Why is there so few original killers

I dont mean original in terms of licensed or not. I mean how interesting/unique a killer plays.

And well it didnt bother me too much but after seeing what they are capable of with Wesker im really let down with most killers.

IMO the only interesting killers in their roster of 30? are Wesker, twins, nurse, blight and maybe Huntress and billy.

Why do the majority of killers even exist? Whats the point of an insanely boring killer like Freddy? Oh he can put down some snares on the ground that slow survivors down by 1.5% and he can sometimes fake a teleport. Woop de doo! How exciting.

Oh but snares arent all we got we also have trapper, he is super original, this guy can put down traps that trap survivors if they arent careful. And we have Hag this gal can put down traps and teleport to them if survivors arent careful!

And dont get me started on Dredge whom i consider a Sadako rework more than an actual killer in its own right.

Why is the roster this unorignal and boring?

  • The engine seems very limiting.

  • Because bhvr are held back by creativity and technical limitations. Not sure which is the bigger problem.

  • I mean they already made blight, It's kinda hard to beat that in terms of gameplay for both sides. But I agree 85% of killers are boring or have something that feels unskillful to go against.

  • They previously said that the models they used for killers had to be humanoid for technical reasons.

Recent(ish) killers, such as The Artist, The Blight, and The Dredge have shown a bit more variety in appearance, but I'd lovebfpr them to try further: a spider-like killer, for instance.

  • The format is incredibly limited. There's not a whole lot they can do that they haven't already done.

  • Regarding the mechanics of the game, there are limits.

One of the ultimate limits is the nurse.

(Dredge is an attempt to take back the power of the nurse by limiting it to lockers)

Apart from that there are other limits, for example twins and blight are other limits which show that you cannot do certain things.

For example there are people here who dream of having a killer who can walk and jump from wall to wall, which is mechanically impossible.

Regarding Freddy, well, it's an attempt to do things differently while doing the same.

My regret is that his teleportation power is time-limited, when he should be able to teleport to the generators, even if they are finished.

My regret too is that you need an addon (this is a brown addon, but addon anyway) to change your snare into a palette.

While in my opinion he should choose as he wants (not both at the same time of course).

Regarding the fun of playing or battling these killers, you will notice that nemesis and wesker infection are the same (mechanically speaking to remove them, not the effect itself)

BHVR didn't want to put back the plague pool for wesker, and it was easier to take nemesis (and a bit of Legion, blight rush) to do wesker.

Since nurse, blight, twins, hag, trapper, there was really nothing new.

I'm waiting to see what they'll do for the next killer.

It may not be an original mechanic but we can expect that like PinHead, survivors will have a secondary objective related to power

We could for example make a killer knight who can put metal bars on the survivors who remain hindered as long as they don't remove the metal.

The killer would have another secondary power that allows him to summon a potentially controllable Creature, it would be like taking over the mechanic of Twin, I believe that knows how to propose a new killer.

  • Wesker, twins, nurse, blight and maybe Huntress and billy.

Wesker, blight, billy and nurse together as the unique killers? Don’t know about that. Stalking is pretty interesting and distinct to these, as well as stealth killers in general. Plague is also very unique compared to Huntress as a ranged killer.

Dredge darkness is sadly just passive sure, but still interesting in concept.

and yeah, they are kinda bound to the general gameplay flow of gens/hooks/chases with pallets and windows and los blockers. But I think considering this, the roster is pretty diversified in terms of gameplay (not viability)

    Hmm.

I'd say that there are a lot more idiosyncratic killers than you think.

    • Artist is incredibly original with her birds.
    • Plague is completely unique.
    • Hag plays differently to any other killer.
    • Dredge and Onryo share a bit of DNA, but Dredge is fantastic overall. He's got a lot of simple and easy to understand tricks, but you can do all sorts of cool stuff with his remnant.
    • Blight and Nurse actually both feel very one dimensional to me, compared to, say, Artist and Dredge.
    • Nemesis has a lot of unique quirks.
    • Myers may seem simple, but he's actually 3 different killers in one, informed by his addons. Ditto Demogorgon.

I could go on. However...it's like a fighting game. After a certain point, it's difficult to do something completely wacky because the game plays a certain way baseline.

You know fighting games actually have depth and interesting rosters right?

Yes, but what I'm saying is - there is a limitation to that depth based on the game.

Like...I main D'Vorah. But at the end of the day, there's not much difference between her and say, Jax. All that separates them are their moves and a few slightly different numbers.

  • I don't know why people keep comparing Dredge to Onryo, they're barely anything alike. Dredge is closer to Freddy than anything else.

Teleporting to tvs is very similar to teleporting to lockers and both can do it way more than freddy. Both have barely useful stealth mechanics and both have audio cues when they are stealthing, sadako with a lullaby and dredge by virtue of being loud af.

Sadako is missing dredges anti loop and dredge is missing sadakos condemn but both of those are kinda weak enough to barely matter so they are basically the same killer.

In any case releasing dredge after sadako was incredibly boring because of how similar they are.

  • I mean 2 things there's only so many powers people van make

Teleports super speed strength invisibility there's only a few things people can make

  • The longer the game goes on, the fewer original ideas there are to plumb. You notice how every killer released since Twins has some kind of unique status effect they inflict on the survivor? It's because mechanically, they're running out of different ways the killer can go about hitting you. There was plenty of new ground to tread back in 2017 and 2018, but now, most killers are going to end up feeling similar to already existing killers just because there's only so many things you can do within the game's limitations.

Like... flying, wall crawling, destroying environmental objects, turning survivors into killer minions - they're all cool ideas for killers, but they don't work with DBD's structure. Nurse is a fantastic example of what happens when you ignore game design and work outside the limits.

Also im convinced flying can be implemented in game as demonstrated by .... cheaters lol

You can absolutely implement flying. It'll just be unbalanced as hell and be overpowered or worthless depending on the map.

Yep, sure. The endless seething controversy since her release is totally an indication of fantastic design.

Nah she is great because i said so <3

  • That's literally your own opinion. You consider Twins interesting and I consider it one of the worst designed killers in the game. You find Trapper boring and some people put hundreds of hours into him.

I personally find most killers unique and while I'm not a fan of most of them it's good that variety exists.

  • Because there is only so many anti-loop mechanics you can come up with

You can consider twins worst designed or w/e but you have to concede that what they are not is basic. There is nothing unique about trapper.

And yeah i want there to be variety but apart from a number of killers that can be counted on two hands, the 30 killer roster is unoriginal af. It doesnt have to be. If they can make wesker why the hell is the rest of the killers so absolutely mind numbingly basic.

I have a hard time discerning what do you consider as "unique". The only thing unique about Twins is Victor which is basically a mini-Demogorgon anyway and can be looped in the same way other killers can.

And what exactly would be "unique" about Wesker? He's a killer with a dash (which previously killers already had) and an infection status effect (which previously killers also already had).
