly on my PC and steam deck, both are AMD

My nvidia graphics card on my PC performs without issue. Maybe someone will come up with a solution for the lag spikes for heroic.

  • @Pyc said:

guys someone have performance issues? i talk about heroic (egs). pls check: spamming LCtrl + LShift (crounch + run) as flashlight clickers. do u have freezes at this moment?

Lag spikes happen with DBD on Heroic, it's a common issue that unfortunately won't be resolved until the Steam Deck is supported by BHVR themselves.

  • @hailxsatanxeveryxday said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3316111#Comment_3316111

What are you even talking about?

    1. I'm not having any lag problems. What's your distro? Have you even tried this yourself?
    2. Apparently you don't follow DBD much outside of social media, because the Facebook and Twitter posts saying that "cross-progression has been re-enabled" aren't referring to EGS at all. EGS cross-progression is a relatively new feature; multiple people here have confirmed that it worked even before cross-progression was re-enabled on Stadia, which is what those posts are about.
    3. If we're being technical, Stadia cross-progression always worked, for that matter; it was account linking that was disabled for some time. I linked my accounts before there were any problems, and my progress has been syncing between the two flawlessly the entire time. Yes, cross-progression works flawlessly and always has. And you can currently link Steam, EGS, and Stadia, if you want, so I don't know what you're on about.
    4. Wait, come to think of it, is the game unplayably laggy on Linux, or is it so bug-free that there's no way bugs are the reason it hasn't been released yet? These statements seem to contradict each other. You understand that any performance issues affecting the EGS version of the game are going to be exactly the same for the Steam version being that they're both using Proton and are more or less identical, right?

What I wanted is to be able to play DBD on Linux without having to dual-boot another operating system.

I'm appreciative that there's now a way to accomplish this. It plays well, and they've confirmed that they're working on "native Steam support".

Being that they have confirmed that they're working on it, and we have clear evidence that that's exactly what they're doing, what is it that you're trying to accomplish? It seems like you think you're on some kind of a holy quest to bring the evils of BHVR's dev team to light. Do you even like this game?

I'll go ahead and stay in this thread to help people who actually do want to make this work.

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3316577#Comment_3316577

Yes, it gives you a list of files you need to copy over from the Steam version to the Epic version. Same locations in both instances. When you copy that one, it will complain that it's missing another one next time you boot. There are 20 or 30 of them, I think. It's tedious, but once you've copied them all, the game works again.

You reiterated exactly what I said about EGS cross progression being enabled, so I’m not going to dive into it further. I'm not trying to do anything other than advocate for Native Steam Deck Support. They've promised this for at least almost a year now and have yet to deliver.

  • @CrypticGirl said:

Well, I can't get it working. I get the error "EAC has detected that game files have been modified (error code 1)."

I've tried forcing the update and verifying and repairing, but neither worked. :(

    Heroic or Steam?

  • @hailxsatanxeveryxday said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3316083#Comment_3316083

I didn't see this before I wrote the above comment (which you should also read), but I'm not "making excuses".

They gave us what we wanted. It works. You can play it.

I was complaining about it as much as anyone, but now it works just fine, and all of my progress will be synced with Steam when they decide that's good and ready. I'd like to be making progress on my achievements, but the situation is currently just fine other than that.

I don't think "pressure from the community" is going to do much good, at least not here. They know we want it. They're getting it done. You have a solution in the meantime. Be happy.

They did not give us what we want. We want Steam Native Support, not a crummy work around that lags.

Apparently you don't follow DBD much because cross progression has been re-enabled. If we were just "content" with everything BHVR gave us, DBD would have flopped years ago. It's people like us that push the issues are what get BHVR to stand up and fix their wrongs.

This post thread is clearly not for you if you'll take what you can get and suck it up and move on. We want NATIVE Steam Deck Support that is actually supported. BHVR didn't "give us" the Heroic work around, people worked tirelessly to discover it. Don't give them credit for something they didn't do.

  • @hailxsatanxeveryxday said:

I think the reason why there's a block on the Steam version is pretty obvious:

They don't want the forums (and Steam reviews) to be flooded with angry Steam Deck users who don't know anything at all about Linux and are upset because X feature doesn't work properly or map Y has a graphics bug or they just plain couldn't get the game to run. They haven't finished testing it thoroughly, and maybe the people at corporate are also waiting to get Valve's Verified seal of approval before moving forward.

At the same time, the devs aren't dicks, and so, in the meantime, we still get a way to play, and BHVR can take the stance in the meantime that it isn't something that's officially supported while gleaning valuable information from the few who are trying it.

As mainstream as the Steam Deck has become, merely enabling Proton support out-of-the-box is still going to lead to hundreds to thousands of people trying it and causing headaches for BHVR.

It takes an extra $10, a little bit of knowledge, and a lot of extra work to get it working on Linux, more work than just installing Windows on an SD card would be for the average Steam Deck user.

In the meantime, if you really want to play the game on Linux, get the Epic version. It's the price of two cups of coffee, and cross-progression works flawlessly. If playing the game is more important to you than what OS you're playing it on, dual-boot Windows or play on GeForce Now.

It did work. Flawlessly. I don’t think making excuses for them is going to help us get Steam Deck support. They need the pressure from the community to get things done

It could perfectly be server-side. When you connect to a server, you announce yourself along many metadata, one of them is probably the client you use. Someone at behaviour probably added a check to prevent people from joining because they feel it isn't ready yet. Just wait patiently for an anouncement.

Being it’s an error when connecting to the server I have reason to believe it is server sided. You can get into customs but after a while it times you out, so I just think they need to flip a switch on their end especially being it did work before.

You guys are all right, but why does the epic version works and the Steam one doesn't? Cannot be just a server side block otherwise it wouldn't work for Epic too. I may be wrong since I'm far from being an expert tho

The answer could be some differences between these two, maybe it's just a library mismatch or a difference in how the executable from Steam works compared to that of Epic.

I don't know if this have any relevance or is it just an expected result since I don't have the knowledge to analyze a dll/so compiled library but I found this, maybe someone could investigate even more:

(I used the same command for every file you see here)

    user@pc:~$ strings '.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/Dead by Daylight/DeadByDaylight.exe' | grep Easy

    This give the following results:

    - DeadByDaylight.exe

    Unloading the EasyAntiCheat library.
Outdated EasyAntiCheat library, does not match with launcher's version.
    EasyAntiCheat Oy1
    EasyAntiCheat Oy0

    - DeadByDaylight-Win64-Shipping.exe :

    ../../../EasyAntiCheat/eac_server64.dll
    ../../../EasyAntiCheat/easyanticheat_x64.dll

    - EasyAntiCheat_x64.dll :

    Easy Anti-Cheat successfully loaded in-game
    User-Agent: EasyAntiCheat-Client/1.0
    EasyAntiCheat\Cache\
    EasyAntiCheat successfully initialized
Error validating EasyAntiCheat code signing certificate.
    EasyAntiCheatPreRelease
    EasyAntiCheat_x64.pdb
    EasyAntiCheat_x64.dll
    EasyAntiCheat Oy1
    EasyAntiCheat Oy0

    - easyanticheat_x64.so :

    EasyAntiCheat\Cache\
    User-Agent: EasyAntiCheat-Client/1.0
    EasyAntiCheat successfully initialized
    Easy Anti-Cheat/1.0.0
    EasyAntiCheat Client

If someone with the Epic version could try the same to see if there are any differences would be cool.

I think there’s a chance that Heroic is able to trick the game into thinking you’re on a true PC, whereas Steam knows you’re on a Steam Deck. Of course nothing certain and I very well could be grasping at straws, but in my mind it’s what makes sense..

  • @Pyc said:

guys, we have no eac error! we disconnect from dbd server in lobby, error 500

  • I’ve been messaging and reaching out to anyone and everyone. BHVR won’t even give us the time of day to respond, and honestly it’s extremely frustrating being they’re so big on having an accessible game on any platform, they continue to neglect support for the Steam Deck.

  • @Moshquito said:

To those who play on Deck with Heroic: what settings do you use? It runs almost flawless on my Deck, only the other survs and the killer are a bit stuttery, even i have constant 60 FPS. Are there any options in heroic to solve this? Seems like other players dont have this issue.

Until BHVR adds Steam Deck support, we’re stuck with this. Heroic is imperfect when it comes to DBD and stuttering is normal for DBD on heroic.

  • BHVR still won't pop in here and say "Yo, this is what happened". Stadia sunset is THIS month, and BHVR has said nothing regarding the Steam Deck.

  • Still not working as of todays bugfix.

  • We had it.. and then we didn't have it. I don't know why someone from BHVR can't just pop in and say "This is what happened" - like get off your high horses and just TALK TO US!
