Suggestion: Redefining DBD’s Win Condition: The Blueprint for Baseline Balance & Endgame Showdowns
The Vision
Transform Dead by Daylight from a selfish "did I personally escape?" grind into a high-stakes horror movie finale. By shifting the focus to collective team success and scaling rewards, we can turn the endgame into a thrilling, high-tension gamble where both sides leave satisfied.
1. The Target Outcome: 1–2 Escapes (2–3 Kills)
The standard, most common match outcome should result in a 2k or 3k.
- For Killers: Securing kills feels powerful, dominant, and earned.
- For Survivors: The threat remains terrifyingly real, keeping the core horror elements alive.
2. The Gameplay Baseline: At Least 6 Hooks
A balanced, engaging match should naturally result in at least 6 total hooks spread across the Survivor team at or near the end game. This ensures the Killer gets plenty of action and points, while proving that the Survivors actively shared the pressure instead of letting one teammate get tunneled out early.
3. The Scaling "Shared Victory" & Endgame Gamble
Introduce a team-wide reward that triggers if at least one Survivor escapes, which scales dynamically to turn the final minutes into a high-stakes poker game:
- The Base Payout: If 1 person escapes, everyone (including those who died early) receives a guaranteed team success bonus. A heroic sacrifice to let someone open the gate is always rewarded.
- The Multiplier: Every additional survivor who makes it out alive acts as a reward multiplier for the entire party.
- The High-Risk Showdown: When a teammate is hooked during the Endgame Collapse, the survivors at the gate face a true gamble. Do they take a safe, modest payout and leave? Or do they risk running back into the danger zone to rescue their friend, multiplying the bounty for the whole squad? It rewards brave, calculated cooperation while punishing reckless greed.
4. The "Perfect Escape" Premium
A 4-man escape should never be the default expectation. It must remain a rare, legendary achievement that multiplies rewards to the maximum, reserved exclusively for trials featuring outstanding individual looping, flawless team rescue coordination, and a necessary stroke of good luck.
Why This Works
- It eliminates endgame selfishness: Solo queue players will stop abandoning teammates the second the gates open because saving a friend directly increases their own final payout.
- It creates peak cinematic tension: The endgame becomes a thrilling tactical showdown where players willingly choose to risk it all for a massive team boon, creating the ultimate high-risk, high-reward horror experience.
Comments
I think the first question most would ask is what are the killer's payouts like? Does he get full points and achievements for 3k or is there an incentive for him to always slug for 4k?
And if someone does get tunneled out then they are now incentivised to sit through the entire match in spectate to see if they get bonus points at the end.
Also wouldnt the fact that the whole team gets a payout if 1 person makes it out, cause players to always take the safer rout and leave someone behind? Unless the multiplier for each person is pretty high itl never be worth it. We currently risk saving eachother out of pure altruism, tieing points to leaving someone behind would cause people to just leave more often.
And now survivors would have a reason to get mad at eachother for not leaving someone behind because the person dieing on the hook would have gotten more of a payout if you just let bubba continue to take screenshots of their belt charms.
Great questions, and you’ve hit the exact design friction this system is meant to address!
To clarify, this proposal is intended as a high-level conceptual blueprint, not a final patch note. The granular point tuning and exact math would absolutely rely on BHVR. However, the true value of this blueprint goes way beyond just the endgame—it gives BHVR a universal design anchor to balance the entire game’s future (Killers' powers, perks, maps, and items).
Currently, BHVR balances new content in a vacuum because the baseline for a "healthy match" is completely vague. With this framework, they finally get a concrete target metric:
By shifting the win condition to collective team success and establishing a clear gameplay baseline, BHVR gets the exact structural framework they need to balance every future piece of content they release.
Win is when you can effortlessly win every game for both sides who complain about balance the most. You simply have to run Ghoul with pain res, dms, surge and corrupt nad yamori mask and cempetide otherwise you cant win every game. :D
Errr... I think you missed the point of the post.
You're talking about running specific meta killers and slowdown perks just to sweat for an effortless win. That is exactly the kind of balancing trap this proposal is designed to fix.
This suggestion isn't about how to win a match right now using a specific build. It is a foundational blueprint for BHVR to redefine the game's core win conditions and match baselines (targeting a healthy 6 hooks and 1–2 escapes). Giving the developers a universal anchor like this allows them to balance future powers, perks, and maps properly, ensuring players don't have to rely on meta-slaving just to have a satisfying match.
