What if Dark Theory slowed killer?

Title. What if instead of increasing survivor movement speed it instead slowed killer movement speed. I feel that would make it slightly better since it would make some killers patrol a little bit slower and it would be easier for killer to actually know when Dark Theory is in play while still helping chase when it's in play

  • Uhh, Boons are already so Survivor-sided that the Killer loses if he snuffs and loses if he does not. Survivors don't lose anything by making boons.

No need to make it shaft the Killer even further. Dark Theory is fine as-is.

  • So on the game, macmillan or eyrie of crows I'm mandated to stomp the boon before I can chase in huge swathes of the map? I don't have time for that. No thank you.

Eh. Dark Theory isn't fine as it is. It's a very awkward effect to balance. Too slow and it's virtually worthless, too fast and it's broken, with no real middle ground.

This idea could actually be something that gives it a suitable middle ground. As long as the relative speed difference is the same (makes killers 2% slower), then it would A. get slightly more use out of it and B. make the killer more obviously aware of it's presence.

Then it wouldn't be a stealth speed boost that doesn't really do anything, it would be an obvious debuff that gives the killer a clear indication that it's in play, and thus the informed choice as to whether to snuff it or not, as well as giving a 'Whispers' style way to locate it.

I think it's actually a far more balanced form of the perk than it currently is, giving fairer pros and cons.

  • it won't affect strong killers like nurses, but m1 killers will suffer even more

Except your forgetting about time economy.

Survivors can boon a totem AND do gens. So they don't lose out when booning.

Killers, on the other hand, cannot Snuff and patrol. Or Snuff and chase. or do anything involving 2 actions. So, with your change, they would be slowed, have to slowly find the Boon, and then Snuff it. Or leave it and have Survivors drag them towards it in every chase. Lose/lose.

Plus, Survivors can re-boon forever. So even after they waste time snuffing; Survivors just re-boon, and Killer is slowed in that area again.

PLUS, what about multi-level maps? Killer gets slowed 1 floor down, has to find stairs, go up, re-enter the slow zone, find it, and snuff it.

No thanks. It's fine as is.

  • It also means that it would stack with other Haste Effects. Not sure if I'm a fan of that, especially for such a large AoE that can reach through walls.

Though Survivors should have some kind of effect on them to indicate when they have a Haste Effect.

I mean it would make it an actually useful Boon in a sense. It wouldn't be super strong at all I think you guys are over estimating what I mean. Nothing drastic just the 2% but instead of buffing survivor speed it slows the killer in the range

Ty! Yes I meant to keep it at 2% just swap effects. + It would help with the whole "I can never find boons!" Problem killers face while giving a good enough benefit to warrant survivors using it.

It is already useful. There's no reason to make it screw Killers just because YOU don't think it's useful.

I outlined why Boons are lose/lose anyways, and this would make the choice even worse.

Well BOONS aren't the problem, COH is. If COH is to get a nerf in the future to make it a balanced perk then that would mean every other boon beyond shadow step needs to be brought up in some way to make them worth using. Dark Theory as it stands provides a minimal effect with no information given to the killer its in play beyond "Oh I hear a boon." And something like movement speed should have something that shows its active. This kills two birds with one stone making the boon better so it could stand on its own feet while also giving good info to the killer

    Agree to disagree.

    1. Every boon does not have to be buffed if CoH is nerfed. That's false equivalency. The other boons are fine, b ut CoH is too strong.
    2. Again; Boons are lose/lose for the Killer no matter what. Either he wastes time snuffing, or he lets Survivors benefit. He should not have a sadistic boon that slows him down, thereby forcing him to stop and boon hunt every time Survivors squat on another totem.

You realise that speeding up survivors by 2%, and slowing down killers by 2%, is functionally identical in a chase right?

This would be a slight buff to application (use but not potency) with a big nerf to longevity (telling the killer when and where it is)

Again, I feel like you're HUGELY overestimating this effect. While yes it slows them down by 2%, that really wont be a huge difference in most chases where it doesn't currently and using your scenario (of survivors running back to it always) isn't it better how it currently is for that since they gain a movement speed bonus when they get close and get to keep it when they leave? Wanted to add, Dark Theory is the LEAST used boon in the game with a 0.32% pick rate with Exponential having a 1.9%, Shadow Step having a 2.57%, and COH having a 19.48% pick rate and there must be a reason behind it having such an extremely low pick rate.
