THE POINT SYSTEM - Promote Build Variety and Break the Meta (Perk/Item/Addon change suggestions)

Just an idea, but honestly players shouldn't be allowed to bring just 4 perks.

Perks should be allotted on a point system. Instead of 4 slots, maybe make it 6. But perks have a "point value" assigned to them based on their strength.

As an example, let's just say you are allowed to assign yourself 20 points worth of perks. But really strong meta perks are worth larger amounts of points. So if you want to bring say Lithe and Finesse, each of those could be worth something like 9 points each. This brings your current build to 18/20 points. So you can bring another perk, but it would have to be a weak perk and you would only have 3 total perks in your build.

But conversely, you could also bring upwards of 6 weaker perks that add up to less than or equal to 20 points. This would promote build variety, would make players think about how well perks work together, and really question if a powerful "meta" perk is worth bringing. And it stops every player from bringing the same 4 perks because they're all meta and individually powerful. We can also apply the same rule to items and addons to prevent only the most powerful items or killer power addons being brought into each match.

Overall this would promote build variety and completely break the meta. I'd be willing to bet while there might be some notable builds, builds won't be nearly as common amongst both killers and survivors as they are now.

And obviously this is a barebones recommendation. Numbers and values would have to be constantly messed with and changed in the earlier testing stages. But another positive on the dev side of things is that perks wouldn't necessarily have to be completely reworked or rebalanced all the time. A lot of perks could just have their point value tweaked and adjusted accordingly.

I think this is an idea worth discussing and toying with and could breathe new life into the game. Of course, I also believe the try-hards and sweats would probably have a problem with this because they can't bully an entire squad of survivors or conversely a 4 stack can't just bully a killer because everyone is just bringing all of the most powerful items, addons, and perks all the time.

  • It's not a terrible idea, but it would require a great deal of constant balance from BHVR, which I don't have faith they can do. They're simply too bogged down to be keeping up with such a system, and it would further complicate balance. By that last part I mean that perk X may be balanced in light of four perks going into a match. But when you can potentially match perk X with perks Y, Z, N, M, and O, it may start to show a synergy progression that unbalances it.

Has potential, just don't have a whole lot of belief they could pull it off.

  • I feel this would make the game even harder to learn potentially?

RE Resistance did its "perks" in this format, though they were just passives and it basically made it so you had to grind for the most optimal ones, DBD would definitely suffer from the same.

On the other hand rn, you still have the strong perks, but there is so many compared to what there used to be, you can't go wrong with picking what you like.
