Should all (or at least some) of the killers not have downsides to their power?

With some of the flashlight changes happening it does feel like some other killers might need changes to their abilities since most killers don't have direct negatives to their power (besides some of a slight recovery period like wesker missing a grab etc). I'm primarily thinking about Trapper how his own traps can stun him. His own traps harming him seems to go against most of the other killers who aren't punished as much by their own power and he's already one of the weakest killers.

Anyone agree? Disagree? Think other killers need some love?

Nurse should for sure keep her stun though imo

Leatherface I do think could use a change. Reduce his stun (it does feel a bit excessive) but also consume all remaining tokens (not sure if this already happens tbh) and increase the cooldown of the chainsaw before he regain tokens.

  • I think Trapper's just makes sense logically so it would feel a bit weird if it didn't work that way. Also his grunt is funny.

I think a lot of killers "power going against them" stems from balancing.

Example : Legion not seeing scratch marks and pools of blood while in Frenzy. It gives them counterplay as you can easily lose a Frenzying Legion if they start using their power too early. Otherwise, it'd be too easy to catch up to a survivor and slash them.

Or Ghostface being able to be revealed. Otherwise he could just keep stalking forever and get consistent one hit downs.

I think all killers should have counterplay, but not necessarily have downsides to their powers.

  • The fact that trapper's own traps can stun him has always been absurd. He's already a weak killer, he doesn't need more weaknesses.

In general, I think that killer's powers shouldn't have downsides. Even stuff like the knight not being able to see survivors while he's placing a line, while they can see him is insane to me. Killers should be a threat. Their powers should be dangerous. Survivors having to work harder to avoid their powers isn't the end of the world, I mean look at identity V, that game goes absolutely insane with killer powers. If you brought any killer from that game over to DBD, even the lowest tier ones, they'd be considered absolutely broken, and yet, that game works fine, despite both it and DBD being functionally very similar games.

There's nothing wrong with killer powers making survivors sweat a little, but the moment a survivor comes out that's even a little rough to deal with, survivors scream from the rooftops and they get nerfed. Look at what happened to pyramid head back when he was able to fake his power. He felt great to play back then, but now? Nope. It was too much, that had to go.

  • If any killer needs downsides, it should be a part of the power itself in my opinion, and not tied to having a specific item. Example being how Hag's traps can be wiped away in general instead of before having to bring a flashlight.

I don't think it's fair for killer powers to be negated from being used at all when a survivor uses an item or perk. This should be applied to all killers for consistency, such as Adrenaline no longer countering Freddy's dream world effect by waking up survivors, and any other perk or item that still negates killer powers.

Yeah i think I agree with this. Having specific items counter is kinda weird. I do like the idea of a killer having some downsides to their base power but not necessarily be punished by their power (generally speaking).

For example nurses stun makes a lot of sense to me although I'm not as into Trapper stepping on his traps. I think Trapper having to set up his traps is enough of a downside to his power and stepping on them is too much.

Although I do think it's weird that trappers traps impact him while freddy and Hag don't trigger their traps. I do find it a bit illogical that he would step on his trap thqt he laid lol (granted that's in the players control but still lol).

I do agree killers should have counter play in their base kit (like Trapper can have his traps disarmed is great) but I think him triggering his own traps is a unique weakness to him (and other killers have some similar example but others don't at all)

Petition to make Trapper be able to walk over his trap, but with like, a super exaggerated animation where he slowly steps over the trap like a cartoon character.

  • I think it’s fine for certain drawbacks to killer powers to exist especially if they are there to punish a mistake/misuse of their power. But downsides and counterplay shouldn’t come directly as a result of flashlights (or any other item) or perks. Stuff like the ability to see bear trap auras with maps should be removed, as well as Adrenaline pulling you out of the dream world.

Also, just to clarify on Leatherface, he already does lose all of his charges if he tantrums and they don’t begin recharging until the tantrum ends. So by default you have to wait for the tantrum and then afterwards it takes another 12 seconds to replenish all 3 charges (4 seconds per charge). You don’t have to have all 3 charges to use the chainsaw though.

Ahh okay that's what i thought it was. I'd like to reduce the tantrum time, keep consuming all the charges, but prolong the recharge and he has to fully recover all charges before his power is used. Ir does feel a bit excessive for how long he tantrums imo

  • With regards to Trapper, you need only experience a few instances in which Trapper boxes himself in with a Survivor to see why he shouldn't be allowed to casually waltz through his traps. He'd become the new king of camping with Bloody Coil and Secondary Coll.
