Fellow psych major, that's really interesting! It makes me wonder if the way we conceive of the difference between killer and survivor roles is wrong -- because I also would have predicted that low agreeableness and high neuroticism would map onto killer more readily (I say, as a person who was a killer main for the first year I played), but it seems about even.

I'd be interested to see some of the other studies you mentioned, looking at personality traits and in-game preferences, if you want to post the refs. Either way, this was a really cool project.

    Hey fellow psych major,

that is definitely something to ponder on. Since they take over several pages, I can send you the references (or in some cases the entire pdf file) via e-mail - if you're interested. There's some really interesting work on e.g. Overwatch by Greitemeyer & Delhove as well as Nick Yee (Daedalus Project, Quantic Foundry). But I'd be happy to discuss all of this further with you via e-mail if you'd like!

This was a fun read. It would have been nicer if there was a larger sample size of women to draw from, but the results are still interesting.

What conclusions can we draw from this? If I had to take a guess I would say that perhaps a solo experience as killer is more appealing to women, whom are used to teammates treating them poorly due to their gender in other games? a shot in the dark I know since this game doesn't have voice chat natively but its something to think about.

    Hey Excel,

Yes, most definitely. That's a very interesting thought!

The conclusions are all in the discussion chapter - should you be interested in having a more thorough read, I will have to come back to you since there's something I need to clarify first.

It's funny, I was reading the hypothesis and as you were describing a Killer Main, I was like: "Gee, this doesn't sound like me at all..."

The findings made me feel better. :D

    Very interesting paper.

    Thank you, Corian!

LMAO killers are more altruistic than survivors.

This is so true. So many times I play killer I straight up feel bad for SOMEONE and give them hatch or something. I never pity another survivor as survivor though, unless they were seriously bullied and/or a baby.

    Hey fox,

it's exactly the same when I'm playing killer; I somehow cannot do my job properly and start messing around with everyone. Especially when someone gets farmed off the hook or intentionally sandbagged, my inner 'mom' activates!

As a fellow researcher (albeit in a completely different field that has nothing to do with Psychology), have a vote up and let me wish you a successful career.

I will be looking for the complete paper and give it a read. Congratulations!

    Hey dirge,

thanks! what's your field of research? I'm curious!

I doubt you'll be able to find the paper, as it only exists on my and my professor's computer at the moment. I have a short meeting with him today, however, and if you're interested in having a read, I'll come back to you.

Amazing job with graduating!! This is all really, really cool, and I loved the amount of demo too! Ain't a psychology student (filthy Law, Economics, and RS a-level scrub rn) but that's really, really sick! Congrats.

Haha thanks, Karu! Best of luck on your exams, then!

  • Excuse my newbie-ness, but I don't know how to navigate in there; I can't find You - would need some additional help here.

  • @xBEATDOWNSx said:

The little Demo head in the corners. Loved it. Congrats on graduating!

Thank you very much! Yeah, I will now start trying to sneek him into other presentations at uni ...!

  • @oxygen said:

First and foremost congrats on graduating!

And that's an interesting summary as well. It's interesting in its own way when a lot of predictions turn out to not be correct, something to learn from it regardless afterall. Thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hey oxygen,

absolutely! I did not expect these findings, but this highlights the complexity of video game research; we should be cautious with gaming stereotypes. Unfortunately the discussion is quite extensive (and cannot be translated into pie charts), which is why I chose to leave it out in the interest of brevity. Apologies!

  • Hello Almo! Should there be any interest: I could forward the entire paper to You via e-mail.

    Kind regards,

    Nathalie

Cool I would have put this in Discussions though. Not really a question.

Also as someone that has experience in the game industry there are usually outside factors at play. Like someone might have enjoyed survivor more but because they didn't have any friends that play the picked killer first and just kinda went with that. Now they are a killer main, which then creates some level of bias when they play survivor. And vice versa, someone with friends might be more inclined to be a killer main but since they had friends they started with survivor and that influences the path they take through their experience with the game.

Not saying you can't draw some level of conclusion about personality or whatever just that you can never really predict how someone will react to something and the order of exposure to certain things can influence their behavior in the game. Like if you pick X character in Street Fighter you will be more inclined to hate Y character because they are a hard counter to your character, when another player doesn't have that experience and thus forms a different opinion of Y character since they are less influenced by it.

Hello there, a moderator contacted me yesterday that my post in discussions had been deleted due to it containing a draw for steam gift cards. He advised me to post it here instead. But thank you anyway!

I hope you will publish your thesis here when it's completed. I have long since thought that roles have certain personality types behind them and often say DBD seems like a massive social experiment. LOL I would love to see if your research finds this to be true. :)

I will - around mid-july, if everything goes according to plan. :)

  • @Xzan said:

Damn that was a good survey.

    Good luck further :)

Greetings from the northeastern Part or germany :D

Hey, well thank you! That put a smile on my face. Thanks! :)

    Haha, greetings from Berlin!

  • @bm33 said:

Good luck on your paper :)

    Thanks, it's quite the adventure!

    Was kinda long

And I feel like nothing related to dead by daylight...

i hope my answers didn't mess ur data up too much since my condition

Good luck with your paper tho

Thank you for taking your time to complete the survey!

  • @Doomspooge said:

Survey complete. Good luck on your paper.

Thank you & thank you! Very much appreciated.

  • @PigMainClaudette said:

Bit annoying that there wasn't really an option for BOTH/NEITHER preference on side, since I play both. If you can work out which survey data was mine, I did pick Survivor and the 3 I selected are Claudette, Yui and Kate.

For killers, I play Pig, Doctor and Legion.

Preference in playstyles could also add to the opinion of types of people drawn to the game. I prefer the stealth playstyle, rather than a confrontational runner or chase killer.

I'm sorry you weren't able to choose that option; unfortunately that's not part of the hypotheses. But thank you very much for investing your time and participating. I appreciate it a lot!

  • @Crackgear said:

I am participating in this research paper as I am a learner of psychology and bouts of human mental states.

Other than that , I love helping people.

Thank you very much! I appreciate your help a lot, thank you for participating!

  • @CLAUDETTEINABUSH said:

The survey was interesting and fun. I honestly like completing em. If you have more, please let me know!!

Thank you, I'm glad to hear that! Thank you for taking the time.

  • @Almo said:

Please post your results here when you have them. Please ping me as well, I really don't want to miss this.

Hey Almo, I will. That will probably happen around mid- to end july. I will try to arrange the results in an understandable way for everybody.

  • @Tiersis said:

Sounds cool, I'm in. Just submitted my results. Would love to see how it turns out. Keep us posted!

Thank you, much appreciated. Data analysis should be done around mid-july. I will find a good way to publish the findings.

It was a very interesting survey, I had fun doing it ๐Ÿ˜Š And no, I'm actually a graphic designer, but design practice does overlap a lot between disciplines, because the process and the way of thinking is very similar in many of ways.

Ok, I see. Thanks for clarifying! Ah, I'm glad to hear it! I did multiple testruns in advance and sometimes caught myself thinking about some questions for the millionth time ;)

  • @Fibijean said:

I'd love to help! I'm actually doing a research project myself on social dynamics in Dead by Daylight at the moment - though I'm a designer, not a psychologist - so I absolutely get the fascination from an academic standpoint. Best of luck with your thesis!

Wow, it would be interesting to hear more about that! With designer you mean game designer?

Thank you very much! I appreciate you taking the time.

  • @coppersly said:

As someone who just graduated with a Bachelors, early congratulations on being done!

I have also contributed Nurse main data, the best there is.

And late congratulations from me on already being done!

Thank you very much for that!

  • @Deadeye said:

Will you post the results here? Or a summary

I will! I have to ask for a but of patience, however. I will try to present the results in a visually more appealing and understandable way than SPSS tables :)

  • @Danu said:

Very interesting idea! I was actually going to use dbd for an altruism experiment for my bio mode at the beginning of the year to investigate influences on reciprocal altruism etc but it was only for one sf lab report, the word count was too low to explain the experiment well and it was a pair project with a friend who doesnt play dbd so I just couldn't, looking forward to seeing your results!

Thank you, I'm curious whether I'll find some evidence of value. Your experiment sounds very intruiging!

I will post the results after data analysis, that should happen around june/july.

  • @Cheers said:

Finished the servey and found it quite interesting and it even made me have to think about myself for a while on some of the questions.

Good luck with your thesis Nathalie ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thank you very much! I'm glad to hear that.

Thanks! A mountain of work ahead but it's quite the adventure.

got to 50%, got myself another coffee, tried to continue and started all over again (time out)

Well, guess I'll have to do this again :D

Good luck on your studies! I'm interested in ur results, are you going to post them here as well?

Thank you for giving it some of you time! (getting coffee is no doubt a priority though) - the plan is to present the results in a visually more appealing and understandable form than SPSS outputs!

  • @oxygen said:

Seems like an interesting study! I always find it fascinating and interesting when "traditional" fields take a look at something related to gaming, stuff like your study when it comes to psychology, or someone in the economic field taking a look at in-game economies and the like.

I answered the survey and I wish you the best of luck with your paper ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you for taking the time, I know its not the shortest of surveys! Thank you very much. I agree with you, with video games being such a big part of the lives of so many, there is so much to discover. Not just in terms of serving the "video games are bad" narrative, but in terms of gaining a profound and nuanced understanding of the uniqueness of purpose a video game might serve as for each individual.

  • @calem said:

Just left my survey answers ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I think this a super interesting idea and I am glad that the psychology behind certain video game mechanics is being studied (being a psychology student myself).

    Good luck with your thesis!

Thank you very much! :) There is a rather recent study with a pretty similar research question, but focusing on Overwatch; The Relationship Between Video Game Character Preferences and Aggressive and Prosocial Personality Traits by Martin Delhove and Tobias Greitemeyer University of Innsbruck - if you fancy a read :)
