Killers who use BBQ?

What do you do if you hook someone in the centre of the map and you only see the aura of one person working on a gen? On DennisReeps BBQ is still one of the best rated killer perks so I wanted to try it on Wesker but last game the survivors kept going down in the centre of the map and because the range is 40m I'd either see no one or just one person working on a gen. Should I have camped? Maybe I should have checked the gens closest to the hook but the problem was there was 1 gen 30m east of the hook and another 30m west so by the time I got to one of them someone else could get a safe hook save. Idk I'm starting to think maybe BBQ isn't good any more because the 40m range is too far. Like if you hook someone in the middle of any map that means survivors in 80% of the maps area won't be revealed basically.

  • One option might be that you could combine it with Infectious Fright so you catch people either way. 40m+ you have the aura, and less than that, people scream, which with Wesker is easy to find them.

  • Bah, edit is broken so apologies for the double post, but yeah this the trade off with BBQ. Alternatively, Friends 'til the End is pretty solid for this situation, and Alien Instinct is also pretty sound if you can keep people injured.

Another alternative is to take Thrilling Tremors, which will highlight gens not being worked on when you pick people up, so by proxy you can see gens where people are, regardless of distance. This also has the benefit of that info cannot be blocked from you.

There will never be a Swiss army knife for EVERY scenario, but there are some pretty good options.

  • 70 seconds is too much to camp it - you do this only if they took their time for last second unhook.

If there is just one aura and it's really far away, you just 50/50 the close gens tbh ;p

nowhere to hide might be better than bbq ;p I only use bbq on very mobile killers like freddie, dredge ;p

  • So, the killer is the only reason survivors have to do anything other than gens. If you see someone on a gen, going after then means that gens progress stops. So going and pressuring them means gen progress slows down automatically, and you are already pursuing your next hook.

by the time I got to one of them someone else could get a safe hook save

So, this, to me, is looking at this backwards (and I feel a lot of killers do this). Let them unhook. You already know that a survivor is going to have to leave a gen and unhook, and you really don't have to be there to monitor that.

The reason this is backwards is that you shouldn't care one bit about a "free unhook" because that's the whole reason that chases are pressure. This is one person in time out on hook and another is forced to come rescue. That's just how it works.

The real question here, is why should the survivor get "free gen progress" because you're waiting at a hook, supervising a survivor who already can't work on gens, or waiting around for a second survivor who also isn't doing gens.

Camping here, especially when you have another survivors location, just means they can do gens "for free" while you do effectively nothing near a hook.

Instead, if you go chase, you automatically punish if they try to "greed" by waiting to unhook, and can possibly even have two survivors hooked at the same time (which, is a scenario that either forces then to stop all gen progress entirely or basically snowballs you into winning right there).

Also, 30m is less than 8 seconds travel, assuming you simply walk and aren't in a killer with any kind of travel ability. Less, since you can hear gens being worked on, and, since you also just finished a chase nearby, should have seen either a gen with progress, a survivor who was working a gen, or scratch marks.

I know you're right about camping being a waste of time usually the only problem is if I go looking for survivors 50m from the hook, can't find anyone and they get a free save and disappear - that's tantamount to losing the game

  • BBQ hugely overrated on killers without great mobility. Wesker doesn't have good teleports, so I’m up to claiming bbq on him isn't great option.

If u like run exactly him as killer, nowhere to hide, friends till the end and even eruption brings more value

No, not really. The thing is, hooking someone does not mean that this person has to die on their first Hook. This is not the way the game is meant to be played, if Survivors should not be unhooked and dead on their first Hook, the game would have to be massively different.

The reason you hook a Survivor is to increase your Map Pressure - hooking a Survivor means that at least two Survivors will not be on Gen at this point. One is on the Hook and one needs to get this Survivor. Ideally you are in a chase, which makes 3 Survivors not on Gens. So even if you only see a Survivor in the distance, you should approach them to have those 3 Survivors not on Gens. However, you have to play a Killer who can actually get there quickly, which is why BBQ is not good on any Killer, e.g. you will not really have much success with BBQ on a non-mobility M1-Killer.

If you decide to linger around next to the Hook, this might work out against inexperienced teams, because those tend to stick around the Hook because they somehow think if the Killer was camping for 60 seconds they will totally stop camping the last 10 seconds of the Hook Stage. But once you go against more experienced teams, they will just have 3 people on Gens and you will lose the game.

  • And about the actual BBQ value… I noticed that extremely experienced players don’t blindly run to the guy they only see at the BBQ.

    1. How long person probably worked on this gene? If at least about 30-40 seconds, and this gen isn’t important don’t waste your time.
    2. If u see only one guy, other two probably nearby. Use some deduction method or intuition for finding survs nearby if hooking them more relevant. U can prevent safe rescue in some cases.
    3. Even if u didn't chase someone because of BBQ, it still provides good info. Example: u saw guy, but he is too far away on gen. But later, when u won chase nearby this place and gen still didn't pop, 100% the survivor is nearby and still working on it. U can get a snowball value from short slug, and chasing perks on gen to pause their progress there.
    4. Maybe u can be acknowledged about distortion, or person knows how to counter bbq. Some info about opponent level in game + their build

50m from the hook is your BBQ range you said. So you know there's a survivor there.

I'm not sure why this suddenly switches to you not being able to find anyone, from "I can see someone working on a gen with BBQ" in the original post.

Oh, BBQ has withstood the passage of time to remain one of the fan favorites for a reason. Not seeing survivors from BBQ just informs you that they're either close by or in a locker; more of the former than latter. You could also try the optional perk Friends til the End which acts as a singular BBQ regardless of range and exposes the obsession. Information perks are very powerful tools in making impactful plays.

  • Consider also that some survivors are smart about BBQ. It's such a popualr perk that I just assume killers are using it (I often use it too). When I see someone is about to get hooked I either position myself behind the gen so the killer doesn't pick me up or, if I'm not on a gen, I go in a locker. BBQ is always on my mind as survivor.

I often run Nowhere to Hide when I run BBQ. Gives me extra range.

  • They dont need to be close sometimes if they are behind from the gen the generator aura covers theirs so you dont see them or they can be in locker but thats rare scenario mostly used by last survivor waiting for hatch. Depends on what map you play and what killer you play, if you have that mobility so you can go across the map or its important gen thats better to leave for later 3 gen if its like asylum main or saloon main I would let them get it these gen spots arent worthy to protect if you dont have killer with ability to do so like dracula or singularity, just go for the one you see or try to find someone near hook you would be surprised how many survivors position them selfs near hook and wait for unhook there wery close behind your back.

  • if you want bbq value you might have to hook away from the center.

  • let’s see what would I do if I only see one aura with bbq after hooking someone:

First I would ask myself is this a gen I care gets done on the one aura? If yes then go to the aura. If no then I would go check somewhere else especially if it’s not a gen I care about or could find advantageous to losing I guess.

If I find someone else while looking at other gens great. If not then I guess I’ll go snoop around the area where the person was hooked, or then make my way to the gen with the aura. It really depends.

That would probably be my general flow thought state though if I were using bbq.
