Can we please please please do something about all of the players using VPNs?

Right now it's just cheating but it's allowed in the rules. How is it fair that killers can teleport behind players and grab them off of gens and it's considered fair. There really should be a ping limiter, it's so ridiculous and ruins the game for players that have good internet.

Comments

  • There should be ping limits on matchmaking, nobody should be able to connect to a lobby with 300 ping. I had a survivor with 1000ms the other day and I literally could not hook them

  • Really? When the game is filled with bugs that can allow people to be DDOSed, you want to prevent people from using a tool to stay safe.

  • The bigger issue is, that people ged DDOSed and swatted.

So don´t blame killers for trying to protect themselfes from this.

No I don't necessarily want the VPNs themselves banned, just the fact that you can cheat and have 300+ ping.

DDOS is an issue, I think the SWAT thing is a myth though. You generally can’t get someone’s physical address from an IP address.

For it being a myth, there has been an awful lot of streamers being affected by it.

Streamers who get SWATTED isn’t because of their IP address being public, it’s because they stream their games to the public and there are other ways to figure out where someone lives using information from their stream or their other contact information.

When you have high ping as a survivor it only hinders you because the game is based around the killer's screen. Whatever happens on the killer's screen is law, and if it happens that on the killer's screen the survivor is lagging way behind well then you get hit regardless.

I've had high ping as a survivor before and it just makes you freeze and then you fall to the ground cuz you were just standing there on the killer's screen.

Yeeeaaaah that information of yours is kinda outdated. Everything is server sided. Survivors can lag switch just as much as killers could back in the days you are refering to. Back when the killer was the host.

The only thing that is server sided are pallet drops and Dead Hard, that's it. Everything else is still killer sided and a dev just confirmed that the other day.

Moreover just because there are dedicated servers doesn't mean the hits aren't still decided by the killer, it's just on a server now instead of being hosted by the killer. It still takes into account the ping of the killer because they didn't truly make everything server-sided, they just jammed the old system onto a server. They are slowly making it server-sided however, like with pallet drops and Dead Hard.

So whats about the survivors that lag switch right before getting hooked? Killer can´t hook them and they wiggle out.

I´ve seen this a couple of times. Both as survivor and killer. The survivors ping jumped to 1000 and went back to normal, when he was free.

Ok well that's lag switching not using a VPN because if having high ping truly does make a difference in that scenario well a VPN gives you a disadvantage for every other thing in the game.

If you could prove that a VPN truly does benefit survivors then ofc I want the high ping block on survivors too, it should be fair, nowhere did I say that it shouldn't affect survivors too lol.

Its a issue that affects both sides.

Nevertheless, that people play on different servers could be the fault of how the system connects to a server instead of being someone abusing VPN. I´ve had some matches where my ping was around 100-120 when its usually around 50. Now during the match, everyone else also had a ping of 100+. Checking their profiles after the match, showed that the steam players were from different continents.

The devs mentioned that its the matchmaking that tries to find faster matches, which sometimes can set you up with one server instead of another. Which would explain the ping differences.

Well then do anything that helps the issue out but I know that VPNs themselves also cause issues cuz of players being able to connect to servers the entire world away. Either way It's just a rant post about how something should be fixed in any way it can be.

I think they are planning on fixing the issue of the matchmaking connecting players to the wrong server.

  • No they can't do anything about it, that's the nature of a VPN. Sorry bud but until the internet changes at a fundamental level VPNs are here to stay and no there is not an effective way to restrict them, well not something readily available to the public that is.

    ping limit.

  • So you’re acting like your own fun in a game is more important than others’ safety?

  • That is no different than saying something like "just do better!" It doesn't help and doesn't provide a solution. For the record they already have validation for extremely high pings, what you seem to want is to only have people with extremely fast pings which is not the majority. Also since you don't seem to be aware of this fact but VPNs typically make your connection a little bit faster, so in reality if you want the best experience everyone should be on VPNs. Oh and did I mention they protect your privacy as well?

Well I already established with proof that the only validation in this game is for pallet drops and Dead Hard which doesn't have anything to do with playing on 300+ ping because it will always be bad.

Secondly, the issue is that people are using VPNs to connect to servers that are across the world so it "typically making your connection a little bit faster" has nothing to do with that. If I connect to a server in China from the US my ping would be horrible and nice "a little bit faster".

As for the privacy thing, swatting due do dbd is a myth, it could be from a person streaming, not playing dbd. Sure DDOSing is an issue but if you are using a VPN to hide your true IP you could just connect to a server that's closer instead of connecting to China, so that is false too.

Hits are literally the one thing that work on the logic of "what happened on the Killer's end?" Everything else has to either be validated by the server or has checks to confirm whether something is doable--grabs, pickups, hooks--which is where you get cheaters using lagswitches to block actions. That's also why grabs are so unreliable, because a Survivor can cancel the animation on their end and it reports back to the Killer "not a grab", which definitely shouldn't be working that way.

You told me I was wrong on everything I said but when I asked for you to go into details you did not. The nature of a VPN is that you can't control it, hell even amazon has to jump through hoops to restrict VPNs and they can only do that by keeping track of where you live and your typical IP addresses. Friend I'm telling you that there is nothing BHVR can do, I'm not simping for them or white knighting or anything, in fact on a whole I dislike them as a company, however they can't control VPNs anymore than they can control the weather.

Idk bro ping limits are a very real thing for a lot of games, it's just that dbd does not have one. It's not like I'm the first person to ever come up with this idea it's a real thing for many video games.

  • Lol, Japanese games with ban foreigners on sight policies cant do it, i doubt BHVR could do it either

  • We have to protect ourselves from ddos. If you are good play around pallets and dead hard.

It's not a Myth it has happened to Twitch streamers alot lately while they were streaming. It's not about getting thier physical address just thier IP and losting bomb threats etc from that IP address

  • For the "VPNs for privacy/security reasons" argument, that is all well and good, but that is not the issue with VPNs being talked about here as good ones typically do not affect your ping much at all (and expensive ones can even improve it due to superior routing). The issue is people using them to region-hop, setting the VPN to far-away countries to the servers of which they obviously will have high pings.

Ping limits are probably not something we will see, as that would also prevent players from being able to play that have high pings due to no fault of their own (although I do think nobody with 300+ms should be allowed to play time-sensitive online PVP games - sucks for the people that legitimately have high pings like that, but those are luckily rare enough these days).

Another thing they could do is show pings in lobbies. Sure people with high pings like this will get dodged more often, but at least they still get to play at all.

The best solution of course would be to change the hitreg netcode such that latency does not benefit killers, therefore also making it unattractive for anyone to induce latency by means of VPN... The very least BHVR could do in this regard is reduce the threshold before their general hit validation implementation is activated (currently only at all active beyond 300ms, when it should already be at 100ms, and ideally of course regardless of latency). They would also have to polish that implementation a good bit though, since even at latencies well beyond 300ms, killers with the current state of that implemetation still get ridiculous hits regularly.

  • @Minecraft said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2746381#Comment_2746381

the safest and smartest thing would be to not play at all

It's technically neither as a VPN will completely protect you from the attack.

  • I think it is not really a VPN issue. Cheaters can increase their ping without it.

  • VPNs are important when people are getting DDOSed all the time

  • Just implement a ping limit and people can keep using vpns to protect from ddos problem solved

I dont know why but sometime i feel like the game put me on some far away server because survivor cant find a game fast enough.
