The Hatch - Key Dilemma

The killer cannot close the hatch or else gives the survivor multiple means to escape (through doors, and hatch) assuming they have a key.

If the survivor is intent on escaping they won't reveal themselves but will hope the killer closes the hatch.

If the killer is intent on getting a 4k they won't close the hatch.

Therefore the game ends up basically being in limbo until one or the other gives up.

It just seems like such sloppy game design.

  • ...What?

    • If the Killer does not close the hatch: Survivors can escape. With or without a key.
    • If the Survivors have a key; They can reopen the closed hatch. If they don't; they can try the exit gates.
    • If they don't open the gates after the hatch is closed; End Game Collapse will kill them.

    So...where's the limbo part?

  • If the exit gates can be opened that means all the gens were done. In that case, it doesn't matter if the survivor has a key or not they can always get out the exit gates so close the hatch. If the gens were not done then the only viable escape in 99% of instances is the hatch. If you don't close the hatch the survivor can always leave through the hatch so you might as well close the hatch. The point of having a key is aura reading and/or opening the hatch; that's why the person is giving up med kit heals, faster gens or flashlight saves. It is literally what the item is designed for.

TLDR: Just close the hatch; there's no reason to leave it open other than giving a hatch escape to the last survivor.

if there are generators left to complete the game will be in limbo. i thought that would be obvious.

If the killer is camping the hatch indefinitely, the last survivor has ample time to repair the remaining generators.

I may be misunderstanding, so let me ask:

Is the hatch visible and open?

    If Yes:

    • Survivors can leave.
    • Killer can close it.

    If Not Visible:

    • Survivors HAVE to do gens, or they can be reported for not playing their objective.

    If Killer Closes It:

    • Survivor with key can open it.
    • Endgame collapse will kill Survivors after 4 minutes.
    • Generators can no longer be worked on.
    • Survivors must open exit gates.

If Survivors are refusing to do generators; They are breaking the rules. In every other scenario, they will either leave, or die.

    So...Where's the limbo?

Often there are multiple generators left to complete. The survivor with the key won't even attempt them and has the choice to be stubborn waiting for the killer to close the hatch to escape. If the killer refuses to close hatch it puts the game in limbo.

The killer is making the smart move in this case. If they know the survivor has a key, they would be stupid to leave or close the hatch.

The survivor, by your own words being "stubborn" is the one holding the game in limbo by refusing to repair the remaining gens.

Just because it's boring doesn't mean it's not an option.

If it's one more gen to repair, it's an easy way to force a three-exit scenario and make an easy escape. If there are multiple gens left to repair, then repairing one might pressure the killer away from the hatch. If it doesn't, repeat until either it does, or you power the exits.

But that means the hatch exists, and the key-user can just exit.

Which makes this that Survivor's fault: He's not taking the exit, and not progressing the gens.

So, how is a player refusing to play the game 'sloppy game design'? It's not like the developers can physically FORCE him to start doing his objective.

It's only that Survivor's fault for refusing his clear objectives.

  • This whole thread is a ridiculous argument.

Nobody ever brings keys anymore. Once in a blue moon.

Killers hardly camp hatch anymore, I haven’t seen it done it months.

Nah, you're being ridiculous. This is a massive flaw in a core aspect of the game that shouldn't be overlooked after the games been on the market for 6 years.

  • Hatch exists as a way to end the game if the last survivor is stealthing.

It's also a compensation for the fact that snowballs are so quick in this game. Survivor requires coordination but DbD provides none by itself. One mistake can make the game impossible to win for the survivors. Hatch is the last hope after a snowball makes it impossible to escape otherwise, but provides no mmr gain or loss as it is not considered a win.

I personally cannot imagine wanting a 4k so bad as to camp hatch, but I know everyone enjoys the game differently.

It’s literally not. Not once have I ever encountered the situation you are talking about in FOREVER. And I have a LOT of playing time. It’s not a big deal, move on.

It's not just smart. It's the only option other than for one side to make the wrong move.

If there are gens left what's stopping the survivor from doing gens and leaving by the exit gates if you camp hatch? If you move away from the hatch to patrol the now powered gates what's stopping the survivor from leaving through the hatch?

If the survivor doesn't try to do gens for a significant period of time (I think 20 minutes was mentioned) that's reportable under the ToS. After an hour I think the game hard closes but I might be wrong because I have literally never seen the situation you're describing with a single survivor. I have seen dual survivors drag it out but I think the longest they lasted was 30 minutes before I found one and forced an endgame scenario.

That begs the question though; why would you want to wait an hour to get a 4K in a match you already won? The hatch is an RNG pity escape for the last survivor of a match that the survivors already lost. Why waste your time?
