we all know, but unless there's only 20K players left or less they won't do anything about it
While I agree MMR is a reason for some of the decrease it's certainly not the only reason.
A bunch of new games have come out, covid has settled down, cheater issue, CoH, Grind, new player retention being bad, burnout, etc.
The new chapter also wasn't very hyped up so it's unlikely to bring in a lot of new people.
Even if they removed MMR I don't think you'd see that number go up all that much and I feel that initial 11k loss was the majority of the MMR quitters. The rest of the losses I feel leaned more towards the above reasons.
If it actually worked properly it would be fine. The fact it gets thrown out the window after 5 mins (meaning a 5hrs player can and does get matched with 5k players) is where the problems arise
I agree, there are worse problems in the game right now, not only MMR.
I think a lot of people have an easier time blaming SBMM when SBMM is just bringing to light the balance issues in the game rather than itself being a problem.
Doesn't mean SBMM isn't without fault since kill/escape based MMR still has it's own problems, but if the game was better balanced at a high level I don't think there would be nearly as many complaints about it.
Yeah, SBMM is showing Game balance issues, the problem here is Behaviour ignoring that issues and wasting time developing new skins :)
Or it might just be regressing to the mean. Add in the prior months your chart is missing....
So there was a huge surge of people between April and July and the rest of the year appears to just be DbD regressing to its normal base.
Which is also bad.
That's basically zero new player retention.
Even worse, old players leaving, most of then Killers.
Behaviour decisions are making the Game omega easy for new players who choose play survivor side, giving them a lot of second chances instead of improving as players, and killers just can tunnel or Camp because the Game is unplayable going for 12 hooks or playing non meta builds, that is boring for Killers, run same perla every match if you don't want to be ridiculous, So they quit or swap survivor.
Why SBMM is reducing player count when it's not working at all?
I mean, what kind of weirdo stays in a game where your only choice is to wait 20minutes every match or get bullied by playing excessively weak side.
DbD hit an all-time high (on Steam) mid-way last year. As time has gone on, they've lost all of those gains (on Steam), with more leaving every day. This is in spite of a record number of Blood Hunt events, Daily Log In bonuses, free cosmetics, three different holiday events, two new killers, and an unprecedented number of promo codes.
The questionable way MMR works is certainly one reason. The questionable perks to have come out is another. The questionable killer nerfs is another still. The lack of meaningful response to long-term, ongoing player complains is yet another. The one-sided parade of bugged validation changes. The steady decline of uniqueness in killer powers. The NFT debacle. The muddled design messages. The ongoing plague of cheaters, bugs, and abusive player behavior/speech.
There's no ONE reason why DbD has been hemorrhaging players. SBMM definitely drove away plenty of people who were happy to have a game that very much was focused on a non-competitive, fun time. And while SBMM was SUPPOSED to just put like-skilled people together without changing the soul of the game, that's not what has happened. But changing or even removing SBMM won't fix things. No single change will fix things. There have been a lot of steps lately, and most of them seem to be moving away from solutions, instead of towards them.
I already quit the game. I still check on these forums from time to time, hopeful to see something that will encourage me to return. I haven't seen anything yet and that hope gets dimmer monthly.
