A good key nerf, possibly?!
Rather than changing the key itself, how about the Devs apply a Franklin's Demise effect to keys. If a survivor drops the key, the key will disappear after 60 seconds. So if someone dies on hook and it falls to the floor, their teammates have 60 seconds to get it. Same if the survivor places it on the floor or switches it out with an item out of a chest.
I don't think the Devs will remove the ability to allow more than one person to escape by hatch, instead, they will probably just add a new animation and progress bar. Who knows, they my surprise us, but if not, they should implement the above idea along with their changes.
Also, broken keys should have their model changed to a crystal ball so people won't get tunneled from the on start of the match.

An animation to open the hatch would be amazing because it actually gives the killer a slight chance to do something about it.
Not to mention, that idea you have about differentiating keys from eachother is brilliant. Well thought of!
As much as i hate keys, i dont think having a franklins effect will help. There have been many times where ill hide a key in a bush so i dont get tunnelled
Changing the hatch requirement to only spawn when either all gens or done or one survivor is left is still the best and easiest solution i have ever seen.
The only annoying part of keys is that matches end prematurelly. Adding an opening animation won't stop that
The Devs already have something planned so I don't think they will take ideas anymore. Maybe feedback but not new ideas
That's the thing, the Franklin's effect will cause the key to disappear if you leave it in the bush for more than 60 seconds, which will make the key more high risk. This way you're forced to carry it or give it to someone else and the killer has a chance to get rid of it, which I think is fair since it really does prematurely end the match, screwing them out of points.
Good change would be to make hatch spawn at 5 gens or 1 survivor left and not touch keys at all.
Easy, fast, effective. So it's not going happen.
i generally always wanted keys to not drop under hooks when the survivor with it died, unless they brought a specific add on for it (basically a reverse "dont lose the key when you die" offering)
Keys would be fine if they took time to open and alerted the killer in some way.
my main issue with keys is simply it being instant it's bs that a survivor can wait at the hatch for others or just in general open it in your face.
i don't think they would need to change hatch spawning conditions if they simply did those two things.
