Obsession is messed up

Why are there games where someone who doesn’t have DS/ OOO/SS/MoM is the obsession while other survivors are the ones running it and you don’t have any obsession perks/add ons as killer?

  • Because having the relevant perks only grants a higher chance of being obsession, but the presence of obsession perks on more than one player means that all survivors have some chance. It's not a bug, it's a feature - one I don't like, but there it is.

  • That makes no sense. Why would a survivor be an obsession when they are the only ones not running an obsession perk. Also, I assume you are implying that a survivor who runs an obsession perk is essentially putting other survivors in their team at risk for being he obsession?

  • I'm not implying anything. I'm outright stating that's how the mechanic works.

If any perk or addon indicates that there will be an obsession, each survivor has a 25% chance of being selected. If specifically a survivor is running an obsession perk, they steal a % chance from each other survivor per perk, making it more likely that they'll be selected. This way, if multiple survivors are running obsession perks, each one will have a proportionately higher chance of being selected but may simply not be.

Last, there's no real 'risk' to being obsession. Decisive Strike can juggle even Dying Light and Rancor away in those low-rank games where they pose an issue.

It mostly works like that for DS

  • Devs have stated that random Survivors get the Obsession instead the one who actually has the Obsession perk so that Killers can't play around DS.

Because #CoUnTeRpLaY is a Survivor privilege.

    ?

  • Having those perks just increases the chance of being the obsession, plus there is no real risk of being the obsession.

The #CoUnTeRpLaY to DS is just not to tunnel anyone, or at least only slug the people that you do
