  • Sacrificing yourself on the hook is what you're supposed to do. Not disconnecting. Disconnecting is removing yourself from the game, dying on a hook is being part of the game - albeit more or less losing.

  • Wait, so if Survivors hang around at the exit gates waiting for hits and you give them some before they leave, Killers don't get BP for it?

    Survivors definitely do.

Yeah that sounds like an imbalance that needs to be corrected.

  • Hmm...I'm not sure you just saying I'm proving the argument makes that a valid statement in any way, shape, or form. Especially since the entire reason the field of view is locked is as a function of the core gameplay. I mean the killer literally plays in first person instead of third for gameplay functionality.

Should the game be made in such a way so that it's accessible to as many people as it can be? Absolutely. But at the same time the same person who said that Motion Sickness is a terrible thing and should completely be able to be countered through any means necessary, also said they didn't want to give up a perk slot for it.

Does that not strike you as arguing in bad faith?

If FOV could be rebalanced in a way that would make it customisable to individual needs while also not affecting gameplay, I'd be absolutely behind that. However, arguing that FOV has no gameplay impact in a game where it clearly forms a crux of the gameplay - i.e. visibility - is arguing in bad faith.

Field of view has gameplay implications in literally every first person game, and there's nothing wrong with that. If the argument is that survivors will lose just a few of their juking options and techs even with the 800 pallets, vaults, and strong loops and perks, that's honestly a pretty weak argument.

Not really, when you're playing "hide and seek with death, the game".

Field of view is critically important in such a game where hiding is core gameplay.

Honestly that's just arguing in bad faith, you didn't even try.

  • They're waiting for you to die so they can eat your flesh, dude.

  • "Most of you would do it and I wouldn't expect anything else of you."

I've never dc'd from a game and I can cheerfully represent some of those people who aren't interested in the forums and also do not dc when faced with an adversarial situation. If you really want out, just die on hook, it doesn't take long.

The reason the game has a dc bloodpoint bonus for the remaining players is because they realise with one less player the game is less enjoyable and less balanced. It's pretty well recognised that survivor teams are balanced for 4 players vs the one killer. Taking yourself out of that equation for...no particular reason? seems a little petty.

Even better to say that everyone else would act that way so what you did was justified.

I like how in so many areas of life people spin that lie to themselves. "Oh everyone else is awful so I can be too", "oh no one does this so I shouldn't have to do it either", "oh no one cares about this so why should I?"

It's a big lie. Honestly being put to the test and failing outright in the world right now. We know a lot of people are making the world work at no small risk to themselves, and even outside of a pandemic, the world is literally built on the idea that person 1 won't attack person 2, and that in fact person 1 will aid person 2 in most situations.

    That's how civilisation works.

  • It's definitely time of day. Sometimes queueing as survivor takes ages, sometimes it's killer. I usually switch what I'm doing if I've been queueing for more than 2 minutes, and I find the other role is usually instant.

Then that just leaves the issue that you'd be playing with three perks and no motion sickness. Still at a disadvantage by not using all four perks slots. Shadowborn is definitely not a powerful enough effect to warrant a perk slot.

    I mean...what?

You do realise the perk itself has gameplay implications over and above your motion sickness, right? That's why it's a thing. And yes, I've used the perk myself and had a waaay easier time targeting survivors.

You're trying to have your cake and eat it too.

I'm just trying to figure out whether you realise that or not.

  • You're not. You lost.

You could try a chest though, sometimes you get hella lucky with flukey keys that I can only assume were sent by the entity to reward your devotion to the booty.

  • My issue is it got to the point of not getting any generators done until the hex was found, which involves stealthing around the map using small game for an indeterminate amount of time.

I'm not a red ranker so I can only tell of my experience between green and yellow, but I was terrible at skillchecks. It took me a heck of a long time to git gud at them, and now I'll hit maybe 2 great skill checks per match, depending on how many I do.

With oldskool ruin, by the end there, the teams I were on were getting 2 generators done in most matches, and all dying most of the time. Ruin was hella good at slowing down the match but honestly it started to just make me give up before the match had even started. Having to take 3-5 minutes at the beginning of almost every match to find a hex so I could even do a generator was just depressing, and adding more people almost always hurt its progress.

If you can find a medium where it doesn't penalise "newbies" so badly, that'd be great, but as it was...it was just a match killer.

  • The Trapper's traps kinda suck when they're around a hook, but the Trapper doesn't have all that many tools so you can't really blame people for using his only one.

Most other types of traps I find fine because they have easier counterplay without alerting the killer, but that's just a biased way of thinking about things.

I think I mind more because...you're essentially going out on a limb to get someone anyway, and there's an audio notification to unhooking which brings the killer at least half the time. If you add a trap to that, you basically make leaving people to die the better option, and that's a hard pill to swallow.

  • It always boggles my mind that even in games where players quickly respawn people get really afraid to risk themselves for any reason at all. So I can only assume that in dbd these poor pitiable souls have been traumatised and terrorised so badly that they are afraid to do anything for fear of being slaughtered like cattle.

  • The problem is being a dev team that has to balance a new in-built layer for a fairly complicated game.

Separating things into perks was a smart move, since it contains the balance within neat little packages that can be passed around, but when you add intrinsic abilities to characters it really compounds balancing issues. Like really really.

But let’s be completely real here, none of the reasons you listed warrant people being told to get cancer or kill theirselves. It’s legit insane behaviour. I’ve said it time and time again. If a game gets you this angry and hateful. Stop playing. If you’re not mentally stable enough to handle losing, the problem is with you. I’ve encountered plenty of bugs and BS on this game and plenty of other games. You just suck it up and move on.

Most aren't able to control themselves and have no real understanding of how they hurt other people. It's not really real to them, and on top of that some of them like being able to inflict pain because it gives them a modicum of control and power - which they usually don't have in their own lives.

It's also definitely about the game setting itself. This is a game where people get killed in pretty horrifying ways, and as much as people try to pretend that is nothing, it's not really. When you see someone hunted and tortured, it should have an affect on your mind and...that's what leads to the intense feelings and polarisation.

  • £40...so like $50 I guess. I was about to drop a further...er...$30 on Auric cells recently but then realised that's about 3-6 other games the way I buy 'em, lol.

Still need the last few dlcs though.

  • "This game should have downsides for survivors"

I do wonder sometimes if people realise that being stabbed, and hooked, and killed, all the while screaming is a bit unsettling. Or whether everyone is just completely desensitised to it.

  • The suggestion I made when joining the forums (and the one that made me join the forums) was to add an aura perk slot for survivors that would be disabled in SWF. That way you could narrow the communication gap between swf and solo and be able to balance killer more effectively.

I think a lot of people don't run auras because they need that slot for something else and swf greatly lowers the need for them, so this might help them be on more even footing.

If we want to expand on the idea of restricting perks, though. You could potentially go the path of making the aura slot be the only slot to accept auras, and have that disabled in swf, but...that may bring its own troubles.

  • I often perform worse in swf than I do in solo. I die much quicker a lot of the time, and a lot of information isn't really all that helpful when you're being chased by a killer.

Obviously I'm not a god-tier survivor though (just a rank 8, idk how), and I do think it helps a lot with co-ordinating what people are doing. But...tbh when the survivors spread out and stealth, they're much harder to get at than running around next to each other.

SWF is a cause for concern, but if you feel like it's a huge advantage at every rank...well that's just not true.

So... killer must be op until you get higher ranks? That´s how you stand to the 80% of people who starts to play and give up?

Nice... thats why the community is kinda small... "let´s defend the bubble think".

    Unfortunately...yes.

As a survivor I survive about 20% of my games. I'm not good at gaming and I'm usually too altruistic for my own good, but I've got about 250 hours in the game and tbh it took a long time for me to figure out a lot of things about how to play the game.

And the problem is killers will wash you out if you don't really know what you're doing. The only saving grace is that a lot of the time yellow-ranked killers don't know what they're doing either. The curve for learning how to survive as a survivor compared to how to kill as a killer is much steeper...but once you really know what you're doing, it really does become one against four, and that can be hard.

Though I also think if you're a good killer you clean up at red ranks too, but it's much more of a challenge.

  • People have become bad sports during the lockdown, imo.

I really dislike survivor trolls. At least the killer is out to kill, survivors getting cocky and lording it over people is just distasteful.

It feels like someone will have a bad match - on whatever side - and then they'll bring their anger into the next match, which is more likely to be a fairer one, with a more sportsman-like killer or good survivors, and then get all of those players mad with the trolling or camping or whatever. And then it spreads from them into the next match, like dbd's own little hate pandemic :\

  • I do feel the OP is not wrong, though.

It's usually about 25% decent or friendly comments and 75% vitriol and hate that I really think adds to everyone's salt in this game.

  • I do feel like the buzzing starts later than it used to. The suggestion of a range increase is a bit eek, but it does feel like the buzzing was moved a little later than it used to be...was it?

  • I dunno, I feel like you're mistaking empathy for compassion.

To be honest, I don't think giving the last survivor the hatch is any kind of compassion or empathy. I think it's a misguided thing people do to make themselves feel better but actually goes against the game and fudges the escape numbers.

In rare cases it can be done as an acknowledgement that the game was sabotaged somehow (terrible teammates or disconnections), but most of the time it's not that, it's just a kind of condescending pity.

If you truly wanted to be compassionate in game and as someone said already, you wouldn't take someone to the hatch, you'd make them find it on their own and let them think they got away.

But that's not what people do. They exercise their power instead and pretend it's compassion or sympathy.

The fact that it's so widely accepted is pretty disturbing tbh.

  • Lol, swap it with No Mither xD

  • I just don't think they add anything to the game.

  • Personally, I think all killers should have dab emotes that they do whenever they try to swing at a hook. Also if they're camping. And if they're undetectable.

    And in a chase.

And maybe have four killers in a row doing it.

    What? It could happen!

  • The locker grab for DS is a thing I've only just become aware of and tbh it seems a bit like an unintentional gameplay thing that probably needs to be patched out.

The rest of it is fine imo. Just not...diving into a locker when a killer's coming to force them to grab you. That's like a two in one functionality.

  • They could make Shadowborn a general perk instead though, right?

Although I guess the Wraith is a free killer, and just like a perk like self-care, you could unlock Shadowborn first and put it on everyone...assuming you could survive the motion sickness (or play survivor enough to earn that amount of bloodpoints).

  • The weird thing about camping is always the response that people should just do gens. That sort of ignores the idea that probably a fair amount of people play survivor because it has other people on a team.

I'm just saying, there's a reason people try to save other people in this game, and mostly it's not bloodpoints. (Although I guess that's why a lot of people get killed in horror movies too, lol.)

  • I think if any game has a situation that is so one-sided that there's nothing for one team to do, then it should just end. No game should have a situation where people are just wasting time in it.

Maybe the solution to this is for the killer to open the door? But have them be buffed or compensated in some kind of way to make it fair.

It's a tricky thing to suggest since there are many endgame perks, and stacking a multibuff like that might not leave any hope for survivors anyway. But...it's not easy to down survivors at full health running for the exit gates, and it wouldn't be good to take a match a killer was winning and turn it into only a half-win because some survivors wanted to just waste time.

  • It makes a big difference imo. Also the size of the character you play.

  • @illusion I was going off your tone.

Y'know what, never mind. I like a good debate but this isn't it.

  • In all your examples, one person trades their life for the other's.

I do this a lot, not quite as blatantly since I'm trying to survive but it often ends up like that. I can tell you my survival rate is close to 20%.

I know I'm usually only buying someone 10-20s as a last ditch attempt to save them, but I hope for that one out of every few where they manage to get away and survive.

    I die.

Somehow that means BT is overpowered and you lost-?

OP said community, not just survivors. Yes, both sides can be just as bad. Killers, however, do see more of it because they are in the game until the end. If a survivor dies early they just move on to the next match and don't see the chat.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1284117#Comment_1284117

You didn't quote anyone, so I assume you are referring to the OP.

That's not what he/she said. They got accused of camping when someone was unhooked right in front of him seconds after the hook. They did not say they were accused of tunneling. Even if he did hit the unhooked survivor, it was the unhookers fault for putting the hooked player in that position.

Yah, I realise. The OP did use an example of survivors though, so that's why I said it's everyone.

Also, I almost always watch the match until the game ends. Usually because I'm invested in it. I only usually move on if I think my fellow teammates were rubbish (troll style) or the killer was farming us maliciously. So, y'know, maybe not assume who sees what.

There are good people in this game and the community but honestly it just takes that one hella salty insulting chump to make what otherwise would have been a decent experience leave a bad taste in the mouth.

I honestly think that's why everyone gets so salty after a while...not so much the actual game, even though there's a fair bit there, but that every few matches, someone leaves a bitter air. And unlike another game which maybe would be more upbeat in the game itself, this game just doesn't lend itself to that.

  • It's not just survivors. Had a killer the other day camp us and call us toxic because one person had DS and worked on a gen in sight of the killer.

I dunno about you guys but a survivor working on a gen in front of me is like "oh hey, free candy", not a cause to get salty.

But it seems like since people have been forced to be home, a loooot more players are salty about everything. To the point of it really being a lot of whining and unsportsmanlike behaviour on both sides, which feels pretty lame.

Honestly, what does it take to get hooked in peace around here? 🤣

  • I hear you Jakeroo, but I dunno. Ideally I'd like it in the loading screen, since that's a whole lot of wasted space otherwise, but when you mention using the escape menu to check if someone has DS etc, it feels more like strategising for that person. And to me, people in this game are really unpredictable. Some are really scared to put themselves out on a limb, others will throw themselves into death at just the chance to save you, and that rarely comes down to perks.

I'll admit when you've all been slugged, knowing if someone has unbreakable would be very useful. But I dunno, I just feel like if in the end what we're trying to do is normalise information between swf and solo, then what we'd really be wanting eventually is the set of perk icons around your character icon in game - since that's the most effective way to display information that doesn't take you out of the experience to check.

I guess it just comes down to whether what we want is the game to have a lot more information available to survivors by default.

  • It really needs to be able to be disabled. The cinematic plus having to press a key to start the game loading, are two unnecessary things that really shouldn't be there.

I wouldn't be bothered if I just had to load dbd up once, but quite often swf lobbies drop players after a match, and it no longer recognises whether you or they are still in a match or online. As that's a pretty difficult issue to tackle, I'd say at the least please disable the video so it's not so irritating on every restart.

  • I don't think it's unfair to want it to have to take a second to stop the regression. Whether that's an easy thing to do or not is another question.

  • It always surprises me that people think the game should be balanced to where one player beats four players all the time.

For some reason people seem to take it like an insult if a player escapes. Like it should never happen that someone should have a chance to not be slaughtered like cattle.

    Interesting take, honestly.

  • I mean, I personally can't easily tell who's on last hook or not when I'm the killer, but if I wounded someone and then below their name there was one strike left, I'd know.

I'm not really basing my comment on red ranks though.

And during survivor rounds, I dunno. I still get games where people are working with the killer or body blocking or similar. It's not exactly rare, it's like 10-15% of the time or so that it happens.

I'm not against the idea, but I do feel like, considering the amount of camping and tunnelling that seems to be happening right now, it wouldn't be ideal for a killer to have this info (from my perspective)...and then I'm kinda like...does anyone need it then?

  • I'm down for the icons to be visible in the lobby.

Not sure about in game, though - I kinda feel like it might be detrimental if people are checking their ESC menu and trying to coordinate or strategise like that. Having an impression on what's coming in to the game would be good though.

  • Hmm...I'm not sure about this. I think Killers could use it to their advantage, either going harder for someone with less hooks, or just by knowing how well they're doing getting survivors overall.

With Survivors, I kinda worry about people trolling you with it, either getting you killed or sacrificing you because you have more "lives" left.

Other than that, though, I don't really have an issue.
