Broken Key Rework (The Hatch Solution)
TL;DR Below!
Admit it... The Hatch is a problem
The hatch has been in the game ever since day one. It gave us some many clutch and infuriating moments due to its mechanics. However, there's no doubting that the hatch is just flawed mechanic for the Death Efficiency Problem.Death Efficiency Problem:

What is the problem?
The hatch has only one problem, nothing else: It's a free escape "sometimes". Don't get your pitch forks and torches just yet, please, allow me to explain what I exactly mean. A survivor that has done nothing to contribute to the team's escape's efforts can just slip right by. That's what I mean by free escape because survivors don't really have to work for it.
Some Counterclaim Arguements:
"If they are able to be the sole survivor then they DID work for their escape"
Actually, you're sorta right but it really depends on what the survivor did since anyone can hide in a locker while their teammates does at least 2 generators. We need actual evidence of the survivor being worthy of the hatch which why I am suggesting a Broken Key Rework.
"Just find the survivor before they find the hatch"
This is really difficult as a killer unless you are using Spies or Whispers. Furthermore, if you do find the survivor, there is still that chance that the survivor could find the hatch during the chase. Basically... This doesn't work since you need the variables to line up perfectly for the killer.
The Broken Key Rework
The Broken Key item will only have two add-ons, these add-ons are only for the Broken Key ONLY:Key Head
Corrupted Metal
When you are the last survivor with at least two generators completed, the hatch will spawn but it will be closed. You'll need to craft a Dull Key to open the hatch, this is your objective.
New Endgame Machines:
If two generators haven't been repaired
-The survivor's repair speed will be set to 4 charges per/second.
Explanation: This encourages the survivor to at least get their minimum amount of generators repaired. With this increase, the survivor can repair generators start to finish in 20 seconds!
If two generators have been repaired
-The survivor's repair speed will be set to 2 charges per/second.
Explanation: This is to prevents rushing generators and encourage the survivor to instead craft the key. However, completing generators is still an option if the killer camps the hatch.
-Broken Key will spawn in the trial buried in the ground.
-Key Head will spawn in the trial buried in the ground.
-Corrupted Metal will spawn in the trial buried in the ground.
-The survivor can see the auras of where they are buried at.
Explanation: This will allow the survivor to be stealthy and find the items they need. This will be a test on whether or not they are worthy of the hatch since they will need remain undetected.
Once the survivor reaches a buried item
-They will have to spend 5 seconds digging in the dirt to reveal the item.
-They will have to pick it up like a regular dropped item.
Explanation: This adds more time to the stealth game since you have to wait for the killer to leave the area so you don't risk getting seen. More evidence of from you saying that you are worthy of the hatch since your skill is being tested even more.
Once the survivor gathers all 3 items
-They will have to spend 5 seconds crafting a Dull Key but you'll produce bright light during the process.
Explanation: Again, this adds more time to the stealth game since you have to wait for the killer to leave the area so you don't risk getting seen.
After the survivor crafts the Dull Key
-The Hatch's aura is revealed to the survivor.
-The Hatch takes 5 seconds to unlock and open.
-Once a survivor opens the hatch, they will immediately jump in.
Other Scenarios
-The killer can close the Hatch there's still survivors remaining in the trial. Example: 5 generators done with a survivor using a key to open the hatch.
Explanation: This prevents a "Hatch Standoff" if they just open it while the killer is standing nearby. They will need to make sure that they are safe when they open the hatch.
Stalemate Solution: Sanity
Being the last survivor causes you to go insane overtime. You'll need to make progress to give yourself hope and keep yourself from giving in.-You'll slowly reach tier 3 insanity overtime, reaching this will cause your aura to be revealed to the killer.
-Completing any action whether that be removing a RBT to finding the Broken Key will help you stay sane.
Explanation: This prevents survivors from doing absolutely nothing when they are the last survivor. Say goodbye to 30+ minute games due to hide and seek world championship!
Perk Reworks and Other Problems:
Left Behind can be changed to decrease how fast you gain insanity by x/y/z and you can see auras of the buried items at anytime. You can still bring a Broken Key into the trial normally like any other item since it can save time later.
Comments
Would key fragments be highlighted for the survivor and not for the killer?
Hell yeah. Thanks for the TL;DR section, I normally read long posts but I'm tired.
I'm good with this.
Explanation: This prevents a "Hatch Standoff" if they just open it while the killer is standing nearby. They will need to make sure that they are safe when they open the hatch. (This part is where i'm confused)
If you approach the hatch and unlock it with the key can the killer still grab you? What is to stop the killer from still camping the hatch?
You still have a repair speed increase so just rush the generators.
If two generators have been repaired
-The survivor's repair speed will be set to 2 charges per/second.
Explanation: This is to prevents rushing generators and encourage the survivor to instead craft the key. However, completing generators is still an option if the killer camps the hatch.
If you complete every generator, the killer will now have to worry about the hatch and the exit gates. The killer can only guard 1 of the 3 threats to prevent the survivor from escaping.
I like this. Any iteration of the hatch that removes hatch standoffs and accounts for stalemates, I'm all for.
I like this I had an idea just like this but yours has more effort, crafting the key instead of just finding it is cool. If you get caught you're screwed so don't get caught. The insanity is a nice touch as well
What is that you say? Reveal the survivor's aura once the hatch is closed? Yeah let's punish the survivor that may have done 2 gens on his own while his team keeps dying!
Oh my god, closing the hatch must be like the best idea ever! 😍
I dig this idea!
This is balanced and is good for both sides,
And praise from me to the shortening match from standoff preventipn ideas.
I hate it on both sides
Who cares if a survivor who hid in the locker the entire game gets the hatch?
He still de-pipped, and got what 8k bloodpoints tops?
It's not a big deal.
That's a nonsense idea. The killer has a huge advantage in closing the hatch, because he probably already found it just walking around the map. In most cases the killer will close the hatch first, making it a useless mechanic.
