A keys purpose is to open locks. Without locks, keys wouldn't have a purpose.

They open the hatch.
Design-wise their original purpose was to be the opposite of the killer's mori.

It's to dissapoint new players when they bring their freshly found green key to a freshly found hatch.
I wish keys actually had a animation of you inserting it into the hatch
