Onryo Review

Played her quite a bit and against her quite a bit the past 24 hours. I gotta say, overall, she's just okay. Not the worst, but hardly good.

Playing as her:

1. She feels clunky. This is probably my biggest gripe. Most of her transitions and animations are good. But the slowdown of her manifesting, without granting her additional speed coming out of it makes it feel just super clunky and weird. Her m1 feels super weird. Like the animation feels like it has this wind up or delay to it before it actually hits. My girlfriend was watching me play her and was the first to point out the delay from the time I pressed the button to her actually doing the attack. It feels like a lunge without being a lunge. It's just feels weird and clunky. And finally, her post match walking animation. Good God it looks like something pulled out of a PS2 game. It just looks super bad. It's looks glitchy, and not tv glitchy in a way that would fit her character. Glitchy like her model just got added to the alpha phase of an arcade game glitchy. It's that bad.

2. She's weak. Even her slight buffs did nothing to change this. Just the nature of her power is weak and everything she does is done better by another killer. Wraith has better stealth and cloaking, Freddy's teleporting is better, and even pyramid heads built in Mori is better. She just has dumbed down versions of other killer's powers and repackaged into a single kit. It feels uninspired.

I'm okay with her being a weaker killer. Not every released killer needs to be blight levels of strength. But I wish more thought was actually put into her.

Playing against her:

As a survivor, she wasn't really hard to go against. My very first match she caught me off guard twice, but after that she was literally just an m1 killer. Even if people played her well, she was still just a basic killer with a power that I could, and consistently did take away from her most matches. As I would take a tape, it would show me my tv which was 90% of the time the very next one or extremely close by. It usually took me 15-20 seconds to take my take, turn off two TV's and put my tape in another, which would take 4 of Her TV's away with no potential harm to myself. Her condemned never came into affect and the only time I saw her Mori was when she brought in an ebony and tunneled only one person.

Most games ended with 3-4 escapes. The two that didn't were because survivors would play badly. Like letting two people get to struggle phase on hook even though they weren't doing gens.

Overall playing as her just felt wonky and underwhelming, and playing against her was interesting the first time, and then just easy mode the rest of the time. 4/10.

  • Demanifest should being able to go through pallet and wall or add movement speed.

Sadako was better if she has anti loop or instant kill like michael myers.

  • I keep hearing people say she's not the worst. Like what killer is worse than Onyro, who?

I would say Legion, and Pig if RNG is not in her favor. If Legion doesn't get a lucky chain frenzy and is only injuring 1 person at a time I would say he/she is definitely the worst killer. Pig is strictly worse if some people get the traps off on the first or second try.

Onyro has RNG just like pig, but hers is far worse. Let's say that you get 7 stacks of condemned and you need to return a VHS tape to prevent yourself from getting killed. With Pig you would need to interact with boxes at random until you find the right box, with Onryo you would be told which of the television sets you need to go to exactly. Onyro is like pig if pig traps told you which one to go to.

It's even worse than that though. With pig the head traps actually kill the survivors, with Onyro you have to go out of your way to down the survivor yourself before you can mori them.

Also with Pig you are almost guaranteed to get a head trap placed on your head every game. But with Onyro you will get condemned 1 out of 100 games unless you go out of your way to get yourself condemened.

Legion is a better hit and run killer than Onyro and can use his power to consistently land a first hit. Onyro has stealth but that is much less consistent in getting the first hit, and she has no more tools than legion in getting the second hit.

Clown, Trapper, Wraith, Pig, Myers, Freddy

  • I guess we will se in some weeks how she turns out then.

I played her and got some good results - survs seem a bit confused. That might change.

I played against her and think she is a bit crazy and confusing atm but i like it - also she has many cool soundeffects going on.

Pig traps and Condemned are both just slowdown, not meant to kill. Onryo gets a free first hit. Pig doesn't get squat, unless you wanna crouch around at 90% movespeed. And her dash isn't a chase power at all but the most unsafe loops. Free first hit + mobility is better than anything pig gets if the bear traps don't buy her a ton of time.

Legion gets the free first hit too, but first he has to hold W all the way up to a survivor with a 32m terror radius and then has the massive cooldown to end frenzy. Onryo just walks up and gets the free first hit from stealth. After that they are basically the same. Legion is only better on the fringe case of getting like 3+ injuries with a lucky frenzy, which is contingent on the survivors being dumb enough to group up against a Legion.

When are you slowed down exactly? With Freddy the box with the clock is farthest away from you. With Onryo did you know that the box is chosen at random. And what's more when you take the video you then turn off the TV preventing her from teleporting to you. You can even go and take the tape you took and turn off the other TVs on the way to the TV that you need to go to and when you finally get there the animation to put the video tape in is less time than it takes a killer to wipe their weapon after hitting a survivor. So again, how could she possibly be better than legion or pig, they have better slow down and they have better tools in chase.

Because she gets a consistent free first hit? Pig doesn't unless you dedicate a bunch of your build towards it. Legion only gets it after a huge cooldown and after closing the distance on a survivor, which can take ages on some maps. Her walking up and getting a free hit out of undetectable is 100% better than Frenzy if the Frenzy isn't used to get chain hits. That's why Wraith is higher on every tier list than Legion.

But she doesn't just get free hits. She might be able to get a free hit on a map with no visibility at all. But on any outdoor map, there's no way. And indoor maps are the worst because they tend to be full of extremely safe loops for survivors. It's not like Onryo is having a field day on the Game or Lery's

You think Onryo won't have a field day on Lery's? It is Wraith's best map. It is Ghostface's best map. It will be Onryo's best map too.

I literally walk up to people and get free hits as Ghostface 24/7 on some of the most unfavorable maps imaginable. There is no way you are convincing me that somehow Onryo can't do it too.

  • I don't understand why they gave her a lullaby when she's supposed to be a stealth killer...makes no sense...

    Legion.

But I mean, that's not saying much.

  • I think putting the tape in should have the TV turn on, rather than off. I feel like that would also make more sense.

Holy crap...this is too good an idea to ever be implemented.

She's about on par with Pig, imho. Pig's slowdown is way more effective than hers, but she lacks the traversal.

Legion is worse - but Legion is earmarked for a rework.

She probably reminds me most of pre-rework Wraith - add traversal and minus his gap closer.
