What chances do we have for a spider as a original chapter?

Or perhaps a licensed spider chapter. Is there a possibility for a arachnid chapter and what would its abilities look like?

  • I feel like the only thing holding them back is a lot of people have arachnaphobia. Heck a lot of people can't handle Plague because of her vomit. Im sure a spider killer would also have a lot of technical hurdles with movement. All this to say it's not impossible but unlikely

They also have Clown in the game as well, and many people have coulrophobia too. I don't think DBD is necessarily super concerned about phobias, although I feel like it would be nice to implement options for phobias when possible similar to Grounded's arachnophobia option. That would be possible for a spider killer, or the clown, although I don't think it would be possible with the Plague.

they recently stated that this would not be a reason for them to not create such a Killer (but that at that Point a Spider Killer also wasnt in the works/planned) - thats been a year or so ago?

so.. its possible that one is coming eventually. I would say it’s just a matter of time. Its obviously one of the Most Common requested and still missing Killer-types(?)

imo, having an option for arachnophobia (and possibly also for other phobias) that would Client-sided show specific, non-triggering skins and such shoudlnt be too hard to implement.. but apparently BHVR is (or was at that Point) against it. And well, fair enough if it totally goes against their own vision of their game..

funnily enough there was a very early dev interview or something where they (iirc it was Cote) stated they would very likely never release a Clown Killer because coulrophobia was so Common and… well. That Statement didnt age that well.

So, cant take their word on such statements too strictly as they also may go back on their words (and rightly so - otherwise there would also be less room for improvements and positive evolution of the game)

  • Evolve:

Adds Gorgon (Spider-Like Monster), 3 months later, Game is dead.

    The Last Year:

Adds the Fiend (big ass spider), less than 1 month later, Game dies.

I know it's not much of a sample, but the pattern is clear:

    Spider Adversaries Kill Asymmetrical Games!

Mcote did say that, but in the context that BHVR fully wanted to do a Clown chapter but was told no because Starbreeze thought a fear of clowns would drive away some players.

After BHVR bought complete creative control of DBD, the first Chapter they made was Curtain Call, which added Clown with the perk Coulrophobia.

I understand that was an instance of BHVR saying one thing and then immediately doing the exact opposite, but they basically got forced into their original stance and changed gears when they got handed the steering wheel.

ah thats interesting, do you have the source? Haven’t been around before Clowns release so i only really know about what others have said about it.

But it still stands that such statements are not meant as 100 percent future proof, which as i said can also be a very good thing! I would prefer more transparency about these kinda decisions like the reasoning you have given, interesting that they did such detailed explanations including another party back then, seems like the Community communication were on another Level then

I know it's a joke, but I still have to say… you forgot to mention that was only the second of the four times (or was it just three?) Last Year died. 😂

Seriously, as unsuccessful most Asymmetrical games have been, I don't think I've ever seen a game die so many times. They would bring the game back with all the bugs from last time, make the same mistakes and the game would die again and again.

Sorry, I can't find the original quote where it was said Starbreeze specifically was the one against a clown killer, it's scattered across the years of interviews and trivia in my recollection.

I've been invested in the game since seeing YouTubers play the beta, so I remember how odd the switch up from "we wouldn't want to alienate our audience" to naming a mechanic after Coulrophobia was.

I can definitively say that BHVR bought the publishing rights to DBD in March 2018, and Curtain Call followed shortly after in June of that year, so at least timing wise things seem to match how I remember them.

Ah sadge, don’t worry, i also didn’t have any source for the initial statement in the first place, so.. it does sound likes good reason, i just wish we would get more behind the scenes takes like this for nowadays decisions

All joking aside… honestly If they Were to add a "Spider Killer", I came up with one way back in 2017, and recently updated it. Since OP wanted to know what the Abilities would be like, I went for something unique, and well, Here is the summary:

    The Jorōgumo (Japanese Spider-Lady Demon)

Appearance: Floating Beautiful Japanese woman in a long kimono with long sleeves covering her hands.

    MS: 4.4 m/s

    TR: 32/40

Weapon: Shiny black Spider Claws concealed within her sleeves.

    Abilities:

Hidden Horror: (Passive)Her True spider form (the legs and large abdomen) are invisible like Wraith's cloaked appearance until she attacks or enters chase, then they become visible. Her Horror form disappears again after 20 seconds not chasing, attacking or injuring survivors. She Becomes Undetectable (no TR, can't be aura Revealed) while Horror form is cloaked.

Wall Crawler: (Passive) Low obstacles such as pallets, or mid height walls/objects (think most "trash Loops") in the environment can be crawled up onto or over at the cost of 6% movement speed. However, she can't climb high/Line of sight blocking walls or vault framed windows due to how large her spider abdomen is (I figured since this ability makes most "trash loops" obsolete, survivors needed a "window" of safety).

Venomous: (Passive) On top of injury, Each basic attack also applies 5 charges of the Poisoned status.

Poisoned: (Status) Any survivor receiving more than 20 charges of Poisoned loses a health state. Charges deplete at a rate of 1c/s when walking or still and .25 c/s when running or interacting.

Spiderling Swarm: Every time a survivor is hooked the Jorōgumo earns an Egg Sack token (Max of 3). She may hold down the Ability button for 6 seconds to lay an egg sack on any low horizontal or vertical surface (max of 4 on the grounds at a time). The Egg Sack gestates for 45 seconds before hatching, once hatched, spiderlings swarm a 24 meter radius at a rate of 1m/s, once they reach full radius in 24 seconds, they linger in their territory for an additional 125 seconds before dispersing and leaving the grounds. The Jorōgumo Spiderlings are highly territorial, so they will make up to a 16m gap between swarmed territories if you set any egg sacks too close together, so lay your sacks carefully.

Any survivor who enters the spiderlings swarmed territory receives the Poisoned status that builds in charges at a rate of 2 c/s. Poisoned Status charges do not deplete until the survivor is out of a spiderling swarmed territory for 5 seconds, at which point they deplete at the normal rate. The webbing the spiderlings lay down apply a 5% hindered status to survivors for as long as they remain in the spiderling swarmed territory. Survivors in the dying state in spiderling swarmed territory have their aura revealed for as long as they remain in the territory.

    Mothers Rage:

Egg sacks laid in the grounds can be Squashed by survivors. Doing so applies 10 Poison charges to the survivor, and if already hatched, causes the spiderling swarm disperse within 5 seconds. However, this action also puts the Jorōgumo into an Enraged state for 45 seconds. While Enraged Her True form is revealed, TR increases by 8m, Movement speed is increased by 7%, and Her wall Crawling ability suffers no cost in movement speed. The Survivor who squashed the egg sack has their aura revealed for 15 seconds.

    Perks:

    Hex: Ley Lines

All Dull and Hexed totems in the trial grounds are connected by thin invisible lines you can see highlighted in yellow. Any survivor who passes through one of these lines has their aura revealed for 1/2/3 seconds. Any totem cleansed or blessed loses all lines connected to it. All ley lines are removed if Hex: Ley Lines is cleansed.

    Welcome to my Parlor:

When 2 or more Healthy survivors are within 8/12/16 meters of you, Welcome to my Parlor activates and they become exposed for 15 seconds. Cooldown is 40 seconds.

    Scourge Hook: Web of Pain:

Each Hook you gain earns Web of Pain a token (max of 8), Each token Raises all survivors Pained Grunting Volume, and Bleeding Frequency (blood spot spawning rate) by 2/3/4%. A survivors Normal Breathing is raised in Volume 25% for the rest of the trial after the first time they are unhooked from a Scourge Hook.

Basically, She's sneaky when not attacking, chasing, or enraged, and is primarily designed to create zones of the map that survivors want to avoid but can take a risk to remove. I figured a killer that can create Territories in its favor would be very different from anything currently in the game. It has plenty of counter play, but I worry that I may have been too lenient in that regard, still, a survivor wouldn't want to be caught in a spiderling territory with Mama on their tail, it'd practically be a insta down, depending on how long they remain in the territory, and whether or not she hits them. The perks might be a Tad bit OP, but considering how survivors perks vs. killer perks have been recently, I don't think it will be a problem… Anyways, what do you think?

  • This content has been removed.
  • I can see it happening… just look at the Artist and her backstory (it is kinda sad though)

I imagine a person (most likely Female) raising spiders when a group of people come to steal things (Remaining SFW) and she ends up losing her legs and the spiders get out and kill the intruders

    Something like that

Oh and one of her should be Arachnophobia… LOL

  • They could put an arachnophobia setting when adding the spider killer. I've seen in World of Warcraft they had a toggle to change every spider in the entire game, into crabs.

But aside from the phobia thing. Bhvr tries not to go with something basic that alredy exists. Hence the killers being "original" so i doubt we would ever see just a "giant spider" killer. It would have to be something more unique, or a license. So more likely the spider lady ideas^ which would skip the confusion on how or why they would carry people to hooks.

Wouldn't be hard with plague. Just remove her sound effects and change the colour and texture of her vomit to something less triggering. Like perhaps liquid fire.

  • We really need a 8-legged spider. If you know Warframe, they added a spider frame a year ago but because it's Canada (Notorious for censoring and supporting certain groups I am not allowed to mention), according to the devs, they thought it was a good idea to implement a spider with only 4 legs to reduce 'arachnophobia' triggers.

It makes no sense. People are being taught the wrong thing. That's how people still don't know the difference between poison and venom.

  • Regarding the phobias:

Yes, there are people who are afraid of Clowns or cannot stand vomit noises. But compared to people who start panicking because of spiders their phobias are rather rare no?

So the phobia issue with spiders might really be a problem. I would bet that arachnophobia is one of the most common and widespread phobias in the world.

But even worse in my opinion:

How do you want to make maps work with a spider killer? Spiders are meant to crawl around on walls, ceilings and whatever. And looking at the state of maps in this game (where Bubbas run into air and start a tantrum and Demogorgons and Hillbillys - or Victors - cannot catapult themselves due to invisible walls - and those are just a few examples) I see no way to implement this in a decent way. The killer would not work or every map would have to be completely reworked.

UNLESS you make some Spiderman guy who works with webs and less with crawling around (similar to Ghoul). But that wouldn't be a spider then, would it.

  • regarding their official statements there is this tweet indicating they will take Community feedback into consideration

    https://twitter.com/deadbydaylight/status/1929981039423709287?s=46

Little later i think there was an interview with Cote, where he said this (See the Reddit link which summarizes the interview):

-Mathieu comments on the Arachnophobia Accessibility option due to the Jorogumo being brough up. He says he’s not sure if it’d come, but at the same time says it’s a possibility and is a topic they also had when introducing The Clown.

-Mathieu says that at the end of the day what they’re making it’s a horror game, so the goal is to scare you. He apologizes but says that if perhaps you don’t like being scared you should play smth else.

-He says general accessibility options such as colour blindness are obviously necessary, but he doesn't know if they would cater to specific fears such as arachnophobia.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/deadbydaylight/comments/1l912ft/new_very_long_translated_mcote_interview_just/

[so basically he doesnt understand the difference between a phobia and just regular fears- but its also just his paraphrased statement and there were often instances of BHVR statements that lead to the complete opposite being implemented a few months later so..]

arachnophobia is very Common compared to other phobias but keep in mind that its also different for every person, some of the affected are very much able to handle spiders in videogames/Visual Media just fine. Also, many people just misuse the word and claim to have arachnophobia when in reality they just find spiders creepy and thats it..

regarding the Model, there were other Games that already implemented it iirc. Also we have a depiction of possible Spider Killers in the tomes already that could work:

    IMG_0689.jpeg

Crawling around walls is also something they might just not implement but it doesnt hinder the inclusion, we also got Xenomorph and plenty of people used the exact Same Argument against it

also the Judgement has some crawly Running animation - i do wonder if that is triggering for some people already… and isnt that Model also wider than usual?
