60FPS at medium settings, haven’t dropped below 57 FPS and no lag spikes or anything. Super smooth.
You can actually unlock 120 FPS by modifying some settings, but you'll have to go to Desktop mode on the Steam Deck to do that. I'm not sure if the Deck is capable of handling 120 FPS, but anything above the 60 FPS cap helps for hitting skill checks.

I'm just looking at the "Install for" options in the ProtonUp-QT - Wine/Proton Installer, and it lists a Steam, Wine, Proton, Wine Flatpak, and Proton Flatpak.
In the DBD settings in Heroic, it asks for a Wine version, and a WinePrefix folder. I've tried different Proton versions for the Wine version, but I haven't touched the WinePrefix folder path. I don't know if that's where the issue is or not.
Just to be sure nothing is going weird with your setup, I would recommend deleting the folder in your DeadByDaylight folder in your Prefixes directory and then in Heroic Wine Manager uninstall all installed versions, then install the newest version of PROTON-GE which is currently Proton-GE-Proton7-55 as I'm writing this. Make sure Dead By Daylight is using that version of Proton, and make sure you run Force Game Update If Available and also Verify And Repair before launching the game. It should install Easy Anti Cheat and then launch the game and you should be able to get into the main menu. From there try playing a bot game to see that everything works correctly.

So when you say delete "this" prefix folder, is there a certain one? I'm in Games => Heroic => Prefixes => Dead by Daylight. In there, there are three folders: pfx, drive_c, and then dosdevices. Do I delete the pfx then?
Just delete the entire DeadByDaylight folder inside Prefixes. It'll make a new prefix the next time you launch the game. The prefixes are essentially just the fake windows drive that Wine uses for compatibility with Windows programs

Ah. Now I see the folder, but the game still isn't working for me. The EAC splash window will appear, and then it will give me a black screen. After a few minutes, the game stops and I'm back in the Heroic Games Launcher. No error messages at all, so I have no clue what I'm doing wrong here...
That's odd. Maybe try deleting this prefix folder. It should be in Heroic => Games => Prefixes => DeadByDaylight. And then afterwards try "Force Update" and/or "Verify and Repair" from the game's settings menu in Heroic.
-
It's a bit confusing but the root directory of the game is called DeadByDaylight but there's also a DeadByDaylight folder in the root directory. I think it has to do with the way EasyAntiCheat and Unreal Engine work as to why it's setup like that, but anyway, here's a more thorough explaination...
For example, your folder structure probably looks like this to get to the EGS folder:
Heroic => Games => DeadByDaylight => DeadByDaylight => Binaries => EGS
If it's on Steam it would be:
Steam => steamapps => common => DeadByDaylight => DeadByDaylight => Binaries => Win64

Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the guide? It works well for me, but there are always edge cases. Share your experience to help improve the guide please!

I ended up buying it on Epic in addition to owning it on Steam and I regret it. Opening epic is so much more of a hassle than just playing the games that are on the steam deck home screen so I never do it. I wish they would just enable the anticheat for steam already.
If you weren't aware, there's a Linux native alternative to Epic Games Launcher called Heroic Games Launcher. You can also use Lutris from what I've heard, but I find Heroic the easiest. I wrote a guide on setting it up if you're interesting in giving that a try.

I literally registered to comment on this thread. I used to play dbd on my ps4, but moved back to pc gaming after owning a steam deck. I have literally bought the game again and steam and now can't play.
I refuse to play on either console or any other machine till it's available on the steam deck.
You technically can play on the Steamdeck, just not through Steam unfortunately. You can play through the Epic Games Store version of DBD and you can link your Epic account to your Steam account so you don't lose progress. It's annoying but it is a functioning work-around. If you want to do that, I wrote a guide on how to do it here: https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/361429/unofficial-linux-support-thread

steam version worked 1-2 days out-of-box (in december). bhvr drop steam client on server side (500 error in lobby, but all others functions work)
Ohh I didn't know it had previously worked on Steam. In that case, it definitely has to do with their EOS settings. They just need to enable a Steam client in the EOS Dashboard and upload that client to Steam as a newly released version. I wonder if they delayed because of the rampant cheating and DDoS attacks that have been happening... I've heard the DDoS specifically had to do with the way Steam servers work and how each person in a lobby has their public IP exposed and therefore can be DDoSed through Steam.
-
I've investigated the issue a bit and from what I can tell it has to do with Unreal Engine's Steam Sockets implementation. Since DBD uses Unreal Engine 4.27, Steam Sockets don't work the same way as they do in other games using Unreal Engine 5 or later.
It might also be Steam Authentication that's the problem. Basically what happens is as soon as you start a game, you immediately lose your connection to the game server for whatever reason. Could be a bad implementation of Steam Sockets or wrong setup to connect to Steam Authentication, or some other Steam related problem.
Of course, Steam is not really to blame here, it's Unreal Engine's poor Steam compatibility, especially before version 5 of Unreal Engine. I'm not sure if it's even possible to run DBD's multiplayer using Unreal Engine's Steam plugins because I'm not really familiar with Unreal Engine development. Maybe someone who's more familiar can shed more light on how it works under the hood?

Wouldn't that work and be maintenance free?
ln -s $EAC_DIR $BIN_DIR ln -s $EAC_DIR $EGS_DIR
instead of copying over and over the EasyAntiCheat folder when it needs to be. Just make a link to the source folder.
//EDIT: also ticking the EasyAntiCheat Runtime box in Heroic game settings is basically the same as defining the variable manually for the Steam EAC Runtime, it uses Heroic provided one though I think, so both methods have their "pros and cons" I guess.
//EDIT2: yes it works, I think it is better, no need for Steam EAC Runtime, no need to copy over and over the folder on updates.
Oh yeah I forgot about Symbolic Links... lol
Thanks! I'll update the guide
Oh and also you're right that it using Heroic Easy Anticheat Runtime works now. I had tested it in the past and it hasn't worked until recently as far as I know. Maybe I did something wrong in the past.

Can anyone play on heroic launcher? I got an update out of nowhere and now the games keeps saying no network connection, i noticed the game says 6.6.0, that I'm aware of the epic games version doesn't have a PTB and i didn't change any configs so I'm kinda confused.
Edit: I got another update and now it's back to 6.5.2 everything seems to be working again, someone at behavior probably ######### up lol
I wrote a guide on common issues here: https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/361429/unofficial-linux-support-thread
It was probably that you needed to run "Force Update If Available" or "Verify And Repair". It happens sometimes.

Script for quickly copying the EAC folders to the correct places. Create this script in a text editor of your choice and name it whatever you'd like. I call my mine dbdeac.sh. It's easiest to save it in your home directory. Each cp command should be on one line, but the forum formatting won't let me paste it that way. The syntax is (command) (argument) (target) (destination) all on one line with a single space in between each:
#!/bin/bash
cp -rf /home/(yourusername)/Games/Heroic/DeadByDaylight/EasyAntiCheat /home/(yourusername)/Games/Heroic/DeadByDaylight/DeadByDaylight/Binaries
cp -rf /home/(yourusername)/Games/Heroic/DeadByDaylight/EasyAntiCheat /home/(yourusername)/Games/Heroic/DeadByDaylight/DeadByDaylight/Binaries/EGS
After you create the script, you need to make it executable. In your terminal run:
chmod +x (scriptname).sh
To run the script (assuming it's in your home directory), simply type this in the terminal whenever you need to re-copy your EAC folders to the correct places:
./(scriptname).sh
Nice one! Thanks again edgar!
Btw, you can use $USER instead of (yourusername) so it will pull the username from the system's environment variables so that it's truly an automated script and doesn't require any editing. I'll edit it a bit and add it to the guide.

Weird... This thread used to be 32 pages long, now it's 20. Did they change the pagination of the forums or have a bunch of replies in this thread been removed?
I have this thread bookmarked to the last page btw, that's how I knew it was 32 pages previously.

There were some changes to EAC on Steam, but every method I know of to get EAC to work on Steam didn't work. The issue seems to be more to do with the Steam multiplayer socket not working correctly with Unreal Engine which DBD was built with. I'm not sure what the fix for it is, but obviously other games have made it work, so it shouldn't be impossible. I might have something to do with the fact that DBD uses a slightly older version of Unreal Engine.

Yeah I'm not doing that, I just want it to work on Steam OS without any crazy workarounds. No reason it can't as it worked over Thanksgiving. It seems they are preventing it from working as I get disconnected when matches start to load. If they provided a reason I wouldn't care and would move on, but the lack of communication and support is frustrating to say the least.
Yeah, I totally get the frustration. But btw despite that thread being a big wall of text, the changes are quite easy if you already own the EGS version. I've been playing problem free for weeks. It sucks I have to use EGS, but it is what it is. I think they'll patch the Steam version eventually. Actually, it probably requires a change to their EGS settings. I tinkered around with it in the developer console they provide and it looks like you have to submit a build and enabled EAC for that build. I imagine that's what they have to do for the Steam version, but they must not be ready to launch it.

It's working on Heroic Games Launcher through Epic Games Store. If you don't own that version, you'll have to buy it again through EGS. You can link your Steam account so you don't lose progress. Anyone else having issues with EAC since the update on Tuesday? I was playing fine last weekend. I'm getting an EAC cannot be instantiated error. I've tried forcing an update and repair of DbD through Heroic Launcher and re-copied the EAC folders. The log file isn't telling me much, just throwing a generic "EAC NOT INSTANTIATED" error. But it looks like it's finding the PROTON_EAC_RUNTIME variable earlier in the process, it just doesn't like what it's seeing, so I'm kind of stumped. I'm on Pop!_OS 22.04 for what it's worth.
SOLVED:
For anyone else experiencing this issue, there seems to be a weird de-sync that took place for me within the EAC folders. Steps to resolve.
- Update EGS version
- Force update, verify and repair Heroic version
- Redo the process of copying your EGS folder, select merge and replace when applicable
Thanks! I'll add this to the guide for anyone else looking for this answer.

FYI, I started a thread here for support related issues: https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/361429/unofficial-linux-support-thread#latest
I'll try to keep the top level comment up to date with the latest information on getting DBD running on Linux.
-
For anyone that's getting "EAC client cannot be instantiated" even on Heroic Launcher:
- Open DBD's game page in Heroic Launcher -- NOT the Game Settings (Gear Icon) but click on the actual picture of the game
- Click on the "Three Dots" menu icon in the top right
- Click "Force Game Update If Available"
- Wait for it to download and launch the game and it should work
If that still doesn't work, follow the steps again and instead click "Verify and Repair" in the last step. Occasionally my game will randomly give me that error when I launch and this has fixed it for me every single time.

U still have to:
" In the game directory copy the EasyAntiCheat folder to DeadByDaylight/Binaries/EGS/" (or link it)
Was not mentioned in the guide above. After that it worked for me.
Oh yeah, I'll add that to my previous post. It works without it for some people and I'm not sure why. I can play without copying/linking the folder for some reason. I'm on Ubuntu 22.10, maybe that's why.

I only get this error, I already tried to redownload the game. Does anyone know how to solve this / has the same issue?
I assume you've tried right clicking DBD => Properties => Local Files => Verify integrity of game files... but if you haven't, try that. If that doesn't work, try deleting any folder in steam with the name 381210 because that number is DBD's Steam Game ID which means those files are related to DBD, things like settings and precompiled shaders and what not.
If all of the above doesn't work try deleting the DBD folder and re-downloading the entire game.

Anyone post a video tutorial on how to setup from scratch the supposedly working version of DBD via Heroic Launcher?
Step by step:
- Get DBD from the Epic Games Store -- which is free btw
- Download Heroic Launcher and attach it to your EGS account so it will see that version of DBD
- Go into Steam and make sure Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime is installed. You can find it in your Library if you change the view-mode from "Games" to "Tools" -- It's between the search bar and the home button on the left side of the steam UI
- Right click Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime and go to Manage => Browse Local Files and either take note of the path to this folder, or move up one folder and copy the entire folder somewhere easy to remember.
- In Heroic Launcher click the gear icon to go to settings on DBD. Make sure some version of Proton is selected as the "Wine Version", people have said basically any version of experimental or GE works. You can easily download different versions of wine inside Heroic if you need to in the "Wine Manager" section of the menu on the left side. Make sure "EasyAntiCheat Runtime" is DISABLED. Scroll down a bit, make sure "Use Steam Runtime" is DISABLED. Under "Environment Variables" add the following in the first box PROTON_EAC_RUNTIME and in the second box put the path to the Steam Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime from the previous step.
That's it. Launch the game and you should be able to play multiplayer. There is currently no way to link your Steam account to your EGS account, so if EGS is not your primary way of playing then you're starting at level 1 with nothing.
EDIT: Adding info provided by user _ManlyMaid
U still have to:
" In the game directory copy the EasyAntiCheat folder to DeadByDaylight/Binaries/EGS/" (or link it)

BHVR, I think we all understand your reluctance to enable Linux users into DBD because supporting a whole new operating system is a lot of extra work for basically no gain, but nobody is asking for you to actually support Linux / Steam Deck. All we're asking is that you enable Linux support on your anti-cheat which Valve has said is as simple as sending an email to your anti-cheat provider. Valve and the Linux community will figure out the rest, but we can't do anything about anti-cheat technology until you send that email.
Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) already has Linux support ready to go and operative in many of the titles that they work with, Valve is completely correct that for BHVR to enable Linux support in DBD all it takes is a single email to EAC saying "we want you to enable Linux for Easy Anti-Cheat for our game". After EAC is working, Valve and Proton will handle support for the actual game. No extra work needed from BHVR.
But, you might be thinking, maybe it's a trap and this will actually put extra strain on your player support system. I don't think any Linux users would complain if BHVR also released a statement saying basically "while we are enabling Linux support for Easy Anti-Cheat, we will not be providing any support for Linux users going forward, if you need support talk to Valve and Proton".
Valve has already taken the onus of support onto themselves and if Valve withdraws that support then nobody would blame you for rescinding Linux support for EAC. Valve is offering BHVR and every game developer the option to include Linux users without needing to offer them any support what-so-ever. It's win-win!
So although I get where you're coming from BHVR, after all of the above is considered, there's really no reason for so much reluctance. Just turn on EAC support, release a statement saying there will be zero player support provided and BHVR holds the right to fully revoke EAC Linux support at any time, for any reason.
There's no cost to you, no extra man hours, no support needed. We're just asking you to send an email.

A simple solution that I think would add a lot to the game is an "End It" action available to survivors who have been slugged for a certain duration, maybe 1 minute on the ground. Give them an option to kill themselves, and perhaps penalize the killer for having survivors kill themselves. It fits with the lore, the entity certainly wouldn't like that, and I feel it would de-incentivize killers from slugging and give survivors a way to voice their opinion about the killer's actions aside from simply DC'ing.
-
The Thing would be incredible
Imagine the mind ######### of a power it would be for the killer to transform into a survivor, start "working on a gen" to lure survivors in and then turn into the killer right in front of their eyes.
