    updated first post.

    our work here is done.

ladies, gentlemen, it's been an honor.

go out there and play some DbD.

Thanks for keeping the post updated! The 2 years flew by lol.

It is now official. We had to wait for verification processes to be confirmed, it's not as straight forward as might initially appear.

Finally this has become a reality, believe me we're all happy about this and that we're finally have DbD on Steam Deck.

Thanks Mandy! Have a great rest of your week.

Nobody knows because BHVR refuse to tell us anything. It does seem like it's BHVR that needs to fix/enable it.

The CM is out of the office. They will probably reply to Niko's @'s when they get around to it.

Even if we get the same response as before, I image we are close to getting Steam Deck support. The UI changes are already in-place for Steam Deck.

Hhmmm... Got into a game. Walked a few steps thinking 'O damn!' then got booted. Now getting locked. Great now we can't test it....

The disconnect probably counts as dodging a match. I wouldn't try matchmaking more than once per day.

  • The fact that the game ran on the Steam Deck for a day probably means they are close to officially announcing support. I am still hopeful.

I don't see the Steam Deck buttons in the main menu UI, what does it look like?

    I took a pic

It just shows like the menu button and the other button. Similar to this picture. Other buttons look like the regular xbox ABXY etc.

  • I just played an entire multiplayer game on the Steam Deck through Steam. I did use ProtonGE, but I don't know if it is necessary. Just make sure you have "Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime" installed in your Steam Library under the tools section.

There are also Steam Deck buttons used in the main menu UI, so they might officially announce Steam Deck support soon.

Ah! That's crazy. For me I don't get a 500 error on live matches, just a generic "disconnected" message. That's great to hear though, I assumed there was still some server sided thing that needed to be enabled to join live matches but it seems we're even closer to being able to play if it's just a client issue. I was expecting to get a ton of bot match practice in before actually getting to earn BP again.

I can confirm. I went into Desktop mode on the Steam Deck and installed the "Proton Runtime" under the tools group in my Steam Library. I now no longer get the "EAC failed to initialize" message when launching the game. I can join online lobbies and ready up but once the game starts I get a generic "disconnected" message. I am not going to do anymore online testing because I don't want to mess with peoples lobbies.

Side note: I did notice some small stuttering here and there. It might be shader compilation.

They promised support and have choose to give zero updates to their paying customers, Is that not toxic? I'm not saying being toxic over a game is right, not in the slightest. But they haven't exactly painted themselves in the best colour, never mind Linux users.

    Keeping us updated??!?!?

To get any response you have to tag the community manager? even then the response is "NOTHING". Bearing in mind it's their jobs to read the forums/social media and give updates, to communicate. You class having to manually tag them to get ANY response "updating us"?

I appreciate they're people and probably have their hands tied, they might even want the same features we've waited for. But that doesn't excuse the lie they told. O wait it's not a lie, they're hiding behind the 'We didn't say when' BS 🙄

Nah what you just got was a red tape response which translates to "We have another broken AF killer to release (Coming from a Nurse main!) and money to make before we bother supporting a platform our current players politely waited for after being told, YES we'll support it"

Means absolutely nothing but I'm uninstalling on console (which is awful BTW!) and just playing other games at this point. What a slap in the face.

    lol

you too, and sorry I do not have more news. As soon as I do get some (and this is something that I check in with the team about regularly), I will share it.

    Thanks for keeping us updated!

Hello everyone, this is my first post in the DBD forum so sorry if I make any mistakes.

But basically, just like all of you, I would really want dead by daylight to be playable on the Steam Deck. I had the idea of submitting a request to BHVR regarding Steam Deck compatibility because I thought that was the best way to have my voice reached. I don't know if submitting a request is a good idea but I think that we all should submit one to increase the pressure and hopefully be listened. I did got an answer fairly quickly from the support team, though obviously they don't have any power, at least they told me that they were going to "forward" the request to the team. Here is both my request and the support team response (I really tried to sound as respectful and serious as possible lol):

"Hi BHVR team, hope you are having a wonderful day.

First of all, I will start this request by saying that I love this game (almost 1,000 hours on it), and have been pretty happy with the recent updates. I wanted to submit this request however, regarding the compatibility in Dead By Daylight on the Steam Deck. As you may know, the Steam Deck is already reaching millions of users who have been looking to play their favorite Steam and PC games in a handheld device, especially for those who travel or move around a lot, including myself. Lately, almost all games on Steam and PC have been completely compatible and playable for Steam Deck users, however, I have noticed that Dead By Daylight has fallen behind on this trend and you can't even load into the lobby on the Steam Deck. I can imagine that many people have been looking to play DBD on the Steam Deck but are very frustrated just like me, in fact, there are many discussions here just like this one (https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/282110/eac-on-steam-deck-proton-linux) regarding Steam Deck compatibility, and as you can see, people comment on this discussion almost daily demanding at least some answers from the BHVR team and proving that many people are expecting answers from you. I believe that we as consumers deserve at least to be listen and that's why I'm making this request. Also, I'm very frustrated from the fact that almost all games have released updates for Steam Deck compatibility, but BHVR has seemed to forgot about it since they mentioned it a while ago. I'm looking forward to play one my favorite games on the Steam Deck anytime soon; or at least have some news about the topic.

    Sincerely,

    Jorge H. (Steam ID = Jorge6345)"

    "Hello there!

I'm Caden from Dead by Daylight Support! I hope you are doing well!

Thank you for taking the time writing to us about your concern for Dead by Daylight!

I've carefully read your message and I'd like to thank you for sharing your feelings about Dead by Daylight's ompatibility for Steam Deck.

I understand that you love to play the game, and that you want to play wherever you go with the handheld device. I'd like to thank you for your feedback on this.

In regards to a status update about the Steam Deck compatibility, I would like to let you know that we currently have no information to share on this from the Support Team. However I have taken note of your concern and have forwarded this so that it can be noticed and further looked into. While this is the case, I am not able to inform you as to when the team may have an update on this. Thank you for your understanding. One thing we can promise however, is that we will continue to work hard to improve the players' gaming experience.

For future updates, you may check out our official DBD Forums or BHVR Twitter as well.

We sincerely hope you to continue being a part of the Dead by Daylight community!

In case you encounter any issues, have any questions, or simply want to share your opinion and feedback, please feel free let us know! We're always happy to hear from our players!

    Take care in The Fog!

    Caden"

Thank you for sending a respectful request. Topics surrounding Linux gaming can get a little toxic at times.

Oh ######### so basically their servers don’t check at all if people catch packets and modify and send modified packets back? Oh damn that’s not great at all. No wonder stuff is going all over.

That's not really the real problem.

Put simply, Dead by Daylight was originally a peer-to-peer game. This means that in older versions of the game, one of the 5 players in a match (including the killer) hosted the game lobby from their computer. This saves money for the developer by offloading the cost of running servers to the players. The problem with peer-to-peer games is that the server host has the keys to the kingdom. If they are hacking, they can do whatever they want to the other players because they "own" the server.

A few years ago, DBD was updated and now uses dedicated servers. There are various benefits to this, such as better average ping for players, more secure gameplay, etc.

The REAL problem is that some core gameplay code is still using a peer-to-peer style of programming. If you YouTube "DBD hackers", you will see that many hackers can do things such as fly around the map, teleport through walls, damage players across the map, bring super powerful items, have multiple killer weapons, etc. Most, if not all, of those hacks are simply not possible if programmed correctly for dedicated servers. Search YouTube for CS:GO hackers. Notice how all CS:GO hacks are AIM/Wallhack related? There is not a CS:GO hack that lets you fly around the map in an official competitive game. Some hacks are hard to detect because they are purely client side (Aim hacking for example).

EAC is basically a really poor bandaid to a fundamental code issue. I am sure the developers know how to fix these issues, but it likely just isn't a priority. They make more money adding features than maintaining older code.

TL;DR A lot of DBD hacks should not be possible. EAC is a bandaid for old, broken code.

  • @Vage said:

IMHO, the fact is: enabling Steam Deck and Linux support aren't a priority for them.

That's because this will not bring new sales. Who owns a Steam Deck is (most of the time) someone that already own the game on Steam, probably with all the DLC and stuff. The Nintendo Switch is a proprietary solution and bringing the game there, for example, equal to new sales.

This doesn't mean that it will not be enabled in future, but is not a priority actually for the devs.

This is just my idea about it, I can also be wrong. I also hope that It will be implemented soon, but i don't think so.

I don't play anymore, but my gf did, and this game Is the only reason stopping me from removing Windows and install Linux actually.

    Cheers.

While I would have agreed with this mentality in the past, the Linux gaming scene has changed completely over the last couple years.

In the past, developers had to make game builds specifically for Linux. This would result in hundreds of bugs that would cost precious developer time and lots of money to fix and maintain.

Nowadays, everything can run through the proton compatibility layer. If a game has a problem on Linux, a bug report can be created on the Proton github page and will be addressed by a developer at some point. The only thing holding DBD back from Linux is its anti-cheat, East Anti Cheat. EAC has been updated to support Linux/Proton, requiring the developer to enable the feature on their end for it to work. It is possible that there exists a major conflict with Behaviour's existing codebase and EAC Proton support. But with no official communications from the developer, we have nothing but speculation.

tl;dr Enable proton support, Linux community will fix bugs running game. Any developer communication would be appreciated.

We said it would come in the future, we did not give an ETA for Steam Deck and we specifically said it would not be at launch. When we have an ETA for when this will be implemented we will be sure to communicate that, until then, there is no information I'm afraid.

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date Mandy. It is frustrating that the devs don't have any new information. For those out of the loop, Steam Deck support was confirmed 9 months ago. They said that the Steam deck would not be supported at launch, but the launch was back in late February. There have been hints of Steam Deck support in a few updates. Primarily in the form of an EAC library file, but nothing else since. Its understandable that other dev work is more important that adding Steam Deck support, but the silence is deafening.

  • Bump. Still unable to play DBD on my Steamdeck and PC.

  • Maybe some SteamDeck news around the 6th anniversary update? 😁 The devs have to be close to enabling EAC for Linux. They added some of the files required for Linux a couple of updates back.

  • This is literally the only thing preventing me from running linux full time.
