Solo Q tips for beginners

Learn how to:

1. Sabotage hooks!

2. Hook save teammates on their first phase when you're at full health

3. Take protection hits at full health or endurance

4. Risk a first or second hook if someone else is about to be on their 2nd or last hook

5. Not escape a trial unless the killer forces you out when teammate(s) haven't reached the gate

6. Maybe try not to open the gate fully until teammates are safe?

7. Commit to unhooking when at full health sometimes

Please, for mine and others like mines situation heed these 7 commandments. Don't be afraid if you fail. It is, after all, just a videogame...

  • As a player with 5k hours? Run sole survivor or left behind every game. That's literally the best tip I can give.

Or be prepared to play lots of unwinnable games due to DCs, bad teams, busted killers, busted killer addons, and more.

Don't bother going for hook saves, sit on the gens. Solo Q teammates are always greedy for unhooks and it risks you getting caught.

If you are in a position to let your entire team die, take it. They were bad enough to all go down at the same time anyways.

  • I agree that it is very important and underrated to try to prevent the killer from getting any survivors to second hook. Taking protection hits not only gives a lot of points but its usually almost risk free as the killer usually doesn't ever switch to chase you instead of the person they are trying to tunnel. Many times it will help the other survivor lose the killer.

  • Always run Bond or Empathy. If you wanna get really crazy, run Bond+Open Handed. Information is your friend. If you see somebody gettin chased on the other side of the map you know you're safe to sit on that gen. For the love of the Entity, sit on that damn gen!!!!

    Ooh...okay.

    1. Beware, a smart killer will instantly drop the carried survivor and chase you. Only sabo hooks when it'll force an escape drop, otherwise you can lose the game there and then.
    2. Yes. But also beware trying to instasave - you're asking to be grabbed. Don't follow the killer like a puppy, we can hear you.
    3. Sure...within reason. Beware doing this if nobody has a medkit or CoH.
    4. Yes.
    5. Yes...but this is one you'll need to get a feel for.
    6. See above.
    7. Unfortunately, you'll need to learn the grab dance. Dammit I wish they'd remove hook grabs.

    I'd say.

    1. If you're solo, make sure you run at least one perk to let you know what's happening to teammates. I like Empathy, some people like Bond. If someone is being chased, do gens. If nobody is being chased, beware.
    2. Don't try to get fancy. Learn the fundamentals first. I get far too many easy wins against even somewhat experienced folks because they wanted to show off with a fancy tech or flashlight save.
    3. Run at least one Exhaustion perk. Dead Hard is good, but starting out, Sprint Burst and Lithe are a bit easier initially.
    4. Windows of Opportunity, if you can get it, is incredible when you're starting out and honestly pretty damn excellent all round.
    5. Try to split up on gens, unless someone has Prove Thyself. This makes it easier to work while someone is being chased.
    6. Play killer a bit! You'll get a feel for some important things, especially FOV and instinctive initial patrol paths.
    7. The main structure on most maps has a good amount of safety. If in doubt, head there.

Why would you bother playing if you're telling them to just sit on gens?

Because that is optimal survivor gameplay. Hiding and doing gens. It hasn't changed since release. Back then it was just more blatantly the optimal strategy because 95% of the games were against nurse.

If you want to go there, the strategy in DBD tournaments (lol) is for everyone to hide immediately upon hearing the terror radius and only start moving around quickly once the first survivor is in chase.

If the killer comes to your gen, and finds you right away, then you are looping right away. Looping means burning resources, even if you are doing it well. A better outcome is they never find you at all, waste a bunch of time, and have to go to another gen. Then those pallets are still there later on

You can argue that's boring, but that's not what I am discussing here. I am talking about how to win. Plenty of killers are so OP that it's a death sentence for them to even catch a glimpse of you. Especially in solo Q where you are liable to die on first hook even with your entire team alive

  • I wouldnt advise anyone playing solo survivor to do any saboing. It's too inconsistant and you waste too much time. It can be really strong in SWFs but that's about it.
