Protection hits should be more consistent

Recently since I've honestly just been getting bored of playing normally in solo queue, I've been running this build in solo queue with Mettle of Man, Duty of Care, Empathy, and an interchangeable slot I haven't nailed down between Botany, Exultation, Overcome, and Built to Last. I'm sure you can get the concept of the build, basically I spend half the game taking body blocks for my teammates. There are a lot of killers it doesn't work on, but it's a different way to play the game and I've been enjoying it.

However, over time it's been more and more apparent to me how inconsistent it is to get protection hits. I have been within a few meters from 2 different injured survivors, all 3 of us in chase, taken a hit, and still didn't get credit. About a third of my protection hits just don't count at all. Whenever this happens, of course, it means Duty of Care is useless, and Mettle of Man, which is already pretty difficult to activate as it is, doesn't get a charge. I have no idea what the issue is here but I'd really like to see it fixed, it only impacts a handful of perks in the game but they're already incredibly niche as it is.

(Side note, while running this build I realized that Mettle of Man still on occasion works with only 2 hits for some reason, that should definitely be fixed)

  • The game counts it as a bodyblock when boths survivors are in chase and one is getting hit (I am pretty sure that how it works), the key part is both are in chase so that's why it didn't work for you.

Like I said in my post, and this is just one example, I was in chase with two injured survivors just a couple meters in front of me also in chase, and it didn't count. There have been many instances like this. Also, according to everything I can find online, chase has nothing to do with it. All it is is whether there is an injured survivor within 10m of you, and there have been many times that that has been true and I haven't received credit for a protection hit.

I've noticed this too - it makes running Protection Hit builds quite challenging. However it is probably best to clip moments this happens and report them on BetaHub.

Yeah you need to report them and provide the logs of the match if you run into this kind of thing. They can't fix something they don't know is going on or have a logs where they see what is going on.

    Its within 4m not 10m ๐Ÿ‘€

  • Really? Everywhere online says 10m, did it change at some point? I mean it makes sense because 10m seems a bit too generous, but honestly with the amount of times I haven't gotten credit for a protection hit I'd really appreciate it being increased to 5-6m, these perks are already niche as it is

I think Mandy refers to the absolute for a protection hits? The game counts many factors in for protection hits to avoid unintended protection hits. A simple example, if the killer is chasing an injured survivor and you are right behind the injured survivor and infront of the killer, the taken M1 hit will count as a protection hit as long as it happens within 10meters.

However, it is not often that simple: Not every M2 counts as a protection hit, some maps have a lot of obsticals/line of sight blockers, and there is also always the possible that the killer hits you even though, you are not bodyblocking

    • Getting hit by Pyramid Head's M2 does not count as a protection hit, even when it happens in the first example.
    • Many maps have a lot of line of sight blockers or multiple elevations (Midwich or the Game). For example, if the killer hits you while another survivor is nearby, it will only count as a protection hit, if you are both within 4meters. Otherwise, you could get a lot of unintended protection hits if the range were 10meters - there is always the possible that an injured survivor is just nearby but not chased by a killer. It doesn't even has to be on an indoor map.
    • For example, You play against Plague and she is in her power mode, chasing your teammate while you are working on a generator nearby. Plague could use her puke to snipe you on a generator and get the hit. Usually Plague's red puke counts as a protection hit but since she hit you in a different area (even if it was within 10 or even 4meters), it will not count as a protection hit since you were neither corossing the survivor nor killer path.
    • lastly, taking a protection hit is server-sided which means even when you did everything right for a protection hit, there might be the possibility that the servers does not count it as a protection hit for some reason.

At least that is my understanding of protection hits but take it with a grain of salt since only Mandy can tell us what she means and what is true or wrong.

  • Certain special attacks also fail to trigger protection hits. Forget which killer it was but I took a protection hit with duty of care the other day and it didn't activate. I think it was Jason but not 100% sure. All I remember is the perk just didn't work because it wasn't an m1 and so I decided to just use a meta perk instead of some off meta mid perk that may not even work in the situation its supposed to be useful for

Yeah was probably Jason, I think his projectile just doesn't trigger protection hits at all.

Although it probably should? Meat-shielding someone who's injured against Jason is actually really annoying for them to deal with.

  • As a Duty of Care enjoyer now the perk works fine. But long time it was bugged where it only triggered on basic attacks nad not all the time. Now it works as intended, same with mettle of man.

I've experienced this issue with many killers, maybe once it was Jason but most times it was an m1. I guess that's just because the survivor was just out of 4m, I wish it was a bit more forgiving because it happens very often
