Is It Normal to Need These Settings Just to See?

My eyes are killing me. I play usually 15 hours a day but I absolutely cannot play without the Backlight being at 100%

Do those of you that play on console have similar settings?

  • You play 15 hours per day usually?

that is definitely not healthy for your eyes/sight. Remember to take breaks and let your eyes see natural light/distance etc.

15 hours is a perfect time actually: there's 1 hour left for food and toilet breaks and the remaining 8 are good for a healthy sleeping schedule :)

Yeah, I lost my job in February. I hit 4,000 hours around this time yesterday. Just hit 4,015 now.

I am an insomniac. I have been awake since Monday.

  • A player after my own heart.

However, I must urge you to do what it took me years to do. Seek medical help for your insomnia. It only gets worse when you get older, it ages you faster as I'm figuring out.

Likewise, if I can't discourage you from playing for 15 hours, allow me to remind you to get up every 30 minutes (2-3 games) and walk around for 5 minutes. This helps with blood flow, improving circulation, reduces the chances of blood clots, helps activates muscles and helps your eyes with strain. It may also be wise to apply a blue light filter, if your TV doesn't have one, I don't think blue light glasses are expensive.

Yeah you are joking (hopefully) - but it is a health risk whatsoever.

Seek help - please. And playing 15 hours a day might contribute to this condition.

Listen to Pulsars advice. Maybe even get a stand-up desk to at least play some of the time standing up.

Invest some of the playing time instead in your health and/or finding a new job (which can be frustrating at times I get that)

  • Oh wow that's alot. I typically play a couple hours on a good day, with breaks. Somedays I don't play at all, on the rare occasion I'll play 5 or so hours (usually when I'm sick and spending my time on the couch, like I am currently. Still with breaks). I'm not an optometrist but if your eyes are hurting then there's a good chance it's related to your gaming.

  • How do Twitch Streamers do this though? Some of them play for a living and surely must have more hours than me. I've heard a few people say they have 10,000 hours in the game.

No one says they are living a healthy lifestyle. Though they usually don’t play 15 hours a day either - hopefully. It’s not about total hours.

I have seen some of them with stand desks as well.

also everyone’s eyes are different, so while they might not be as severely affected as you doesn’t mean you should continue it.

also also, I think console versions do have some pretty bad visuals and having backlight on might still be better for your eyes. I do not know about that. I just know that staring 15 hours a day at the same screen will cause problems with your eyes.

I always try to take like an extended break like for a week, but then there's Double XP or a Bloodrush or an event or a new Tome. I feel like this game is a job. An enjoyable job, but a job nonetheless.

  • Take care of your eyes and make sure to rest well! ☹️

  • Interestingly I always use a third-party software to bring my monitor brightness to %0. My eyes get red and tired super quick. I can't see as good as people who use filters to up the brightness but I don't care.🤭

Facing Myers, Pig and Ghostface are the reasons I'm terrified to go low %

They are hard enough to see sometimes even in bright conditions 😱

It’s seems like you do not understand the problem, do I repeat:

it’s not about total hours over a long period of time.

the problem is that you play usually 15 hours per day. That seems like you do not take enough breaks in between matches, and have time for a healthy lifestyle in your everyday-life. Your eyes need time off the screen every day every half an hour. See natural light, look into different distances, and you need to move.

I don't even leave my apartment anymore. I'm on 3 different prescription eye drops and the eye doctor has no clue what's wrong. She never did ask me about my screen time and now I'm almost convinced that's what it is.

See another doctor. It’s generally good to get a second independent opinion.

there might be other issues of course but this may contribute to your issues as well.

and take time for your health. Even at least half an hour a day going on a walk and not looking at your phone will help in many regards - even if it might not be a direct solution to your eye problems. It will help with blood circulation, Vitamine D, mental health, fitness and eye strain.

I had my physical last week, I'm supposed to begin high dose Vitamin D because my levels are very low according to my bloodwork.

It is still summer weather where I live and I cannot tolerate heat. I hate summer and heat. It makes me physically sick.

I get that. But then try to do the walking in the morning when it’s not as heated up maybe? (I also know it’s easier said than done)

don’t try to find excuses, in the end it is your body and your health and nobody else’s.

I can't speak for all, but most of the streamers I watch average about 4 hour streams and they also take days off. There are some who do stream every day, one in particular comes to mind but I've seen him wear glasses often so he does have eye issues to some degree. There's also the fact that everyone is different, and eye issues are often genetic. So some people are more susceptible to issues than others.

I'm sorry to hear you're going through some tough times at the moment. I completely understand how gaming can give an escape from reality, but it's not a particularly healthy coping mechanism. Look into therapy, and force yourself to get out in the sun and be more active. You might feel safe and comfortable cooped up inside but you're depriving yourself of other valuable mental and physical needs. Take care of yourself!

  • A Video Game Forum is not the place for medical advice, and I'm afraid I will be closing this up here.

I am so sorry you are going through so much, CountOfTheFog, and happy you are here. Also, thank you everyone that respectfully responded on the thread, and for trying to answer with empathy and concern for their wellbeing.

While the game is the focal point, your eyes, screen brightness, and screentime, are in the realm of being best answered by a medical professional who can see your medical history, test if needed, and help you to the best of their medical ability.
