It's shocking to me that they keep making these choices that feel horrible to their player base. It would not have made a major difference in rift completion rates to give us 25 fragments each quest, but it would feel a ton better as a player.
Simple psychology, happy players play more, spend more money. But they really don't seem to care about how their game feels to play.
My time and energy isnt being respected as a player, so I won't be spending any money. This is a repeated problem.

The lie saying it's more than last year is downright insulting.
Using weasel wording to say the amount of "guaranteed" cakes is more (because they were random before) is even more so.
Why lie straight to our faces? There's tons of gameplay footage from streamers last anniversary that proves we had many more cakes last year. It's just ridiculous.

Yes, please continue to share your thoughts here, this is crucial to the process and is really appreciated.
Just sharing my thoughts here in terms of /why/ this feels so frustrating. Being able to make a stockpile of cakes to bring throughout the year makes us play MORE, rather than less.
If there is a patch or event that feels unbalanced (which is often), tensions get high, players get sweaty. Being able to bring a cake when things get like that is a way of saying "I might get tunneled out, or chain flashlight blinded and t-bagged, but I at least got some BP". Sometimes bringing cakes even signals to the other side that you aren't there to ruin their time, but to just try to get some points and play a game. It relieves tension.
When the cakes are scarce, players wont use them as often. And instead of playing more games when things get stressful, players will just shut the game down and find something else to do.
No need to reply, I just wanted to give you a why to take back to the team, at least something more than "players want more cakes". -
Yeah it feels like they misunderstood why people love the anniversary event. The cakes /are/ the event for a lot of players, taking the numbers down this much directly affects the enjoy-ability.
This game can be very frustrating when you are on the wrong side of something unbalanced, and being able to bring a cake and say "hey well at least I got some good bp" makes things feel less serious. Taking that away from players because they don't want people "hoarding cakes" speaks to the decision makers not understanding the community at all. Having access to our earned cakes all year makes us play more, not less. -
The response is appreciated and its great that the next one will be back to the usual standards, but it doesn't really fix the issue of this one being simply not worth it.
Transparency on the front end would have been better than waiting for backlash and then going "oops". It's gonna take work to earn that trust back. -
It doesn't make any sense to me because the previous rift was so short, too. Why not extend the last one a week or two in order to equalize the lengths a little bit?
This one clearly needed more development time (Claudette's head), so why push it out half-baked and then have it run for so long? I simply don't understand the decision making happening at BHVR right now. -
Battle-passes are designed as a player retention mechanic, which is why you get your money back if you finish them. They are a game's bid to the player to say "Hey! Play our game a lot instead of another game! You'll get good stuff if you focus our game!".
BVHR needed player retention right now more than ever after all that has happened the past couple months. And this is what they put out? They think players who were thinking about leaving are going to stick around to finish this rift? This one that has significantly less value than all other rifts in the past year? They really should be embarrassed.
-
Seems like they fixed the grind problem from last rift by simply giving us nothing worth grinding for in this one. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Im just being a bit salty, but you're right. It feels like they thought we wouldn't notice it being significantly less of a value. They should be embarrassed to put this out. And as of me typing this right now, theres no milestones either. Probably a glitch, but its not a good look. -

It only seems grindy comparing two current scenarios, but if you think about either player in the old rift system, they're both benefiting from a much less grindy system.
If you play one six-hour session on Saturday or whatever ratio of hours over the weekend now, it's much less grindy than doing the same thing before, that's my point.
I do agree you get more progress playing daily. I don't necessarily mind that - online games need a regular flow of players logging in - but I do think the alternative could stand to be a lot better than it currently is.
I haven't done the math, and if you have I would love to see it because I would love to know if I'm just an outlier.
But considering the rift fragments you get from just playing a match have been almost halved, I dont see how it's less grindy, even with the easier quests. I haven't changed my playtime/style, and I always used to be able to complete the rift by finishing all the survivor quests plus a couple killer, with time to spare.
Maybe that was because of more fragment frenzies, events, or phase of the moon, but this rift was waaaay more stacked in favor of daily play than previous rifts. I played for 4 hours yesterday and not counting the dailies, I barely made it one additional tier. Thats more grindy than it has ever been, even before this new system. You are right that the quests themselves are less grindy, but theres not enough of them to make up the difference. But I think I'm just getting lost in the weeds haha. We agree on the solution for sure, any additional quests could solve this problem easy. Whether they be milestones, event, chapter, or even just a guaranteed fragment frenzy for a week.
-
The biggest issue with the most recent rift is that somebody who can log in for 10-20 minutes each day makes SIGNIFICANTLY more rift progress than somebody who plays for 6 hours straight on a Saturday night. (Assuming all weekly quests are done in both cases). That feels disrespectful of the player's time. It IS more grindy if you only have 1/2 days a week to play, even if you devote the same hours. By a wide margin. You have to play 18-20 games to equal missing 1 day of dailies.
All that said, l absolutely agree with your fixes, as progression outside of dailies is the main offender. Fixing milestones is the easiest way of making long play sessions more rewarding, but in that case I think they would need to have nearly infinite tiers so you don't run out.
And BIG BIG agree on changing the name back to rituals. It just adds to the vibe, and in a horror game, vibes matter!!
-
Full agree. Even just fixing the milestone progression and rewards would go a long way.
It would mean it's possible to grind for long play sessions on the weekend without being too punished from missing dailies.
My 8 hours of play on the weekends shouldn't be worth dramatically less than somebody else's 1-2 games a day during the week. That's ridiculous.
-
I've mentioned it on other threads, but I'll say it again. Daily play is not an option for some people, and to lock the rift behind time-gated daily quests is incredibly demoralizing.
I work in film/TV, meaning I work many 12-14 hour days. I chose this career because I love horror. I started playing Dead by Daylight because I love horror. But my job making movies/shows (one of which is currently a chapter in the game!) now locks me out of a battle pass because I don't want to log on after a 14 hour workday?
It feels straight up disrespectful.
If I want to play for 4-8 hour sessions once or twice a week instead of an hour each day, my playtime is just as valuable as somebody else's.
But if BHVR doesn't see it that way, I'll just stop spending money on the game.

This is where I'm at too. It will be the first time in a few years I haven't completed a Rift with time to spare. Not to mention the Rift Quests. I likely won't be able to finish either.
Add to that the "Complete x quests this week" quests no longer counting to the overall 40 for the banners and I'm done. That's 10 quests that would help complete but nope, they want you do do every Survivor AND Killer quest. Why are they even in the weekly quests if they don't count. That's asinine.
I won't be buying another Rift while it's like this. It demotivates playing entirely and is very frustrating. This game is NOT a job, daily grinding should NOT be required on track we've already paid for.It smells like a desperate attempt to get people to purchase levels if they want deep rift items.
This is it exactly.
I feel disrespected as a player and punished for my life schedule, even though my hours were the same as they ever were.
If there were more events or a fragment frenzy, maybe I could forgive not being able to unlock the last 2 quest rewards without playing the other side if I could at least finish the rift. But to be kept out of both when I haven't changed my playtime? Feels really bad and demotivating. -
It's ridiculous and needs to be changed. Dailies matter so much more than milestones this time, but daily play isnt an option for a lot of people.
I have a job where I work 12-14 hour days, but have multiple days off and play for long sessions when I get the chance. Ive never had a problem finishing the rifts until this one. My playtime hours are similar to what I always do, and I wont be finishing this rift (not even close). This is a direct punishment to people who work long days and would rather play on the weekends instead of daily.
Also, the change to make you have to play the other side in order to get more than 2 of the 4 rift rewards also is really frustrating. This was never the case before and makes me not want to spend any money on the game. I feel like I'm being screwed over for my playstyle, even though I'm still spending hours and hours in the game each week. Its super demotivating, and if the next one is like this, I'll probably re-evaluate how much I play altogether, as I just feel disrespected.

Coming back to this thread to confirm that, yes, the team pushed a fix for this issue today, which lowers the required quests for these cumulative quests. As an important note, you'll likely need to play one match in order for these in-game quest values to update.
This is amazing news! Thank you so much for listening and making sure it was fixed before the end of the rift. I had given up on getting the banner, so this is a wonderful surprise. <3

Created an account specifically to second this. I had just assumed, based on how tomes used to work, that you didn't need to complete every challenge in order to get the badges/banners/charm awards. The count going up the way I expected it to further corroborated this assumption, the event tomes not needing all the quests done also corroborated this assumption. This looked like a bug, so I didn't worry about it. Having support come in and tell us we needed to complete practically, if not every, challenge with less than a week to go on the rift is absurd. If I had known about this earlier, I would have played accordingly over the course of the rift.
Not to mention, folks who have already unlocked the banner before this change was made probably unlocked it ages ago. This is only affecting people who heavily skew towards one role. Really hope BHVR walks this one back for this rift and properly communicates requirements for the next one.
This is what bothers me the most too. It feels like a rug-pull to be told at the last minute that the rules have changed.
For YEARS you have been able to get the final banner or charm without playing the other side. It wasn't even necessary to complete all the quests a single side, there were always a few you could skip. And having that changed with no warning is really crappy.
-
It's happening to me too, not gaining progress. And since there's no way for me to complete all the remaining challenges without burning myself out on the game, I've just given up. I'm not waiting in long Killer queues to play more of a side I enjoy less, to grind a bunch of quests I don't find enjoyable.
Disappointing because I love the banner. In the old tomes, it was never needed to do all the quests on even one side to get the final reward. As long as you did most survivor/killer challenges, or a mix of both, you could pick the path that was the most fun for your playstyle. Now you have to complete ALL quests for both survivor and killer? Just really demotivating.
All this on top of a now necessary quest that makes it annoying for the other side and likely to get you tunneled out. (The blind the killer while they are carrying a survivor quest). Simply un-fun design.
