Every morning I wake up and think, maybe today is the day we get an update.
Then I load up this forum to see the stone dead silence and I honestly don't know why I expect anything more.
*Insert crickets chirping*
Looking at all the other bugs and problems in game, I feel like Linux has just been pushed to the back of the room.
In the cold dark damp corner.
Like Wheezy from toy story.
But it worked damn it! It worked! π π€£

Yeah, I want to stay optimistic and say it's right around the corner. The UI changes do tell me this will happen, at least for Steam Deck. I just hope they don't shut the rest of us out. As long as we can pass EAC, just let us play and spend money. XD
O god I hope not.
They'll add a check to make sure it only works on Steam OS! π€£π

and the solution for steam version is ... an update of devs on steam version or is EAC, what solution, please ...
Nobody knows because BHVR refuse to tell us anything. It does seem like it's BHVR that needs to fix/enable it.

what res are you playing at? just curious.
Only 1080p. I run so much other software at the same time, OBS, Audio Mixer etc.
Normally record too, so I'm surprised it hasn't melted tbh π€£

dbd on linux run better than windows? what windows u try? win 7?
Windows 10 and 11. Linux version ran better than both for me. Noticeably smoother. But Linux in general has less overhead than Windows does.
for reference my system is a 2700x, 32gb ram, 2060. So low end ish. Not a gaming beast but decent enough. Solid 120 fps after unlocking.

FOV is an accessibility feature in any normal video game. It should not be gated by a perk, the end.
People here arguing about killer vision and game balance, as though that should somehow take precedence over actuial game accessibility. Get real. You'll adapt to it. I've seen some players who literally cannot play any killer without Shadowborn because it gives them motion sickness.
the game would need to be completely redesigned and balanced and have you seen how long bugs last?
The game is balanced around that game play DESIGN! it's not an accessibility feature! The perk should be removed and you should play it the way it was designed! Or make the perk a game filter/ reshade to see in the dark.
That's why thousands enjoy the game. You're asking to be able to see more because the outcome of most Killer games you play is not what you like. Learn the mechanics and get better. Stop hiding behind any excuse your finger nails can hold on to!
-
The sad thing is they probably don't even read this thread. Looks that way to me.
The CM offers nothing and the Mods claim we're being disrespectful or tell us to stop tagging devs. Baring in mind we're paying customers. Neither mention that they're going to ask the higher ups and get back to us. We get a red tape copy+paste response.
Like is this image they want? Certainly seems like they're trying to look like the villain.
How not to run a game company from top to bottom...
If the game didn't run flawlessly I'd see the point. But it legitimately runs better than Windows π€£. Honestly this whole scenario is absolutely bonkers. Legit, that insane... it's funny!
I put time in to bake this cake. Look at my cake! taste the crumbs. That's a nice cake. I could sell this cake to make money like I planned. but you know what. I'm putting the cake in the fridge and leaving it rot. π€£
-
Shadowborn should not be base kit at all. FOV is not a fundamental 'feature', it's literally limited by design.
You're playing a hide and seek game and are basically asking for it to be easier to find people. But flashlights... A poor counter, they would have to increase the angle at which you could blind. Which will result in flashlights working from the most ridiculous angles. Have fun trying balancing that.
The game is balanced around killers having limited FOV. Almost every perk and mechanic in some way is designed with that as a fundamental gameplay design.
How easy do you want the game to be? Let's give Blight or Nurse 110 FOV.....
Every Killer seeing scratch marks they'd otherwise of missed from ridiculous angles.
Survivors with increased FOV hiding and looping tall structures, being able to see the red stain seconds sooner...
Just because other games have FOV sliders doesn't in anyway mean DBD should. If anything it would be easier to make an argument of it being redesigned or removed.
-
Come on man just give us something.
Tell us you won't support it until an official announcement but just turn it back on and let those that can play. Play.
We'll take on the support role and try help other players... π
-
If anything performance is better for me on Linux. (When they let us play!)
-
Like Nikodemo suggested, join our thread.
Just for anyone else that sees this, it was playable. We had several players playing it on steam deck and Linux. On both Epic and Steam for several days without issues.
But it got 'disabled' without any reason or explanation. There's no obvious reason why it's not playable right now other than they said no.
-
@nikodemo said:
oh, and just so it's said, it ran way better than it does on Windows. XD
I only came across one issue, which was this graphical error in the header of the anniversary items:
Game breaking! Shut it down! Scrap it all! DELETE IT! not working! not worth the time! Don't say a word and forget it all! π π€£
-
Still not a single word from the CM or devs.
Just tested the current state of affairs and getting disconnected from bot games. Now back to the original disconnecting before even joining multiplayer matches.
Can we somehow send some coffee and 5 hour energy to the poor developer (Singular) that's been lumped with Linux support π€£.
I've seen some poor game companies in my time, I played Ark and dealt with Wildcard for 5+ years π‘. But Honestly this is putting BHVR right up there with the worst in the industry. No communication, Bugs here, there and everywhere on every platform. Forum looks like it's ran by 3 people who refuse to step outside their job descriptions (why would they when the hats above leave them in the firing line). Have the public image of prefering to release broken Killers/Perks without little care of the current player views. Just to make a few quid
The game works..... It works..... Just let us play. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this has been purposely disabled.
This smells like a marketing scenario where they've disabled it to announce next week 'It's here! in paid partnership with Raid Shadow Legends!'
-
Yeah until now it never did. You would be kicked before joining the match server so you wouldn't be classed as dc'ing. Which meant you could test different setups.
Maybe this is them making progress? Crazy timing that it's now doing this after I joked about queuing as Killer earlier. π
-
Hhmmm... Got into a game. Walked a few steps thinking 'O damn!' then got booted. Now getting locked. Great now we can't test it....
-
:( Same here.... Only my 'Friends' are in discord shouting at me, calling me a lemon. Trying to make me install Windows. π
Would rather put up with another year of waiting tbh.
-
Damn excitement got the better of me too :P Should of thought they'd take away our toys.
I'm currently testing different Proton/EAC combos. I feel sorry for the Survivors getting booted before games since I'm queuing as Killer. Sounds like a great way to protest tbh π€£

The fact that the game ran on the Steam Deck for a day probably means they are close to officially announcing support. I am still hopeful.
I hope so.... But not holding my breath. Bought the rift pass and 2 DLC's yesterday.
I'm betting it gets enabled again the day after the rift ends π€£. What's the refund policy on DLC? (joking obviously, shame you have to clarify lol)

We don't support Steam Deck yet, but we'd like to! We have no ETA currently. Please keep an eye on official channels for announcements on progress when SteamDeck support is available!
What type of response is that? Yes you haven't said you support it, Sure. In fact nobody has said anything. About EAC, About Epic, About the steam client working yesterday and then being suddenly disabled.
We've had it working on multiple clients FLAWLESSLY! On Steamdeck, Native Arch and several Linux distros with zero issues. I have about 12 hours of footage from a stream showing people. On the Steam client alone. about 30 hours if you factor in the Epic client.
Saying you don't support it I get, but the game works! like fully works without an issue. How can you have a working game with no ETA? You haven't had updates on any official channels for over a year. Apart from that red tape response we've seen about 50 times.
We've beta tested it already. Stop hitting the kill switch and let us play
-
Yeap same here disconnecting from a bot lobby too.
Swear I had an update before launching the game this afternoon that said EAC setup. Looks like they've disabled it again server side.
Anyone still have heroic version installed able to check if that still works?
-
Nah it was exciting.... Now it's just sad.
Not even a post to say 'Sorry, we've found some issues and disabled it while we fix them'.
-
Wow they really disabled it again! Bought more DLC last night and uninstalled the heroic version too!
Honestly amazing! /clap
And typical the CM is out of the office! genuinely disgusting customer service.
Rizzo can we talk about this respect thing again mate?!

I've removed all the tinkering and it just works.
Yeap! Thank you devs! took way too long. But I can finally play on my main account!
-
Yeah I can confirm I just loaded into a game without needing to do anything. proton 41 no need for TKG.
I had an EAC update on first loading steam. Looks like the devs have fixed it.
No launch parameters. no fancy tweaks. just loaded in

Would you be able to explain the steps you did to run it. Did you build Proton TKG from source etc?
Nikodemo will probably update the OP.

Alright, I gave it a go and it worked on my side. I was able to play a full match on Steam with no EAC errors using Proton TKG.
Just to clarify a full multiplayer match? You've been able to play against bots and do the tutorials for a while.

New update is still working. No problems so far.
This using the Heroic launcher?
Edit: Getting disconnected from steam like Siylph wrote.
-
Does dlc transfer over? Not a chance I'm buying them again.
They're aiming to get the cross progress tool back up by THE END OF THE YEAR! π€¦π»ββοΈπ€£
I'd say they'll have the Steam client fixed by then but honestly who knows.
π€£π You have to laugh at this point. If my friends played any other multiplayer game I would of just left.
-
@ScoobyDoo said:
When you guys say that you can play it via the Epic Games do you mean that you play on a different account than the Steam one? The progression, characters and all that stuff isn't shared between Epic Games and Steam, right?
Yeah a different account, You can merge progress using the tool online between steam and epic. But in typical BHVR style the tool has been down since JULY!
-
@Tiixxel said:
Can confirm that the EGS version works with EAC. Can play on both my Steam Deck and Desktop, although it is a hit or miss and sometimes it will error on the inintial loading screen, sometimes it won't and just work perfectly fine.
Did you use one of the methods posted in here? I had one error while logging back in this evening. Restarted the client and logged back in fine. Same for you?
Edit: Didn't have any errors yesterday, Only tonight after unlocking FPS. You haven't unlocked too have you?
-
Yeah it's a shame it's currently EGS only, I'll switch to Steam the second it's possible but just being able to play at all is a win π€£
When you update the original post could you please mention what Gustash wrote, that it's not supported and could break at any time.
Would it also be worth suggesting using a fresh throw away account? I've not worked much with EAC and not sure what it checks or bans for. Id hate anyone that does play on Epic as their main platform to get a ban and lose all their progress/skins/dlc. I see no reason why they would it's not like the runtime/game files has been altered in anyway, but just a precaution. Again an official update would go down a treat ππ

@nikodemo said:
let's just be careful with our verbiage so that we don't give wrong impressions or soundbites are taken out of context.
there's currently a workaround that shows DbD can work just fine on Linux for those who use the Epic Game Store version.
for native Steam and simple "install and play," we're still looking for EAC configuration issues to be resolved on BHVR side.
but it's clear, with video evidence, the game works fine once EAC issues are resolved.
so we hope BHVR will take the small amount of time needed to resolve this simple yet show-stopping issue.
I understand what you're saying and why but the game DOES work. I've played it for two days none stop and the only issue I've come across is incorrectly lit basements.
I think we can safely say it works as long as we make sure people know it requires manual setup. Also that BHVR refuse to comment on the work around so anyone doing the same will do so at there own risk. Most people will need a throw away account anyway as it's on Epic and typically the account merge feature is down π€¨.
At this point it's pretty fair to think that BHVR could enable this officially on steam at any point and are choosing not to. Maybe it's a security issue? Maybe not. Either way I'll keep playing until they patch it or officially release the steam version.

@Pyc said:
what work? steam version doesn't work...
Read through the previous page. It works with some setup using Heroic launcher (Epic Games Store client) 2 ways to setup, one with just Heroic and another using Heroic Bash Launcher.
-
@StrainedSky said:
Well its working : Dead by Daylight | Steam Deck Showcase | Linux - YouTube
can I ask what method you used to make it work? steam runtime etc?
-
Just in case people don't realize, you can play the game with ZERO issues on Heroic via the method others and I mentioned.
As in full game, Multiplayer matches.
I've been playing for 6 ish hours and had no issues at all. A basement was lit incorrectly on one map, which happens on windows.
I see zero reasons why Steam shouldn't be playable now, it's using the steam EAC runtime lol.
An update from someone official would go down a treat.

@nikodemo said:
what's your youtube? Mandy can show it to the devs as a proof of concept in the wild.
Youtube Alex the Absolute Length, I've not read the rules on posting the link or advertising so I don't want to link it π . Just streaming it to show it's possible.
-
@nikodemo said:
barring any issue of spaces or capitals, why would this work for Heroic and not just in Steam itself?
i've tried pointing to the Proton EAC directory. I've tried copying over the files from that directory directly into the DbD folder. but none of that works.
still, it's good to note that it can and is working for some people, which means that it can be done and with relative ease as long as EAC is configured correctly.
note this progress, @Mandy , for the team.
I don't have much experience with anti cheat and only have limited experience with game development. but the fact it works on Epic but not Steam with the Steam runtime is baffling. Still playing and streaming to Youtube since I posted that the games working. It's running flawlessly too. Zero issues, this feels like such a simple fix it's frustrating that we're getting zero updates when people are willing to help.

would you please post your exact environment variable? is it just:
PROTON_EAC_RUNTIME PATH/TO/STEAM/PROTON_RUNTIME
?
Mine is
PROTON_EAC_RUNTIME = /home/*USER*/Games/Heroic/Proton_EasyAntiCheat_Runtime
Because I copied the steam runtime to my Heroic folder. Yours will have to point to where you put the steam runtime. I'm not sure if you can use it from the steam folder. I had issues with the spaces so just moved it instead

Another confirmation:
It works with Heroic. Playing DBD on Nobara in 2022 who would have thought. Lets see how long this lasts.
Shows it works! just need them to sort steam now! Actually have some hope now π€£π€
-
Can confirm what Gustash and 20percent have said.
Just been playing a few games via Epic Games Client using the Heroic Launcher. Was able to join and play normally π€―π
Steps I used.
In the game directory copy the EasyAntiCheat folder to DeadByDaylight/Binaries/EGS/
Download Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime on STEAM. Copy the "Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime" folder to any directory and remove the spaces in the folder name
In Heroic Launcher go to DBD game settings.
Set Wine version to Proton-GE-Proton7-41 (not tested others).
make sure EasyAntiCheat Runtime is UNCHECKED.
Then added this Environment Variable
name: PROTON_EAC_RUNTIME value: PATH/TO/STEAM/PROTON_RUNTIME
(the folder without spaces example: /home/*USER*/Games/Heroic/Proton_EasyAntiCheat_Runtime)
EDIT: FPS can be unlocked by changing the Engine.ini and GameUserSetting.ini inside the pfx directory.
launch from Heroic Launcher and Enjoy.
Heroic Bash Launcher doesn't seem to want to find my Heroic install so feel like this is a clunky way of getting it working. but playing games as we speak. Of course all my progress and dlc is on steam and the cross platform merge is currently unavailable! π€¦ββοΈ but I'll take it as a win for now considering there is still ZERO communication from the people in charge
-

Sadly it stopped working form me like 3 hours ago, is anyone having the same problem?
I'm still able to get to the menu etc. Still kicked when trying to join a multiplayer game. Tutorials work perfectly fine everything seems stable. Experimental Proton Arch linux (not steamdeck) Error 500
-
lol? Want to explain this?
I stand by everything I wrote, if you think that's toxic you should keep off the internet and protect your soul.
Not everyone is a raging 10 year old. Text can be typed in more ways than just angrily smashing a keyboard.
Not toxic, fed up is the term I'd use. After finally seeing a CM post, you get told 'nah, dunno, got nothing for ya'. That's not an update, which isn't the CMs fault, that's BHVR showing they probably drip feed them information too.
Is getting an actual update like 'We are still working on it, it is still coming', 'We're sorry but we're unable to do it' or 'Not enough players are interested so it's a waste of resources' too much to ask for? No instead we're left in limbo with literally no information and support telling you 'If enough players show interest'.
But hey we can always just tag people and say 'Lol' and offer nothing. The silver lining is it bumps the thread π

Thanks for keeping us updated!
Keeping us updated??!?!?
To get any response you have to tag the community manager? even then the response is "NOTHING". Bearing in mind it's their jobs to read the forums/social media and give updates, to communicate. You class having to manually tag them to get ANY response "updating us"?
I appreciate they're people and probably have their hands tied, they might even want the same features we've waited for. But that doesn't excuse the lie they told. O wait it's not a lie, they're hiding behind the 'We didn't say when' BS π
Nah what you just got was a red tape response which translates to "We have another broken AF killer to release (Coming from a Nurse main!) and money to make before we bother supporting a platform our current players politely waited for after being told, YES we'll support it"
Means absolutely nothing but I'm uninstalling on console (which is awful BTW!) and just playing other games at this point. What a slap in the face.

Thank you for sending a respectful request. Topics surrounding Linux gaming can get a little toxic at times.
They promised support and have choose to give zero updates to their paying customers, Is that not toxic? I'm not saying being toxic over a game is right, not in the slightest. But they haven't exactly painted themselves in the best colour, never mind Linux users.

Honestly, what is the deal?
Rule number one of any good games studio is communication. The radio silence is just off putting at this stage.
Steam deck has shipped 1 million+ units. That's a decent sized market to support alone, never mind Linux users in general like myself.
I switched to Linux after putting up with years of MS rubbish. Now I can't play one of the few multiplayer games I still enjoy and the developers/publishers/community managers just don't seem to care. If you didn't promise Steamdeck support it would be fine, We'd have to deal with it. But the fact you told us it would happen then just ignore it, is insulting. Let's not even get started on how easy it is to actually implement!
Forget the red tape and give us an update....
We are paying customers, some of use have spent hundreds on this game. At least respect us by giving us some type of update.
