Duo was bashed for cleansing Plaything when killer had Pentimento, explain this to me? More info
Killer had a full hex build consisting of Retribution, Devour Hope, Plaything and Pentimento
My duo was cleansing her Plaything and another player dmmed me telling me to tell my duo to not cleanse hexes when pentimento pops up. Why is this?? Is it truly a bad thing to cleanse hexes if a killer has pentimento? I responded saying my duo was cleansing her plaything and the person said "Oh I didnt know." then unadded me.
Now im just confused lol. It it better to leave the hexes active against penti or no??

Not that it excuses any rudeness from them, if it was only plaything then it's better to leave it in case of penti. A full hex build it's generally best to break what you don't know.
To be frank there's very little reason to cleanse plaything unless its an indoor map.
Even less so if you're in comms.
it's situational. them taking it personally is weird though.
plaything and obliviousness from other hexes forces pentimento to come into play because killers benefit from survivors suffering from oblivious if they're not coordinated or situationally aware. the downside for the killer having pentimento is that if all survivors are careful about stealthing to cleanse totems, then it doesn't really do anything for them. this, of course, depends on how long survivors can deny chase to be able to clear up the totems. but realistically that's the only counterplay to this build if a counterforce player is not on standby or proper coordination isn't available.
if you're able to stick gens however, you can play without cleansing much and still fight through penti just fine.
unfortunately this build is a setup for a very long game, so you have to be strategic and leverage stealth. with retribution, this makes it more difficult, but baiting chase while 3 others stealth is crucial until a good portion of the totems are burned and the team can safely get back on gens.
okay so while people shouldn't take what people do in trials personally if it's not against ToS or obviously motivated by bad intentions, the correct play here is not to cleanse Plaything because 1) you're not cleansing Devour, which is the most dangerous hex perk in this setup and the crux of the Killer's strategy, when you know that it's not Devour because unlike Devour Plaything is revealed to you after a set time, 2) you're possibly giving the Killer a stack of Pentimento, which slows healing and generator progress and generally makes everyone's lives more difficult, and most of all 3) if you know about Retribution then you know that cleansing the totem will reveal everyone on the map, which, especially when combined with Devour's instadown, puts your teammates in real jeopardy. All that for the fairly limited benefit of not being oblivious, which isn't really an issue if you're not on an indoor map and you have some situational awareness. Your friend messed up and it could have got everyone killed if it turned out badly.
Ah, a case of the optimisation of this game resulting in people getting flamed when they don't utilise said optimisations.
In this very thread, there's even talk like 'the correct play'.
You seem rather new to the game so instead of like some other people in this discussion have said that "It's just plaything so it's not worth getting rid of" I will give you better advice.
First, cleansing totems against Pentimento is usually always a bad idea unless vital to the game. The totems that need to be cleansed would mainly be Ruin and Devour Hope. However, as a newer player I can understand why you would think cleansing Plaything is also important, because not having a terror radius can really suck for someone that doesn't have hundreds of hours in the game. Hell I sometimes even cleanse it just because I dislike Plaything.
The main advice I would give you is slowly learning to play without a terror radius and being more vigilant when on generators. Be looking around constantly. Now there will be times you will just get caught off guard and that's fine but the more vigilant you become the better at not playing with a terror radius you will become. Don't worry about what randoms on the game tell you. It will come with experience and just understanding the game. Play how you feel is best and go into each match with the mindset of getting better and improving your skill level.
People always want to tell you how to play and blame you for losses. Of course they are never to blame.
Being constantly oblivious is a real debuff for a survivor so cleansing plaything is generally a good idea. Pentimento slows down gens. The main thing with pentimento is to not let the killer light all 5 at once because then you're stuck with the maximum slowdown.
It's a rock and a hard place problem. You either leave plaything up and suffer in chase and getting ambushed on gens. Or deal with the active slowdown from pentimento plus it's passive slowdown of making you crack more totems. Both can easily lose you the game. Starting chases injured or being gen grabbed will snowball a game a lot quicker than slow gens.
My motto is, if it glows it goes. If you avoid the plaything totems then you might miss the devour hope, which will stop the game dead. And when ppl whinge after a match about how you played, got to make a decision whether you think the "advice" is valid. Very often it's just bellyaching and not terribly useful.
The important thing is to be ready to cleanse Penti. Many people cleanse Plaything and then forget about it.
Like anytime you cleanse a totem remember where it is and if you notice Penti going go there and take it out. Its not that big of a deal.
It's not a clear rule.
Open map and easy to spot killer? Don't break plaything.
Indoor map and hard to spot killer? Break it.
It depends on the killer tbh, against most it's probably better to leave the plaything up but like if it's someone like bubba or myers who have high lethality while being very quiet and you need to hear the TR to give yourself a headstart so you don't go down I'm saying "screw it we'll just play the long game" because that's better than letting them sneak up on you and giving easy downs.
In this case if the devour was still up I don't think it's a huge deal to cleanse the plaything was up because the killer had high lethality so as long as you're mentality prepared to remember where it was and cleanse pentimento and play slow and patient.
The problem here is everyone has to be on the same page or things will go south kinda quick, it's like playing against plague. Cleansing or not cleansing are equally viable but everyone has to do the same thing or it's not gonna work. These are the cases where the gap between SWF and soloQ are the highest unfortunately because there's really no way to communicate these things.
