Trapper power rework: The Trapper's Hunting Dog

I just had an interesting idea for a way to make the Trapper more fun and interesting: The Entity gave Evan a big, spooky hunting dog!

Note that this would require BVR to make actual AI, potentially allowing an actually effective tutorial and/or even a training/practice mode. Also, line of sight would have to be fixed, thus fixing Ghostfaces power.

The dog would have two modes: search and hunt. This would be toggled with the secondary power button, causing the Trapper to whistle and wave towards himself or point in the air, respectively. The dogs default state is search.

Search mode: "C'mere boy/girl!"

The dog stays by the Trapper, within 15 meters. If they detect an injured survivor within 6 meters of the Trapper, they will stop moving, growling, bristling, and facing the survivor until the Trapper enters a chase or the survivor leaves the radius.

In this mode, the dog will occasionally go and bring the Trapper bear traps if the Trapper is missing on of the two bear traps he starts with by default if any traps are within 32 meters of the Trapper. They will carry them in their mouth until the Trapper presses the secondary power button, causing him to pet his doggo and take the trap.

While in search mode, the dogs aura is revealed to the Trapper.

Hunt mode: "Get em', boy/girl!"

Whenever a survivor is caught in a trap or hooked, gain a token.

If the dog isn't holding a bear trap, the Trapper can burn a token to toggle hunt mode.

In this mode, the dog begins searching for survivors. They have their own terror radius and red stain, half the size of the Trappers by default. It is not aware of undropped pallets, but it is aware of set bear traps, and will avoid them when possible.

Whenever it sees a survivor within 45 meters, or smells them (survivor within 6 meters), it will howl (loud noise), aggro onto them, and will chase the survivor until the survivor escapes the chase, the dog detects another survivor with higher priority (discussed in a bit), or they catch the survivor they're chasing.

In the event that they catch a survivor, the dog will grab them, biting their hand. While grabbed, the survivor can't move and can be picked up by the Trapper. The survivor must complete two very hard skillchecks to escape the dog's grasp. If the survivor succeeds on both checks, they free themselves and stun the dog for three seconds. On a great success, the survivor will throw the dog off of them, causing the dog to run back to the Trapper and enter search mode. If the survivors fail either of the skillchecks, they are injured for one healthstate, and gain the Dog's Bite bebuff.

The dog will attempt to herd survivors into any set bear traps, or into the Trapper's line of sight.

During the endgame collapse, the dog moves 15% faster.

Dog's Bite:

While afflicted with Dog's Bite, survivors have a significantly harder time on skillchecks (I don't know much about skillchecks, but it'll make them all at least one stage harder or something, IDK), and they heal, repair gens, and perform actions at 85% speed. Whenever the dog smells them while in search mode, the afflicted survivor has their aura revealed.

If a survivor is afflicted with Dog's Bite, their priority is reduced by 5.

Priority:

Each survivor has their own priority, which determines who is the most valuable target for the dog while they are hunting.

Positive priority:

  • In a chase: + 3
  • Holding a key: + 1
  • Injured: + 1
  • Closest survivor: + 2
  • In a trap currently: + 2
  • In a trap less than 15 seconds ago: + 1
  • Healing another survivor: + 2
  • Working on a generator: + 1
  • Holding open the gates: + 3
  • Negative status effect (other than Dog's Bite): + 1
  • Unhooked another survivor: +1 per survivor
  • On their last hook: + 2

Negative priority:

  • Dog's Bite: - 5
  • Freed themselves from the dog less than 30 seconds ago: - 2
  • Freed themselves from a hook less than 30 seconds ago: - 5
  • Recovered from the dying state less than 15 seconds ago: -3
  • On their second hook: -1

Anyway, that's my idea.

It may seem like I thought this out, but I just wrote this off the top of my head.

Tell me if this seems cool to you, what changes you'd make, and what the dog's name and gender would be.

  • NGl i got turned off the second i read AI, in games that have controls like this along with vaults and yada AI's would suffer and be very easy to loop and with the amount of bugs this game presents im sure it will get stuck a lot.

IF they did make a good AI which i highly doubt they can just look at mobile that does have AI's than the idea is is pretty good but i think it should be on it's own killer. I get that trapper struggles with traps but that is the only connection i see between his power and the dogs and the dog would definitely not be able to herd survivors into traps that would only happen if the survivor was going to that traps location in the first place.

however the skill check thing? i feel like this would only be good against new players so the event that the dog would actually injure someone at all would be rare, skill checks for any power should only be included if it's for stalling/interacting and while this does that I feel the dog isn't strong enough for it to need that and it probably wont get survivors easy enough either.

  • I have a secondary power for trapper too that is very similar to yours in terms of skill checks however it is more for protecting gens.

    Trapper secondary power: rigged generators

Press the secondary ability when interacting with a gen to trap the generator. This power has a base 45 second recharge. Rigging a generator applies a base 10% regression but stops natural regression, there is no limit to the amount of generators that can be rigged at once.

When a survivor interacts with a rigged generator they must succeed 5 skill checks (lasts 10 seconds), if the survivor fails one of the skill checks or stops this interaction they lose a health state, the gen regresses a further 15%, and the generator is no longer rigged.

If a proper AI could be made in this game your idea is better but a bit complex.

    Thanks for the feedback!

It was just off the top of my head, but the idea wasn't absolute garbage like usual, so I decided to post it.

  • It's a pretty neat idea imo, but I really doubt they could get the AI working for this. If only

  • It really wouldn't matter how good/bad this idea was, Trapper with a dog isn't the same character. And, even though Trapper could certainly use buffs, his current core concept has aged quite well and I don't want it changed. You'd be better off pitching this as a new Killer altogether.

    Admittedly, yeah.

  • Seems to me that this dog doesn’t even need the trapper’s help. He can just let survivors bleed out instead of hooking them.
