A possible bug.
I believe it affects both killers and survivors, but I've only seen it with survivor! Whenever you press tab and exit, the sound becomes really quiet and has to ramp back up. I'm not sure if this is a feature or a product of the Tab menu quieting the game in the first place, but it feels really weird. It doesn't feel very good because the ramp up time takes quite a bit to finish and it can hide important sound queues when you need them most. It's not really a "well don't press tab then", cause you can't really know when a stealth or undetectable killer is coming towards you, for instance.
