I refuse to install Denuvo + Missing out on Rift that I paid for!

Like the title says… I refuse to install Denuvo on my machine because I'm not an unpaid guinea pig, just an occasional paying Pig player. I got hit with the request to install Denuvo last week. After doing my own research on it, I said NOPE to installing it (not trying to kill my computer for a game). Since then, I have missed out on playing DbD for a week, going on its second, while the rift is presumably still ticking down (I can't verify because I can't log in to check)?

I paid for access to the rift well over a month ago + the new DLC, before this "test" was implemented. However, BHVR has now cut me off from finishing or accessing paid content I purchased.

I play on Steam, my account is public, unlike some others I have no VAC bans, but also I am reading endless posts from the community on Steam, Reddit, and here about how unplayable the game is right now. Honestly, that doesn't make me trust BHVRs intentions or this test they say they are actively monitoring, while it crashes machines and pisses off other paying players.

If BHVR wants to test anti-cheating (which I'm all for real solutions since they won't do server-side checks) they can do so on their own time. Do it with their own Quality Control team + paid testing pool, with their own supplied PCs (that they can fix if something breaks).

As a paying customer I'd honestly like an actual timeline to know when this is going to be over? Why, so I know if I'm going to get back in time to finish grinding out the already slowed down rift, that I paid access to. Because at this point that access is being prevented by BHVR for a test they should be conducting on their own.

Shoutout to the "cross-play is right there" people who think that resolves the issue, it really doesn't.

  • It's not Anti-Piracy. It's Anti-Cheating. It's rather difficult to test an anti-cheating software internally, 'cause you don't know what hackers know and are capable of.

Well akshually you're right. Sorry, it's edited, just for you :)

That's an internal corporate issue they need to fix. I'm just not putting my PC at risk to do it. However, to everyone who chooses to, thank you for your service?

Mind you, I'm not a fan of Denuvo either. I'd much, much rather have server-sided checks. For that matter, I haven't launched the game at all since it went live, but I've not been playing much in the past year or so anyway.

The crashing is more common on Epic, afaik, which wasn't included in the trial. I couldn't say whether they spaghetti'd something that makes Epic users crash. It should be unrelated. But their track record on that front is… well.

  • just to clarify, behavior did not cut you off from having access to the game. you can freely access it at any time you want to. You are the one cutting yourself off from the game.

I play on epic and beyond sticky movement keys time to time, i havnt crashed or had any of the issues steam users have reported.

Yeah, I'm not a fan either, hence my post. I have launched the game, but only to see if BHVRs "test" is over so I can finish my paid Rift content.

I will admit that I purposefully decided to ignore the Steam vs Epic Cheat Store in this post, because I'm more upset at the negligence by the devs and denied access to paid content. I for one don't want to risk killing my PC to a notoriously bad anti-cheat that many people told them was a bad anti-cheat, but were ignored.

While this post focuses on access, it's hilarious common knowledge that the Epic Cheat Store is where most of the cheaters do come from, but BHVR is intent on never addressing that fact. I'm pretty sure they're scared of that AI-loving anti-Steam guy who owns it.

    Okay.

  • Switch to linux. Linux distros use contained environments to run games, so denuvo spyware can know everything they want about my container, but nothing about my pc or me.

I can recommend bazzite as an easy-to-use out of the box distro for gaming, if you don't wanna invest time into setup.

I'm not going to lie, this is actually an amazing comment… potential solution. I do have a secondary PC running Linux for game testing purposes, but I don't use it to game on because it's just not my main PC. However, I'm actually going to give your suggestion a shot because it's really sound! I'll do some research into Bazzite and look at adjusting my Wine/Proton mix.

Please accept my sincere thank you for the tip!

I switched to bazzite as my main gaming distro a while ago and i had no major issues with any game except league of legends.

For league of legends i use a whole separate machine in a guest network, because vanguard is even more invasive than denuvo. This is my only machine running Windows11 with a local account.

Everything major regarding personality, work or hobbies i shifted to linux completely.

EDIT: Only Riot Vanguard, EA Javelin and Activision Ricochet cause incompatibility with linux as far as i know. Any other anti-cheat, that causes issues with linux, is configured like this deliberatly.

  • Not a fan of the company as a whole, both the DRM and Anti-cheat. I avoid any game with their product bundled in. I'm hoping bhvr stops this trial after a week as I too want to finish the rift. Today would be 1 week since it started. ☹️

I also avoid anything that uses Denuvo as it's pretty intrusive and heinous on computer hardware. I too hope BHVR figures out what they're actually trying to do other than whatever this is supposed to be. Each update just seems to be loaded with some sort of weird disappointment that seems out of touch with the playerbase, and not in a productive way.

Either way, my forced DbD break is about to be extended. A new update is about to drop for a game I super enjoy playing. So while the devs and corpos continue ignoring the many threads and open tickets asking them what they're doing, I'll be chilling elsewhere. I hope everyone gets back in soon, and BHVR makes this right, because right now it's dead wrong.

  • I didn't love this trial either. I felt very cautious going in and figured I would hold back for a few days and see if people were reporting problems before deciding whether to install. And then people were reporting the exact problems I was afraid of, so I took a break for a week before logging back in. I think there's still time to get the rift knocked out, but I don't love the practice of testing it live like this.

I get the argument that, if you're testing whether the software prevents cheating, it's hard to do that otherwise, but IMO there's a preliminary step which is testing whether it destabilizes the game or breaks people's computers or can't get uninstalled properly, etc. I would have rather that had happened on PTB or something. I would also rather not be asked to install the most intrusive possible version of something just to try it out.

But, like I said, for me so far the alternative is just "don't play the game during testing week" and that was okay. But it also would have been nice to get a clearer flag on when testing week was over and it was safe to launch the game again.

Test week is going a bit too long.

An open test like this can only be for performance. I do not know how bhvr could expect to catch cheaters by announcing a trial and thinking cheaters aren't going to run the Epic version instead. Mixed with the supposive engine update, we cannot be certain how the trial is going when we are dealing with multiple changes at once.

Two weeks and going for me, for this little test. However, I agree with you wholeheartedly! This should have never gone live, especially when they also floated out that they did an engine update… because wow, talk about the weirdest time to stress test your game on live servers with an anti-cheat that is now just killing peoples computers.

  • I just hope they end this trial because I refuse to install Denuvo.
It's just bad and intrusive and proved to create more problems than it solves.

  • It ended today, I think.

It did, but that doesn't sadly end problems people are having with their PCs from this poorly thought out test. I feel sad for them, but I'm already playing a different game.

Did it actually? Omg please don't prank me rn.

  • I got an update, and i'm not on the PTB. So I'd assume so.
