The current form of antialiasing is used as not only antialiasing, but as a workaround for texture transperancy iirc. That's why all hair is weird and super "pixely" when you disable it.

and When is the reason/time to nerf engravings hypothetically?
There's no need for them to be nerfed? I've outlined why and how it's a bad thing from direct knowledge of how his power functions.
It's a set of challenge addons for the sake of a fun challenge. It makes him harder. He's not played by the casual community because the only alternative to curvebilly is only really double boots or lopro/doom. The speed and difficulty in chase is everything that makes him fun! High addon usage rate and the effectiveness is because he's currently designed to only be tolerable for the most dedicated of dedicated, and the solution is definitely not erasing the dedicated community. I can only imagine it's a situation of survivorship bais, and it's leading to the wrong changes happening.
This will mostly only kill billy for the dedicated remaining playerbase. He needs meaningful changes in so many other ways to make him enjoyable for the casual players, because these changes won't fix him being unfun for the average person.

That seems like a convenient excuse to me. But even so if you are THAT oppressive with Billy surely we would want to nerf that?
When is the reason to nerf engravings then I wonder?
You do realize that it's still incredibly easy to win against me as a survivor, right? I do get a LOT of kills, but I easily can have a higher winrate on many other killers who take substantially less time than 4500 hours. You have to play perfectly AS IS, to not mess up with what double engravings provide. And predropping/breaking for distance still absolutely destroys me, if someone's aware enough of pallet locations.
It's not an issue of me being too oppressive, I just know how to play the game REALLY well compared to everyone else. I'd have a higher killrate on huntress, nurse, blight, oni, or any other killer. The difference between those killers and billy, is that billy not only requires me to play damn near perfect, it ALSO requires them to just be aware and react to my curve starting. Lots of people never even look behind themselves, and they are generally the ones who give up instantly. I also happen to play at night, when less swf's are online and a lower population count, making the MMR a lot less strict.
Billy isn't oppressive. He just doesn't have to hit you twice if you don't pay attention, and he has to be VERY on point mechanically to do so. Do you really think removing the channels for high dedication in skill expression is something that should be removed, especially when it's not hard to play against in the first place?
Edit - Like, the entire reason my gameplay looks as it does is because I play this game intentionally to challenge myself and have been doing so for the entirety of my 6000+ hours in game. I've been intentionally looking for the hardest, but most fair stuff I can use. Billy really is what that is. I quit nurse after 1k hours with her, due to how easy it is to win. Her and many other killers just don't give any level of meaningful chase interaction once you're good enough with them, but Billy with doubles still gives meaningful agency to the survivor in chase despite my massive hourcount. It's high risk, high reward for BOTH sides, and requires a disproportionate amount more effort from me. I can't imagine anything more fair than that.

You claimed they would have a good reason for every change they make without providing evidence...
No im pretty sure that is a clear as an assumption, if you were unsure about that you can just ask. I don't assume bHVR is malicious.
So they probably have a good reason, seems weirdly strange to roll out the whole company arm for nothing. You tell me.
You claimed they would have a good reason for every change they make without providing evidence... Therefore that statement can be dismissed, same goes for things overperforming and therefore getting nerfed... That is also just an assumption, unless they stated that as the reason for toning down the addons...
Seems kind of weird do me that in a world of Video games and Video Game companies, they cant do changes to their videogames without me having to prove they are not malicious. I think that is rather bad standard, but the problem is you are only here to give me crap over me pointing out what was wrong with the other guys statements first. It IS trying to shift the burden of proof and its not on the topic either.
Like if you were really invested in finding out the truth, you would not waste time with me. I don't hold the stats either.
when you just claim stuff without providing evidence or at least a somewhat logical explanation for stuff then either the other team or the juror will just dismiss your argument that easily...
Yeah that might fly in debate club or British parliament, but to me who are invested in the topic it matters not. Its just shifting the burden of proof, which is a fallacy. To me you are clearly #5 in the following list and its a waste of my time on this topic.
- bHVR is doing a mistake by nerfing the engravings.
- What is the mistake?
- The mistake is the engravings are fine, they don't need a nerf.
- How do you know engravings are fine?
- WHERE ARE YOUR EVIDENCE TO PROVE ENGRAVINGS ARE NOT FINE, MISTER-
You you want to goat at me, then goat.

You are replying to a covo I had with Xernoton's long post about addon, but mainly the last point he made that
Something performing the best does not mean it's overperforming. Billy isn't overperforming. Period. If he was we'd have seen that with the last kill rates or the ones before. Because since he has not received a single buff. Quite the opposite in fact. It's been nerfs and shadow nerfs as well as reworked maps, which are all horrible for him, no exceptions.
The point is, Statistics are worth looking at and that isn't just kill rates. But also downrates and many other rates, like I have even watched your streams during all this. Seeing how people self sacrifice vs you its pretty clear why they are nerfed. You move way to fast to give an avg. survivor a chance imo. Now if you want to convince me I am wrong about that assessment we can continue here. But I think we all rather want answers at this point and that means asking bHVR.
People self sacrifice because the game is fundamentally flawed and has had a skill drain issue due to the balance surrounding it. Generally, there aren't good billy players at this point. Nobody knows how to play around him, and generally, ANY oppressive killer tends to get people going next. Ralph, another streamer, gets it MUCH more often than I do when he's playing huntress. I play any killer besides basic m1 killers, and I still get it somewhat often.
That's why so many people give up. I ask all the time, and it's mostly because they got a bad match prior and didn't want to have to be so focused on the next match.
-
And I've tested the addons, exactly what I described is the situation. Billy is now able to camp somebody for 80 seconds while revving with doubles, he has no high end skill ceiling, and overheat basically doesn't exist outside of circling the map with basekit/boots. Double engravings are basically unusable in chase. Muscle memory is also drastically different, which is a further thing to drive experienced players away from the killer.
The fun part about him, and the entire game, is the chase. He's balanced on a knife's edge with the movement speed gain/loss as is, if the engravings aren't kept the same rev time and movement speed, he basically can't curve against anyone experienced. It was possible before, if you were really good at billy. He's just extremely good at zoning + map traversal, and very little else.
He's stronger, yes, but he's stronger in every way that harms the game, and weaker in the way he adds to it best. Chase interaction is everything for what makes him fun, and there's very little of that now. \

I disagree, if an addon combo in particular is causing a high kill rate bHVR needs to bring out the hammer.
If not by that logic no addon could ever be nerfed.
Here's the thing, if you're good, double engravings are much easier to play around than most other addons. Double engravings are factually, not his strongest addons. They're the most fun and difficult, but definitely not the best. Never have been. So, what point are you trying to make here...?

Thats why theres such an uproar about this change: instead of going in that direction, theyre removing the possibilty for players to bridge that gap with skillful application of these addons themselves.
If an addon is overperforming, I don't see what you expect them to do. Besides I heard alot of Hillbillys in this chat saying they love "hard gameplay" so that would be exactly what you want.
https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3381752#Comment_3381752
but according to most, you are the minority. most people consider hilly billy a very fun killer to play against. you are literally one of the only people in this forum for the billy nerf
Yeah, this is something we hear a lot here. But do you have some studies to support that claim? besides your personal experience or if you are that streamer dude who only gets people coming in to throw roses as him-
The difficulty with billy directly comes from the movement speed. It's mechanical and mental difficulty from having to time everything right ON TOP of correctly guessing their actions.
This change doesn't make billy harder, just weaker. The interactive part of the power in chase is the high movement speed, high sensitivity window. Any slower directly hamstrings both the difficulty and strength. He won't have the ability to curve to the same capacity, and just have to use his saw for backrevving/zoning.
That's not skillful or difficult, just in the same way a killer like legion isn't really skillful or difficult. We're speaking about MECHANICAL skill, which is a very raw and direct thing. Aiming is another one. And just because something's being overused definitely doesn't mean it needs to be adjusted. People enjoy OPTIONS. Movement speed in chainsaw sprint directly results in more options. Same reason people use dead hard, but the difference is that you have to spend hundreds to thousands of hours to develop the muscle memory behind curving. And billy exists in a state where he can be tuned for new players because I do agree some changes should happen to make him more tolerable, but the movement speed reduction only cuts off the dedicated playerbase. Another note, that muscle memory? It's tied to the movement speed. Nerfing addons that people have had around for 7 years means that 7 years of muscle memory is being dropped. Those people aren't going to want to relearn a weaker, less interactive killer.
And the evidence for the last point you mentioned will never be enough, you're clearly discrediting that purely off of what you see as ego. You're not looking to have a conversation. And that's fine if you don't like me because you think my word may have some inherent bias, but let's refocus on the main point, alright? The mention of me streaming has zero relevance to any point in your eyes, but that's no reason to make snide comments. It shows nothing but bad faith.

Im certain if CS made a gun and people didnt get kills with it until after using it for 100h, then they would admit they made a mistake. but in DbD land you guys think that cause for celebration. (its not)
It takes significantly less than 100 hours to get a basic control of the chainsaw. I've literally taught people within a day how to control it in a basic sense.

Wait, is OP well known or something?
Somewhat. Don't take this explanation as an ego thing.
I've been streaming exclusively billy nonstop for the past two years, running nothing but double engravings and for the first year, it was around 12 hours a day streamed on average. It's what I'm known for, because it's all I do constantly. I'm debatably the best at playing billy this way. (Tbh I think there are some others that are better, but I definitely have the most raw experience.)
Sure, this potentially poises a conflict of interest, but that would only realistically matter if I cared about winning in the slightest. There is the angle of "this impacts your job as a streamer so ofc you'd care", but I feel like that's obvious and proves my point as well. People want to WATCH fun stuff, and that's what's being removed.
I'm not well known to the broader audience of DBD, but your favorite content creator very likely knows of me.

Aww I just love how you've said were buds to try and cope. I don't know them, I just found it funny. But if they want to be buds with me they can. You can too :)
You made it known time and time again that "MANY HIGHLY HOURED PLAYERS" agree with you but sorry Jan. MANY HIGHLY HOURED PLAYERS, yours truly included. don't. Just because you have high hours doesn't mean you have higher priority over other players, nor does it make your opinion or takes correct.
Billy isn't dead, the addons are dumb and needed changing. It doesn't require thousands of hours to do like you imply and the devs are right in changing them.
You write so many absolutes and none of them are right lol. Game doesn't revolve around billy mains.
enough to be communicating in mcclean's discord, but like, all of this is irrelevant? like why do you care so much about the weird side details here
Billy will be significantly less interesting, that's the point being made. Less chase interaction, more backrevving, and significantly more m1s.
That's not something that can be denied. Forget what's been said, that point i'm making is what's important.

Never said it was a thing of people telling me they love playing against me when I play billy. Just raw exposure to many people. It's really disappointing that you both had that as an immediate takeaway, especially for someone with your hour count.

It's pretty crazy then that you meet so few people who differ on billy then. Must be pretty jarring to come across more than one person too.
I think if we take a minute perceive even beyond that and think about hours that other people have and the amount of people they interact with as well we can come to an even wackier conclusion that peoples opinion vary beyond to our select groups. But then again the world seems to revolve around your twitch chat so maybe not KEKW.
For the record I have quite a few thousand hours, friends with quite a few as well and not everyone is head over heels over the stagnant gameplay that is flick billy. Not to mention this opinion is across the board from people with <100 to friends with +5000. But who knows clearly it's just a one sided perception that "everyone loves billy"
No, I run into a lot of people who don't enjoy playing against him or playing as him. I understand my biases well. My statements stand.

It is of complete coincidence that my billy only stream seems to only attract people who agree with me and because of this it is easy to determine that this is the majority.

That is still bad product design. bHVR really ought to packup that idea of keeping a Killer being insufferable to play as just because someone says "It's not a bad thing to have a difficult killer" is really bad. Luckily for us they dont make Killers anymore that are insufferable to play as, they have well designed powers you can easily use and that is why Hillbilly deserves a rework instead of life support in death while being bad to play as.
A high skill ceiling? Sure you can have it, but there has to be standards for mechanical requirements to play a Killer and billy is way off.
https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3379538#Comment_3379538
I'm glad you are aware of the issues with Hillbilly, but im not here to retell you that. Im here to suggest to bHVR a full rework of Hillbilly would be better than what exists now. Its fine if you want to tell me not to play him. I already stopped. I only play him when I have a daily to give him a worthy try like every month, but its rarely worth the trouble.
These are concerns I raise cause its just a unhealthy way to manage a product. bHVR needs to realize that.
https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3379553#Comment_3379553
Overheat has never been an issue for me on Hillbilly. Less overheat will do little to improve his play rate. Nor has bumping into stuff. Its the mechanical requirement that is out of whack. I think bHVR could solve that with a rework.
The mechanical challenge isn't really even there. If you don't have engravings, he's not hard. That version of billy exists, he just needs better addons among other changes.

Source: Trust me bro I know the opinion of every survivor player in the world
Source is actually me basically being an oft visited stream by a lot of VERY high hour players, and most of them can't play billy at all. You actually do start to know most people up there once you put around 6000+ hours total in the game and stream it for the past few years. People love billy, it's a super common sentiment with high hour players.

Just jumping in here to provide feedback as well. I've got roughly the same amount of hours as Vel on Billy alone (11k hours total) and we've even had lengthy discussions on discord about the state of billy and how he could be changed to address those concerns. This change is, with all due respect, idiotic at best and outright incompetent at worst. Billy already has a significant amount of counterplay and the saw is difficult (but not impossible) to land on good survivors if you're trying to curve. The engravings, whether you're running doom / lopro or death, are required because without any kind of base speed increase you're simply too slow to be a threat in loops. This doesn't even begin to cover the fact that of his addons, only 4 (punctured muffler, death, doom and lopro) are decent (i'm not including carb because it's extremely map dependent to provide consistent value).
Running both engravings provides a unique playstyle that as Vel stated allows a high expression of mechanical skill with Billy. Nerfing the engravings not only lowers that skill ceiling but also makes him worse to play for existing billy mains. Him being a hard killer to learn is fine, but at least allow there to be an incentive for players wanting to adopt the curving style of play. Each time you miss with your power it's almost the equivalent of being hit by old DS. Not to mention that with both engravings you're already looking at roughly a 3.2 sec charge time, something that is already punishing enough without further nerfs to the speed.
It is absurd that in the same patch you're also buffing nurse, allowing multiple problematic addons from far stronger killers to continue reigning supreme (pick a blight one, tombstone piece etc.) yet somehow deciding to nerf the few viable options billy has with only a 54% kill rate. Please strongly reconsider reverting this change or at least buffing the base kit speed similar to what was done with Demo to offset the addon changes.
And to be very clear, it needs to compensate fully. I cannot stress this enough, billy NEEDS the speed he already has with doubles. If it's dropped to be any less, he won't be worth playing.

Listening to the professional Hillbilly players is what caused Hillbilly to be insufferable to play as for any casual player. He is just too hard to play and only hardcore experts play him. Listen instead to the rest of the community who does not play him, ask them why they don't play him. Hillbilly is like Nurse in that regard, completely insufferable to play as except you get mediocre results for your sweat. bHVR could have given him quality of life, change the power. but that would not fly.
Leather face is a much more viable and open to other players kind of Killer, but you have to pay for him.
Like have you seen the gameplay vs a Good Hillbilly? they walking back and forth revving the chainsaw around the same loop for a min and then BOOM insta-down. Its super boring and Im glad I never see a Hillbilly nor have any want to play as them. Hillbilly needs a full rework of his Power and a reduction of addons that show too high a kill rate is a good solution while we wait. Make Hillbilly fun and easier to play instead of gatekeeping him hard.
That's just how he is at this point. It's balanced, if not weak leaning. And the "kill rate of X" concept is literally the fallacy I described earlier.
There's nearly 30 killers in this game. Nurse and huntress are incredibly easy in comparison. It's not a bad thing to have a difficult killer, especially if he's easily counterable as he is now. If you remove the skill element, which is DIRECTLY tied to speed, you get a worse blight, and a much less fun one at that. Just as much as some people enjoy hiding and sneaking around, some people enjoy chase. Billy's the epitome skill interaction in chase with double engravings, and you have to invest a literal job's worth of time to get to the point where he can be considered "oppressive".
Like, he wouldn't be more fun, he's just going to be a loud wraith. Basekit movement speed billy is ungodly bad, and even at the current speed of double engravings, he's STILL really easy to keep away. It's just going to be boring at that point.

I think the thought process was:
"Billys with the highest killrate always use these addons! We should nerf them, they must be too strong"
without taking a closer look as to why they're used in the first place:
"Billys with the highest killrate always use these addons! Why? hmm, they like curving eventhough it isnt the most optimal gameplay option. It must be just that fun. Let's keep it."
Pretty sure a perfect example of survivorship bias. High performing killer, despite nerfs, still does well. Thing is though, it will continue to do so, because the only ones remaining to actually PERFORM on killer are those who are incredibly dedicated and skilled to a ridiculous degree.
-
TL;DR - Billy shouldn't be balanced around a resource mechanic, aka, overheat. It's inherently flawed as the major balancing act is the time spent revving, mindgaming, positioning, and in cooldown/bump animation which are identical. You miss a saw, you restart chase, and it's REAL easy to miss a saw even as the best person doing it.
-
@Mandy said:
I believe the acceleration after the chainsaw sprint with the engravings was a bug that was fixed recently.
That adds a massive amount of punishment for merely using your chainsaw and is effectively a SUPER hard nerf on using billy's power mid chase in a risky and high skill way. One that's already insanely punished unless you're willing to dedicate nearly hundreds, if not thousands of hours to play effectively.
Is there a dialogue that can be opened here about options that can be taken? Without some change to compensate for the bugfix's nerf, it's leaving an entire playstyle of billy high and dry.
