Trickster's delusions' too many errors of Korean culture depctions and orientalism

The stage is set in "The delusion world of a Young Korean Killer," but it is currently being criticized on the Korean Internet for its incredible Korean grammar errors, awkward fonts, and Chinese and Japanese-style cultural representations. Therefore, there is also criticism that it is the influence of Western-style Orientalism, which considers Korea as a chimera of China and Japan due to its lack of knowledge of Korean culture.

The most noticeable thing is the round orange lanterns hanging randomly in the market. There is criticism that it imitates the cliche that media set in China which is full of Chinese lanterns hanging in houses or markets.

Circular lanterns are also found in Korea. However, they are only used in Buddhist terms, in temples or street, or Cheonggyecheon stream, in national event liek Yeondeung-hoe to celebrate Buddha's birthday.

And they are necessarily hung in many different colors, not only in circles, but also in squares, octagons, and more. They are not hung in the market at any season like in China. The lanterns are hung in markets or streets only during the holidays to commemorate the birth of the Buddha around April to May.

Buddhist temples are the only places to see these lanterns all year round.

But those round orange lanterns in map's market area, without this Buddhist context or variety of colors or forms, just seem to mimic the clichés that are full of lanterns in the media set in China.

If they wanted to use lanterns that are often seen in Korean markets and daily life in every season, they should have used Cheongsachorong. Cheongsachorong has also many colors,(https://news.nate.com/view/20211017n13292), almost of all are red and blue.

And out of the context, Japanese posters and ramen vending machines were also criticized as "not only insincere but also racist" in Korea. Ramyun vending machines are commonplace in Korea, ramen vending machines no exist. It was a mistake they wouldn't have made if they had searched K-pop Demon Hunters for what Huntrix ate. And there aren't Japanese posters everywhere in Korea, unless it's a Japanese restaurant or an otaku shop.

'낡은'(Old) is an adjective. In English, adjectives are quite common used like title or noun, (for example, the movie Frozen, the title of the game Uncharted), but in Korean, it is very unnatural to use only adjectives without a ending or noun.

It must be fixed to "낡아빠진 새끼"(a worn-out bastard), Or they should add nouns after adjectives to make them into noun phrases. It shows that the production team doesn't have a understanding of Korean grammar.

'신선한 새 음료'(Fresh New Drinks)

This word is an example of a truly boring, machine-translated Korean word. Sentences such as '신제품'"new product" or '새로 나왔어요'"new released" fit better.

소다 산딸기(Soda Raspberry)-?????

And "Soda" is never used exclusively as a product name. Consider it common sense. Is there a drink in the world that just has the name " Cola"?

"산딸기 소다" or "라즈베리 소다(both means "Raspberry Soda") suits better for product name. Like 데미소다(Demisoda) of donga-otsuka.

It's a basic font for Microsoft word documents, very boring to use as a city entertainment sign.

image.png image.png

'불에 타 죽다'(Burn of Death)

It's just a verb that means 'to be burned to death'.

Curse abusive sentences like '불타 죽어버려!''Burn to death!' are more appropriate.

image.png

'길의 끝'(End of Road) is also unnatural.

'벼랑 끝에 섰어'("I stood at the edge of the cliff.") is more natural.

'맛있다'(It's delicious) '맛보세요'(Try it)

"They guys didn't translate it properly. Please hire some Koreans for translation."(by streamers)

One of the results of a typical 'mechanical translation'.

최고의 별미! (the finest delicacies) 존맛!(Fuxxing Delicious) is more natural.

"Who sells mackerel at a convenience store?

image.png 코-히(コーヒー) is japanese word means coffee.

Korean world for coffee is "커피". It is one of the evidence that the makers of this map may not have distinguished Japanese and Korean as well.

image.png

"Who puts ketchup and mustard in Korean convenience stores?

And which convenience store has iron chopsticks? Convenience stores are not restaurants.

The convenience store doesn't look like Korea. It looks like an American convenience store."

image.png

"Why is mango the only fruit sold in the Korean market? Mangoes are grown in the south in Korea, but they are not this dominant fruit. Why are there no apples, persimmons, tangerines, oranges, chinese pears(nashi), or grapes, only mangoes?

"에세이어(????) 노트르(???)비빔밥(Bibimbap) 시그니처(Signature)"

a meaningless word that cannot be translated.

r/deadbydaylight - Trickster's Delusion's awkward problems(part 2)

"In everyday Korean restaurants, we don't include kimchi on the menu. It's just a free banchan(side dish) that we eat together at every meal, but we don't order it as an independent menu."

"Who puts kimchi on the menu? It's not a dish, it's just a banchan. Who sells banchan independently in korean restaurants? Isn't it natural that all restaurants have to offer kimchi for free?"

r/deadbydaylight - Trickster's Delusion's awkward problems(part 2)

"엄청난 할인""A huge discount"

I'd rather recommend words like 대박세일"daebak sale" or 사장님이 미쳤어요"owner's crazy." That's too much of a mechanical translation.

r/deadbydaylight - Trickster's Delusion's awkward problems(part 2)

"And who uses the word 불청객"uninvited guest" these days?"

"Isn't 진상 "jinsang(customer from hell)" much more used in korean society?"

"가성비 상품" "cost-effectiveness product" -> "최고의 가성비" "Best Cost Effectiveness"

"주요 제품" "Major Product" -> "자사 최고 인기 제품" "maker's most popular product" or "핵심 제품""key product" or "대표 제품""representative product"

"현지 제품" "Local Product" -> "국내 제품""domestic products" or "Made in korea" or "순창 생산 보증" guarantees of the production in Sunchang

"전통 요리법" 'Traditional Recipe" -> "전통 그대로의 맛" "Traditional taste itself"

r/deadbydaylight - Trickster's Delusion's awkward problems(part 2)

"Convenience stores in Korea don't store lunch boxes in the this kind of freezer box. This is an ice cream machine or box for frozen foods such as chicken and mandu."

"Street stalls(pojangmacha) don't have sales or discount event like this. "

품점(x) -> 품절(sold out)(wrong hangul spelling)

즐겨찾기(favorites, bookmark on web brower)(x) -> 인기 상품(popular products), 추천 상품(recommended product)

r/deadbydaylight - Trickster's Delusion's awkward problems(part 2)

양면가치(double sided value) (x)

양가감정(ambivalence) or 선과 악(good and evil)

In addition, there are so many other problems such as awkward Korean translation and awkward fonts that young Korean singers would never like.

The reason why this map is problematic is that it has been following many of the cultural incomprehension and orientalism issues that have appeared in the media depicting Korea abroad for decades so far.

Selling Japanese and Japanese food out of the blue, especially in places that are not even Japanese restaurants. (If they wanted to include Japanese food found on the street in Korea, they should have added takoyaki food trucks instead. However, considering the bad feelings of the two countries, do they have to add Japanese food to the map that represents Korean culture?)

And hanging red or yellow only round lanterns on the streets that do not go well with the daily landscape of Korea, but looks simillar more to china. Koreans are tired of this orientalist fallacy of portraying Korea as a chimera of China and Japan.(Age of Empires 2, Cloud Atlas, Agents of Mayhem, LOST, SOULCALIBUR, Batman Arkham Origin's Baekdu mountain's NInjas, Umbrella Academy's Hongkong-like seoul metro and Chinese soup spoon, etc….)

And awkward Korean expressions without the help of professional Korean translators, and advertisement posters and signs written in Microsoft Word basic fonts. (Like Call of Duty Advanced warfare's hangul sign fonts, Korean dialogues and pronounciations in LOST, Black Panther's busan lady's bad korean pronounciation, blah blah blah…)

It's all a problem that has been repeated for decades in countless, in foreign media lacking knowledge of the Korean language and Korea.

A serious question for the production team. To repay the love and interest of Korean gamers for this game, could you please hire a consultant who is really good at Korean and has a lot of knowledge of Korean streets to modify the visual design of the map?
