We actually just posted a blogpost that covers the basics (and some of the upcoming changes):

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/353291/news-upcoming-matchmaking-improvements

More specifically, when you're just starting out- including playing one of the roles for the first time- the game has no idea where you should be. The matchmaking system has a "confidence level" to represent how sure your rating is what it needs to be. When you first start playing a new role, it's low, and as a result your rating will adjust much faster than normal (your wins raise your rating more, your losses lower it more). Over time, the matchmaking system gets a better understanding of where you should be and the confidence level starts to increase and your rating adjusts less after each match.

It's possible you won a few matches and your rating increased quickly, but it should adjust to a place where you're averaging 2 kills per match pretty soon.

    Thanks for the info

Just to break it down, when you first play a new killer character you start at a below average rating (I don’t know the number but something like 600-800 where the average is 1000 I think). If you kill someone your rating goes up, and if they escape out the gate it goes down. (I think hatches are neutral but I’m not 100% positive.) The higher the rating of the person you kill the more your rating goes up, and the higher the rating of someone who escapes the more your rating goes down. Also the devs said something about the first kill being worth more than the second and third because the system assumes that once one survivor dies it’s easier to kill others. Finally initially your rating goes up or down more to try and get you closer to your approximate accurate bracket quickly and then after a few games it settles down to smaller fluctuations.

The devs also announced this month that they’re adjusting that system so rather than your MMR going up or down every kill and escape it will go up or down based on how many survivors escape as a whole. That way if one survivor runs a killer all game and helps everybody else get out then all the survivors go up in ratings including the runner. It’s a step toward treating the survivors as an actual team for purposes of winning or losing (which is good in my opinion!)

Note that the rating systems is pretty decent, if everybody’s MMR is close the game tends to be close. But the matchmaking algorithm sometimes ignores MMR altogether in the interest of time when there’s nobody available in a given player’s range for a match or when someone dodges a lobby in progress. A lot of mismatches have to do with that time constraint as well as swfs whose members are widely disparate ratings.

Interesting. Just had 3 games as deathslinger and got 3 very hard fought 4ks so im lost. My first few games today i was getting destroyed not even close and that last 3 were very difficult but i managed the 4k.

So im not sure where that puts me.

    Thanks for the answers guys

  • Oh lovely. So im going to have a real hard time learning killer then. Thats good to hear lol. Is mmr based on player or killer?

So ive used trapper and the executioner the most as for whatever reason them and the pig gives me the most dailys. Would i maybe have a better chance trying someone new?

  • Well i mean some of the players im coming across are like lvl 40 odd prestige and that. Just had a game with a lvl 40 dwight and lvl 46 jill. I know prestige doesnt mean how good they are but Theyve very clearly put there time in and they were making very good survivor moves good body blocks, looping was exceptional that was the whole team too.

  • Im having alot of fun in soloq at the moment.

Tbh its the only way i play now as my friends all stopped playing about 6 months ago. But right after the 'changes' it was near impossible to survive. Now its different as you learn to adapt. Im currently maybe escaping 40% of the time which i am extremely happy about as an average skilled player. I find now you just have to bring a more selfish build into soloq.

I run overcome, windows of op, deliverance and resiliance as my basic loadout usually paired with a yellow medkit. Overcome to get distance, windows to find the next loop, deliverance to save myself from hook as sometimes you just get left there and resiliance to boost my over all action speed. I find this loadout very good for soloq. This is the first time in the 2 years ive played ive actually made it to iridescent 1 so there is no way the game is still as badly killer favoured as it was when the 'changes' first got released. I think the curve has clearly evened out now.

Tbh overcome is my new favourite perk. Its honestly great. Lots of killers drop chase when they see the distance you get so it often gives you time to use the medkit you bring.

    swf or solo?

A lot of players play killer now because its the way easier role now, so there are more inexperienced killers out there. But that doesnt help if most games turn into a 3v1 by themself.

Solo. Used to play in a 3 man but they gave up the game a good while ago but i love it so i just keep playing.

I don't mind solo queue. I tend to not get as frustrsted at random teammates than i do as a swf as i expect better haha.

  • Well before this update and having shared perks on everyone i only had all perks on claudette, leon and jill so ill say them.

Ive started using others alot more now because i can.

Does anyone run certain perks on certain survivors? Before update i had a power struggle jill (unbreak, flip flop, tenacity, power struggle) hella fun way to play but you die alot.

Leon was my try hard dead hard, windows, resilience and spine chill/live forever for bp boost.

And finally claudette was my saviour build (borrowed, botany, this is not happening and i cant remember the name the last one. Gives you speed increase to healing and unhooking.

  • I play solo constantly and ive been having a great time.

Personally if im other side map doing the objective id be finishing the gen/totem before trying to run for a save.

Yeah one was on hook and one slugged but if your other side of the map your going to assume in most cases another survivor will be going for the save.

Seems like you and your friends are the problem. Yeah altruism but unhooking in front of the killer/ going for save injured in front of the killer aint a good idea. Seemed you guys needed to run away reset and try again instead of dropping like flies while moaning at the solo queuer.

  • Im happy with survivor at the moment. First time in 2 years ive actually made the red ranks. So im either getting better or killers are getting worse.

  • Ive been getting a mixed bag. Some survivors ive been getting have been excellent where as some have been horrible.

When the patch first came out i was getting nothing but hopeless teammates but now a few weeks in it seems to have sorted itself out and im getting more capable teammates.

Played a good 8 hours sunday night when i was staying up to sleep through the day for nightshift at work and i would say i escaped maybe just shy of half the time which id think is pretty good.

  • Honestly as a survivor main i dont think its that bad.

Im hideously average but gen speeds are hardly noticable. The killer buffs make not too much odds.

The only thing im noticing is my solo queue teammates seem to be a bit lacking. I was wondering if the tweaked the mmr.

I dont mind dying in game as long as im having fun. We dont need to escape all the time to have fun.

  • @Remedicist said:

Did Blight hit you with his power attack? Because exposed survivors only get one hit down by basic attacks.

Oh maybe. Not 100% sure. Thats maybe what happened. Cheers.

  • @Devilishly_Rowdy said:

Already getting survivors giving up by just standing at the hook asking to be hooked again. Even though i'm not camping or tunneling one bit. Survivors wanna be the power role so bad, and now they can feel their control slipping, so they just give up.

I was wondering if they have also tweaked the mmr a little bit. I mostly just play survivor and the amount of games i had last night where youve taken the killer on a decent run get downed and have a look around at what your teammates are doing and they are doing nothing is super frustrating.

Im gold 3 at the moment so you would think you would get paired with people similar to level you are at/similsr skill level but it was like a was playing with brand new players last night.

From a survivor stand point i dont think the changes are bad at all playwise. Hardly notice the generator changes what is it? An extra 10 seconds? Its barely noticable. Couldnt tell you about the perk updates though as ive been running the tenacity, power struggle, flip flop, unbreakable build for weeks now cause its so fun.

You're not going to lose any perks. I didnt mention it in my post but the prestige levels you get after the update drops won't remove any items addons or perks, and of course neither will prestiging after the update, since it is mandatory. That's the whole point of this prestige rework on top of giving Tier Perks based on prestige.

Either way, find out which killer has the perks you like most and try to get them to P1 before the update drops tomorrow, and you'll get all their perks P3 on everyone thanks to the catchup mechanic giving you 2 extra prestiges as long as you have P1.

Ahh. Excellent. Feel much better now. Least now the grind feels like it was still worth it.

    Thanks for the info

  • @MrMori said:

So much conflicting bullshit this thread. Here's what prestige you'll get.

For every current prestige, you'll get TWO prestige levels. AKA:

    P1 -> P3

    P2 -> P6

    P3 -> P9

P9 is the cap, and you cannot go above it, even with P3 + all perks.

If you haven't already reached P3 which puts you at the cap, you'll also gain prestiges based on how many perk tiers you have.

    • 1 level for 70-119 Perks
    • 2 levels for 120-169 Perks
    • 3 levels for 170-219 Perks
    • 4 levels for 220-269 Perks
    • 5 levels for 270-319 Perks
    • 6 levels for 320+ Perks

A full page of purple for example, is 45 perk tiers. Full page of green is 30.

Finally, you will keep your current level after the rework, so you could simply wait for your perk based level reward, and prestige right after the update.

    SHORT ANSWER:

To answer your ultimate question: If you have a character you don't care about at level 50, whether you should prestige or not depends on their perk tiers. If they have 120 or more perk tiers, simply wait and you'll automatically get P2L50, then you can just level from P2L50 to P3L1 without losing anything.

The easiest solution is to prestige all characters you don't care about to P1L1. They'll get bumped right up to P3L1 after the update, and you'll get all their Tier 3 perks, no questions asked. But you'll of course lose you addons/perks/offerings on that character, if you have any you care about. This is what I'd recommend if you don't havemany perks on a character.

If you're sitting at Level 40 with no prestige, definitely go for P1L1, since you'd get literally nothing for them otherwise and its only about 400k BP.

July dev update details the updated catchup mechanic.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/kb/articles/340-6-1-0-ptb

PTB patch notes show amount of perk tiers needed per prestige. Note that the PTB giving players prestige 11-12 was before the changes to catchup detailed in the july dev update

Im so frustrated by the new update. I mostly play survivor so i think i just need 2 more people to prestige to lvl one before the update which is doable for me. But ive recently picked up playing some killer just unlocked all the teachables bar the dredge ones and taught them to pyramid head as id like to use him and now ill lose all those perks as i dont have any killer p1. So frustrating.

  • Question with this update will i lose all teachable perks i have already unlocked if i dont have all my survivors at least prestige 1?

    Anyone know?

HA, HAHA... the killer running BLOOD WARDEN...😂😂😂😂, What a joke

I actually got blood wardened last week. First time in ages.

  • @Pumpkinbros said:

I've seen this as an issue for both survivors and killers, for survivors they can loop victor for hours and receive no blood points from what is objectively a more difficult chase to deal with. As a killer I have a challenge in the new Tome: Devotion to chase someone right after Hoarder activates, so I did, but as Victor. and so my chase didn't count and I can not be more frustrated. I understand that technically Charlotte is the killer NOT victor, however since victor is doing the majority of the work, the bp categories gotta count the same way, for at least chases which is the ONE thing he does

not trying to sound aggressive, I think this just makes sense and should be updated

thanks, love you dev team <33

I just figured this out last night. Bit late to the new tome and on the chased for irredesent charm 3 times.

Looped a twins for 4 gens almost then got out without a hook but only got gold and i can only assume its because viktor doesnt count. Im annoyed because its probably the best ive ever played as im hideously average and it didnt count haha.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/233921/noed-is-so-infuriating

"the minute one was taken off hook she would go straight for the injured one"

Why do people complain about this like it isn't the super obvious and intelligent thing to do in that situation?

I try to avoid doing that if possible as killer (unless of like rift challenges like the hillbillys down 4 survivors with the chainsaw where its smart to kind of camp hooks to a degree) but i like a bit more of a challenge so like to try and evenly go from one survivor to the other.

ive only been heavy playing this game for the last few months so i think the highest my killer rank has ever been is 14 and my survivor rank is 9. Im a hideously average at best player and feel like i could probably get more kills if i ran noed but i dont see the fun in it so refuse to play it as the fun in killer for me is the chase and testing my abilities.

Noed to me is like rewarding bad killers for bad gameplay. Of course it doesnt always play out that way and by the end of the game it doesnt make an ounce of difference like in the ops description of his game.

There is nothing i hate more as a survivor is seeing a a game where the killers doing not too bad but gens are getting done. You get the last gen done then all of a sudden its insta downs all round. Sucks the fun out of the end game for me personally.
