Match Surrender System: Close, but you're missing the biggest frustration with slugging

👋🏼Hi again, let's talk about Match Surrender!

⌚First, I want to say I've waited ages for slugging to really be addressed and I KNOW it's such a hard thing to tackle.

📃However, you mention that you're targeting the biggest slugging scenarios and keeping your eyes open for other offenders. The thing is, you've missed the worst one of all - slugging for the 4k.

😣I have around 9k hours in DBD and I can say WITHOUT A DOUBT, the number 1 thing that makes me want to turn off the game is being repeatedly slugged for the 4k. The release of the Final Mori has exacerbated the extreme slugs for the 4k, since people that didn't used to do it will do it now for the mori animation. Sometimes I'll have 4 or 5 games in a row, often almost bled out, just so they can make sure they get their mori.

🩸The original hatch changes were meant to solve a lot of things, but one thing mentioned was deterring slugging for the 4k, since both survivor and killer would have no idea where the hatch is when it spawns. Unfortunately, we've seen that in the DBD community, people thirst for the 4k so much that it doesn't matter, they'll still slug you for ages, because there is a small chance the 4th survivor gets hatch.

💡Below is my suggestion for something that desperately needs to be added to the Match Surrender system, or it won't solve one of the top 3 most miserable things you experience in DBD.

When only two survivors remain and one is in the dying state, the slugged Survivor can Surrender without a disconnection penalty leaving a bot in their place for 30 seconds, so the killer is able to avoid tactics like disconnecting for hatch at shack.

🎯My suggestion is aimed at making it so it's fair for the killer and avoids insta-surrender for hatch. I feel 30 seconds - 1 minute max of the bot being in the game is more than enough time for the killer to decide how the match ends. While I realize some people might think it's silly that the bot isn't permanent, I'm simply trying to create a fail safe. As noted above with hatch changes, and slugging for the 4k, we've seen that the DBD community will do whatever it takes to win (we remember hatch stand offs) and the idea behind this is simply to avoid people juggling a bot until they can locate the 4th survivor.

🙏🏼Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I really hope it's on your radar, because this scenario is genuinely the one thing in this game that ruins it for me.

  • Say it louder please, BHVR didn't realize that the Finisher mori would create issues and make Mori animations a chore that people no longer look forward to.

IIt would be so easy to make the Finisher Mori a healthy thing though...

  • Finisher Mori is not the problem I'm afraid, it's the slugging for it that is. The problem is it's hard to distinguish between a genuine example of that, and just normal Killer play when you find two Survivors in a bad spot. I do agree that we need to be able to let the Survivor surrender without penalty if this happens, leaving a bot in place if so. I think it's a sensible change but the issue is 100% not the fact Finisher Mori exists, it's how some Killers try to get the Finisher Mori.

People don't mind the Finisher Mori per-say. Before this, Mori animations were liked (or at least tolerated) but now, with them happening in most matches, it got old really quick and now they're merely seen as "additional reason why the game won't end" instead of a cool cutscene that didn't happen often.

By hiding a Mori animation behind a 4k no matter the means, it automatically incentivizes people to slug for the 4k...and we all know how fun and riveting it is. It's true that it happened often before already, the Finisher Mori didn't create it, but the sheer number of new threads talking about it since the Finisher Mori was introduced speaks for themselves of how it got worse.

We already hear it everywhere, Killers slugging the last 2 and then waiting for one to die (either by bleedout or simply standing over the last slug after hooking the 3rd, wasting minutes instead of ending the game in seconds even when there's hooks within spitting distance) just to Mori the last, is only making people hate those animations due to them encouraging such endgames and making the game even less casual/newcomer-friendly than it already is (as newcomers/low-mmr players will see their games end in a 4k more often).

There's a reason why the dreadful basekit Unbreakable was attempted alongside the previous Finisher Mori PTB: otherwise almost every single games would just end in a slugfest. Hell, during that PTB there were more bleedout slugfest games than normal even though people could get up because Killer players wanted that animation after killing the first 2 Survivors.

[Quite frankly, it wouldn't be that hard to keep the Finisher Mori but make it into something that rewards those that don't slug for the 4k and win the Hatch race without removing 4k slugging for those that merely want to secure the win: The Finisher Mori only becomes available if the last Survivor is on their feet (healthy or injured or Plot-Twisting, that last one is to prevent from trying to purposefully deny the Mori by using the perk right before the other dies) when the second-to-last Survivor dies by sacrifice, by unique Mori (NOT by bleedout) or escapes. Succeeding would grant extra BP for the extra steps.]

    (There's threads about similar solutions)

The goal isn't to remove things, it's to make things healthier. Slugging for the 4k was already a common thing, but it wasn't as prevalent and Mori animations weren't seen as a chore. This same mindset applies to countless aspects of the game but this one is currently making a big impact but could be turned into something good.

  • Slugging is really annoying, yeah, I proposed a few changes here:

    @Chiky said:

I get what the devs are trying to do, but it makes absolutely no sense the new effect (When a Survivor drops a pallet, if they move 6m away from it within 6s they gain 5% Hindered for 3/4/5s) is for knock out. What does pallets have anything to do with being knocked out? It's an absolute flavor fail. Even the flavor text and the new effect have no correlation:

The trauma caused by your brutal attacks makes crying for help painfully difficult.

Here are the first possible changes that came to mind that keep Knock Out's flavor without being too busted and still functional for a killer to run it:

    1. Easiest solution: Remove "blocks their Aura from being revealed to any Survivor, who is farther than 32/24/16 metres away from them."
    2. Putting a Survivor into the Dying State reduces their visibility drastically (basically like dredge's nightfall) and suffer from the Blindness and Oblivious status effect until they get fully healed.
    3. Putting a Survivor into the Dying State causes the survivor to suffer from a -10/-15/-20 % Hindered status effect and the Deafened and Exhausted status effect until they get fully healed.
    4. Putting a Survivor into the Dying State reduces their Crawling and Recovery speeds by -50/-75/-100 % for the next 15 seconds. Your Terror Radius transfers to that survivor until they recover from the dying state, and its radius is set to 32 metres.
    5. Putting a Survivor into the Dying State applies the following effect to that survivor: After being healed from or having recovered from the Dying State, you suffer from the Hindered status effect for 20/25/30 seconds.
    6. Putting a Survivor into the Dying State disables 1/2/3 of their perks at random until fully healed.
    7. Survivors in the dying state take 100/150/200 % more time to recover from the dying state.
    8. If you get stunned while carrying a survivor, that survivor is put into the dying state 5/4/3 seconds after that. Permanently increases the duration of Killer Blinds by any means and the duration of Pallet Stuns by +100 %.

These don't prevent the other survivors from finding the downed survivor, and give a bit of strategy to actually knocking down survivors.

Note that the effects are not just with basic attacks, so It's more flavorful.

I'd even press to have these perks and also have unbreakable/no mither recovery as base kit and Deerstalker as base kit.

Here would be the updated perks now that they would be base kit:

    Deerstalker base kit:

The Auras of all Survivors in the Dying State within 12 metres of your location are revealed to you.

    Deerstalker Perk:

The Auras of all Survivors in the Dying State are revealed to you an additional 20/28/36 metres.

    Unbreakable/No mither Base Kit

Allows you to fully recover from the Dying State.

Perks affected by the survivor base kit change:

    No Mither:
The following effects apply permanently during the Trial:
Suffer from the Broken Status Effect.
Suppresses the creation of Pools of Blood.
Reduces the volume of Grunts of Pain while either in the Injured or the Dying State by 25/50/75 %.
Blocks your Aura from being revealed to the killer until you fully recover from the dying state.
Increases your Recovery speed by 30/40/50 %.

    Unbreakable:
Once per game, you may press the Active Ability button to recover instantly from the Dying state and gain a +100 % Haste Status Effect for 3/4/5 seconds.

    Plot Twist:
While crouching and motionless, press the Active Ability button to silently enter the Dying State with the following benefits:
Blocks your Aura from being revealed to the killer until you fully recover from the dying state.
    Suppresses Grunts of Pain.
    Suppresses Pools of Blood.
Your Recovery speed is increased by 25/30/35 %.
After full recovery using Plot Twist, you are healed instantly and gain a +50 % Haste Status Effect for 2/3/4 seconds.
Plot Twist deactivates after recovering yourself by any means and reactivates once more once the Exit Gates are powered.

    Soul Guard:
After being healed from or having recovered from the Dying State, you benefit from the following effect:
Grants the Endurance Status Effect for 4/6/8 seconds.
Endurance is cancelled prematurely when performing a Conspicuous Action.
While suffering from the Cursed Status Effect, your Recovery speed is increased by 30/40/50 %.
Soul Guard has a cool-down of 30 seconds.

    Boon: Exponential
Press and hold the Active Ability button on a Dull or Hex Totem to bless it and create a Boon Totem.
Soft chimes ring out in a radius of 24 metres.
All Survivors benefit from the following effects when inside the Boon Totem's radius:
100/110/120 % bonus to the Recovery speed.
Recovering yourself from the dying state grants you a 15/20/25 % speed bonus in Altruistic Healing for 5/10/15 seconds.
Healing a survivor in the dying state to injured grants them a +50 % Haste Status Effect for 2/3/4 seconds.
Survivors can only be affected by one instance of Boon: Exponential at a time.

Feel free to also make these ideas into new perks as well… We're lacking interesting perks, and getting new General perks would be incredibly useful for the game.

(Edited because for som reason hitting the Left arrow key twice posts the post automatically???)

But yes, the main issue is killers trying desperately to get an easy 4K, that's wjat BHVR isnt addressing

  • Honestly, I don’t feel like they will fix it. I’m just trying to finish up my rift since I already paid for it, then putting the game down again. Don’t know if I’ll come back.

I’m not even sure I will finish this rift. I’m forcing myself to play to finish it and be done.

Past 3 games I played. We were all slugged for the 4K.

Finisher Mori has made it miserable for survivors.

I realize there probably won't be time to add it before release, but I desperately hope they realize just how big of a pain point this is.

one can definitely hope. If it’s done. I’ll stick around. Gonna keep up to date with it, in hopes it does.

I'm sorry but I have never once slugged for a 4k just to Mori someone, I'm not interested in slugging for 4ks and I don't think most Killer Players actually are incentivized like this.

If it's really an issue just allow the Killer to Mori any one person per round that is on death hook and add better antitunnel.

  • Agreed, agreed and agreed.

No offense, but just because YOU don't do it, doesn't mean it's not done.

I was slugged for the 4k a decent amount BEFORE the final mori was added, but AFTER it was added, it's MOST GAMES.

It has exacerbated the single worst part of the game for me.

Here's the thing friend: In my vast majority of time playing Survivor, Killers do not actually do this in my experience. Not on purpose anyway to be toxic or whatever. The worst I have seen is a slug and left to bleed because I crawled away and the Killer couldn't find me, I don't think every 4k slug is purposeful. It's still not most games EVEN WITH the Mori added for me, and when I do see it, it's VERY obvious. The Mori is 100% not the issue, the issue is that 4ks are incentivized as the "truest way to win" as Killer. That's an MMR and emblem system issue not a Mori issue.

Why are we even mad the Killer goes for a 4k this way anyway when the game literally tells them to go for the 4k and incentivizes it with the way the MMR system currently is?

  • You are assigning the fault for an issue where it doesn't exist. You can watch the Mori animation for free in the lobby. And slugging for the 4k existed long before the finisher mori. Odds are in 95% of cases the person who slugged you and then moried you would have slugged and hooked you otherwise, or just brought a Moro offering.

  • I'd just like to go on record, this is still the biggest slugging pain point in the game and I very much hope that you are looking into this being added to the anti-slug/abandon options.

I have been slugged for the 4k to almost bleed out or bled out so much since Ghoul came out that my play time has been cut in half, because it's so tilting.

I don't get tilted by much in this game. I don't consider most things toxic. I do however feel very drained after I not only had my 10th Kaneki in a row, but I'm also being slugged for the 4k in 8/10 matches.
