Can you show the true ranks so we can provide feedback?

I see a lot of complaints about the new matchmaking, however i believe we cannot provide accurate feedback until true ranks are shown.

We don't know if the ranking system is working or broken if it remains hidden.

How can we see our own performance based off your new matchmaking, and how the system determines what it classifies as skill, that raises or lowers our rank?

Will ranks remain hidden or are you planing to show the true ranks at the end of the match?

I don't like this as it sounds like an excuse.

Most, if not all games with a ranking system are shown, and i have never seen a person complain or dread about their own rank, apart from the fact that they want to improve.

The previous ranking system was shown and i don't believe anyone had a problem with it, apart from it being clearly broken.

How would it be any different to show it now or later on down the track? That absolutely makes no sense.

Again, we cannot provide feedback on what we cannot see. We don't know how the system determines ranks, skill or how it even works because it's hidden.

I also suspect we won't get patch notes about it either since we won't know if something is/was being changed, if it's working as intended or if something breaks, so they can just hide it from the community without any complaints.

To play 'the game the best they can', we need to see where we can improve, if we are improving or not, the difference between our rank and the people we are vs'ing, otherwise what's the point of having the matchmaking at all if it's hidden? Hell, we don't even know if it's working correctly right now, and i'm not just going to take the Devs word for it.

  • No, usually they complain about the rank of their teammates, or the (lower) rank of their discussion partner.

I read so many posts of "killer mains" that quite obviously never played killer for real, its not even funny. People try to get credebility by this, and mmr rank would just be the next measurement to dismiss the arguments of people not agreeing with you.

I wish it did, I want to know where I currently stand. That would explain why some of us keep getting rank 20 teammates.

Maybe we aren't as good as we thought we were.

There's not many competative games with a working MMR system out there that outright hide the matchmaking statistics from their players. The players playing needs to know if they're doing good or bad, so they can improve themselves.

Which games are y'all playing. The vast majority of pvp games I can think of hide their mmr and only display ranks like what we currently display now exept instead of 20 through 1, a lot are using tiers like bronze, silver, and gold with different divisions amongst them.

  • The only real reason to hide it is if they think it's not gonna work properly. Saying people would better be able to know what makes it go up or down to manipulate it is just disingenuous. People know how to play bad and how to play good, that isn't going to stop them.

Hiding it prevents us from being able to call them out on it like we did when matching was based on ranks.

This is especially a nightmare for new players who have no idea what's going on. The only thing they see is ranks..that don't matter for matching..but make you think matching is screwed up...instead of the actual "ranking" that matches you...that isn't shown.

Like just look at how messed up and confusing that is for a new player...or even just in general. It's a mess.

We've selected a few questions from the community about the new matchmaking system and had them answered by the team.

    • I know you’re looking at skill across different killers but are you looking at skill across different survivors too? even though survivors are just skins, we still have to grind for open perk slots which, for a less experienced survivor like myself, that’s a big deal

Generally speaking, the performance difference between a low level survivor (as in, the character level is low) and a high level survivor for a given player isn’t statistically extreme. It also changes very quickly, relatively speaking: It doesn’t take that many games for a low level survivor to get to a reasonable level. To complicate it further, it can even happen over “0” games, if you got the BP from some other means! All that said, we’re going to keep an eye on this and see if it plays out differently in reality, and potentially modify the system to take this into account.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/150WZBYV10VT/patchnotesdividersmolwhite.png

    • Can we get a little insight into how SWF matchups will be balanced in the new system?

Currently, SWF groups will calculate an average rating of the players in the group, and then the matchmaking system will attempt to find an opponent based off that average. We will be monitoring this and the results it gives in the real world, and may tweak the formula to produce better results if we identify any problems.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/07DXKY7XE8V0/patchnotesdividersmolwhite.png

    • How is it gonna be fair to those that are new as a survivor? I feel bad for them

We’re specifically monitoring the experience of new players to ensure the system doesn’t immediately throw them games where they are hopelessly outmatched, and we have a few techniques that we’re implementing already to help with this. Lots of technical / mathematic details, but the basic effect will be that new players tend to get matched at a lower skill rating while they’re still new.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/TGFAZUA81XL9/patchnotesdividersmolwhite.png

    • So after reading this post why aren't the current ranks not weighted in the starting skill rating for the player base?

We’ve already been running the skill rating calculation in the background for several months, in order to collect data and to validate some elements of our approach. Anyone who has been playing regularly in that time will already have a loosely calibrated skill rating to start with, which will be refined with each game they play now that the system is live.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/FNM6B04UNAD6/patchnotesdividersmolwhite.png

    • Is it taken into consideration if players have returned from the game after a long hiatus. Some examples are some people returning after a year or even two.

Without getting into extreme mathimatical details: Yes, the system does take how long it has been since you last played into account with the rating system.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/OQ1TAUEV9UFQ/patchnotesdividersmolwhite.png

    • Why are ranks so mismatched now?

The Matchmaking News post we made went into detail about this, but to summarize: Ranks are mostly a measure of how much you play in a given month, and doesn’t have a very good correlation with game skill. Skill rating is completely driven by how skilled you are at the game, so there will be some divergence between the two. The rank system will be getting updated Soon(tm) to reflect this difference.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/20LI55NFCJ4C/patchnotesdividersmolwhite.png

    • Why are we keeping the skill rating hidden?

For every player who gets really excited at the prospect of seeing their skill rating, there is another player who dreads it. For now, to encourage everyone to play the game the best they can, we are keeping the skill rating hidden. We have plans to expose it somewhat in the future, but nothing to announce at this time.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/01VR4OI1EPR4/patchnotesdividersmolwhite.png

    • What will it mean to Ranks in the Tally Screen?

Right now, the Emblem system / Rank system is being left as-is. We wanted to get the skill rating system out and in player’s hands as quickly as possible. The rank system will be getting updated Soon(tm).

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/A1KXBT9T9HR6/patchnotesdividersmolwhite.png

    • Is the rating started counting now, or already set from past performance?

Ratings are initially based on your performance over the last few months, while the system has been collecting data in the background.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/5HFZKHX7LQ75/patchnotesdividersmolwhite.png

    • What are the factors that affect the ratings?

Ratings change based on how you perform in a match while taking your opponents rating into account. If you outplay an opponent who has a much higher rating than yours, then your rating will be adjusted quite a bit. If you outplay an opponent who had a lower rating than yours, then the adjustment is quite small.

    • Does this mean that those with different NAT types that weren't able to play together before (unless they had a connection with the lobby leader) can now play together?

The skill rating has not direct relation to NAT and network connectivity, as it is used to determine who matches together. As long as your NAT type allows you to connect to the dedicated server, you should be fine to play with anyone else (who can also connect to the dedicated server, of course). Since we are now using servers instead of P2P, NAT incompatibilities are less of an issue.

    • Why are we keeping the skill rating hidden?

For every player who gets really excited at the prospect of seeing their skill rating, there is another player who dreads it. This is the reason they gave out why they want to keep it hidden.

Apparently, they plan to show more at some point?

  • They showed our old rankings what is the difference in showing the new ones? I dont get it. They didnt care about the dread people felt before...so stupid.

Try actually reading what was written instead of what you want to be written to prove an unsaid statement wrong. I quite clearly said that most games hide mmr and only show general ranks. I don't even know how you can misread that unless you're intentionally trying to. Or are you just not smart enough to realize that mmr and rank are 2 different things?

Unless you're also the kind of person who's ignorant to the difference between mmr and rank, how did that possibly prove your statement correct? And even if you don't know the difference, why would you bother posting your original statement when this game still obviously shows rank?

those ranks are a representation of your mmr. are they not?

so, yes. the games are showing you your mmr.

The same thing makes them go up and down, but ranks are a result of victory or loss with no measurement of opponent's skill while mmr is completely based on measuring your opponents skill in comparison to your own and fluctuating the rating accordingly. Your rank changes by the same amount on win/loss while your mmr constantly changes by different amounts. Ranks are a representation of win and loss streaks. Match making rating is an attempt to measure skill.

Also, if you think they're the same thing, shouldn't the main topic of this thread be more of a concern for you? They're claiming they want mmr to be shown. If you think that ranks are a representation of mmr, doesn't that mean it's being clearly represented in a visible manner?

  • Can anyone name me a PvP game that doesn't show the ranking in any way?

  • They can keep up the cognitive dissonance if they don't show rank.

Lose as a survivor? Obviously i got paired with lower MMR players, nothing I could do

Lose as killer? Obviously got matched with SWF team 6 highest MMR players, nothing I could do

They don't want your feedback because they know it's a deeply flawed system. I mean just look at any of the numerous threads showing players with 10,000 hours in the game playing against fresh accounts, it's silly.
