There are no plans to remove Anon Mode, the whole point of it was to give a level on anonymity to the player - which it does very well, especially our Content Creators. It does not stop players reporting that player, nor stop them talking in the chat, which is basic to every PC platform as it is not designed to do that - it is not there to police the player who wishes to remain anonymous. The reporting system handles issues with players, whether they are anonymous or not.

Thank you for an official reply Mandy! I hope one piece of feedback that could be taken into consideration is improvements to the reporting system in terms of transparency and feedback as it would go a long way to rekindle player trust in the system! Feedback reports are few and far between, even with blatant cheaters, so it's a bit disheartening. Thanks again!

I can't agree with this anonymous is there to protect sure some people use it to be toxic but we can't remove just cause of that I really don't wanna be the target of streamers and content creators.

Like on Twitter if you play wrong or you do something they don't just like. They will make a twitter cancellation witchhunt on you and find your twitter to harass you or like YouTube to be put in those dbd videos or compilations with your name there.

I do not want to be a victim of any of this which is why I never turn off anon mode but I'm sorry it has to stay.

Then surely it is up to BHVR to take a bigger stance on this issue than they already have. If streamers are exhibiting this kind of toxic behaviour then they can't feign ignorance. Through reading a lot of the comments I understand the necessity of anonymous mode for some players to avoid being attacked, however it doesn't address the underlying issue and it sucks. The only comments we've had from a BHVR moderator in this post haven't made me feel any better about it either.

The question is what exactly does the anon mode prevent you from doing?

You can still report them, what else could you want?

Prevents me from avoiding them in the future.

If it stops people getting stream sniped and receiving abusive messages then it should absolutely stay in the game. You do get some players on anonymous mode who will play very toxicly but they are still reportable. You just can't send them salty messages, which you shouldn't do anyway, it feeds the trolls.

It sadly absolutely does not prevent people from getting stream sniped, people are most definitely able to stream snipe and they just have to look in the stream to verify if they're in the right lobby. If BHVR came out and demonstrated that the reporting feature actually worked then that'd be great, but at the moment we have very little evidence of that. Even reporting blatant cheaters is hit and miss, I receive feedback report on cheaters 1/5 times? The teleporting, instant healing, instant gen popping kind of cheaters.

It's pretty hard to get in trouble for egc toxicity when half of the English dictionary is censored anyway. I find censoring swear words to be strange since this is a 17+ game. Obviously the bigoted messages and threats should be censored but swear word censoring just feels weird is all. Though if they somehow make out legible insults through bypassing the censorship with workarounds, yeah there should definitely be a chat ban mechanic

Ah yeah I had forgotten about the weird censoring. That's a fair point, and agreed.

In the case of Anon being used as a shield to avoid spreading hate without receiving comebacks from others, why doesn't anonymous block everyone's names by default? That way, they can't spread hate to others unless their name is public too. they also shouldn't be able to use egc to shield themselves with anon and spread hate (first point follows. Just make it so Anon doesn't allow access to social features like viewing other people's profiles or leaving in game messages unless their name is also public)

To piggyback on this, I'm not sure what measures (if any) are taken if someone is found to be overly toxic/hateful/harassing etc. But I'm pretty sure I've never heard of a player being chat restricted or having received any kind of suspension for their behaviour. Something that's pretty common in pretty much all other video games.

You are in this thread questioning users why they are receiving these messages. I respect that this is your opinion related to anonymous mode, but it is not the fault of players being harassed and their point raised that they shouldn't have to take alternative methods to avoid that type of behavior is valid.

I mean, if you play the game a certain amount of time you will see what kinds of behaviours are exhibited by players and why. Suggesting that the users in this thread might have a reason to have received those kinds of messages is out of line, but it's not a mystery why something like that could happen. That is the bottom line here. Once again if there are alternative ways presented by BHVR to avoid these kinds of behaviours then that's great. But at the moment it's kind of a big problem and that's why I created this thread, so we might discuss it?

I will once again mention that the in-game reporting feature is severely lacking.

  • Anonymous mode fosters the toxicity. If the blocking feature would allow you to avoid that person in future matches (I know that that is a whole can of worms in and of itself) then that would be a different story. I don't particularly care to know who the person is, I just don't want to encounter them again. If there's a way to do that while preserving anon mode, then all the better.

I think it's important that we do not blame the victims of this negative behavior; it is punishable by our Game Rules if you are abusive through the chat, regardless if they have the chat minimized or not. No one is "asking" for harassment by having a public profile.

That wasn't what I said in the quoted post though. I'm presenting alternatives, not suggesting that a public profile is an invitation to being harassed.

Some people like having their steam profiles viewable to others. If the game gives them an option to prevent them from toxic people in the game and they prefer that over closing their profile, then it is frankly none of your business.

Report anon players if they are cheating or being toxic in egc. You do not need to know who they are to do that.

You can still have your profile viewable to others while blocking comments. You seem to be misunderstanding the whole reason of this post. I'm explicitly advocating for the removal of this feature for the toxicity it brings in game. If you read the post it's also mentioned how reporting does nothing :).

Why are you suggesting that we don't need to know who they are? That is shielding griefers or people with toxic behaviour. Again, why are we forced to potentially play with these people again and have repeats of negative experiences. Open any DBD stream or ask someone and I guarantee they will tell you that they've had someone grief them and that that person was anonymous.

I don't care to know who they are to harass them, I want to avoid encountering them again, to the best of my ability. That's impossible with anonymous mode.

With the side effect some of the most insulting players ive interacted with have it on because its i guess a shield against accountability. (Ik bhvr can punish them anyway but depends how severe they take insulting i guess)

Exactly. This is primarily a shield for awful behaviour. There's no way to track or avoid the people because they are anonymous. Reporting is extremely inconsistent as mentioned before. If BHVR wants to improve the reporting feature so that it actually does something, or incorporate an "avoid teammate" feature like in Marvel Rivals or Overwatch then great, keep anon mode for those who want to use it and allow the rest of us to distance ourselves from griefers and toxic people.

Before anonymous, if I'd done anything that wasn't in either rule book, I'd sometimes get messages telling me to go do things to myself. You can laugh about it, that's fine, but I don't want those types of messages.

Again, where are these messages being sent? You can hide the end-game chat in the pre-match lobby by clicking on the "-" sign. If you're receiving messages on your steam profile, why is your profile allowing that? On top of that, you have the option to deny friend requests so people won't be messaging you.

  • @TamaraLatte said:

Nah, I'll pass on angry killers and survivors giving me ######### through Steam, thanks. Anonymous is great!

How do people give you ######### through Steam lmao? This is just giving you have a tendency to be toxic and have people upset towards you. My steam profile is public, I don't allow comments. Simple as that.

  • @fulltonon said:

Yes it isn't possible, because it'll just make good players to be blocked.

I hadn't considered that, to be honest. Surely there is a way to prevent harassment or playing with/against players you have had bad experiences with.

How about the function makes it so you don't see their texts in chat anymore? That would actually be useful...

That would be nice, but there's also the issue of their gameplay…
