Fan-made Killer Concept – Shapeshifter (Deception-based Killer)

Hello!
This is a fan-made killer concept created purely as a design exercise and for discussion purposes. This is not a request to add the character to the game, but an exploration of mechanics, balance and counterplay within Dead by Daylight’s design philosophy. I’d love to hear feedback from the community.

Shapeshifter is a deception-based killer focused on psychological pressure rather than direct chase strength.
The killer can temporarily take the appearance of survivors, simulate survivor actions such as repairing generators or healing, and punish blind trust through delayed consequences instead of immediate damage.
The design emphasizes information management, team communication, and observation as counterplay, using limited resources (special flashlights) to reveal the killer and disrupt its power.
This concept is intended to explore how deception and false safety could function in Dead by Daylight without removing counterplay or teamwork

Shapeshifter is a killer focused on deception, distrust, and psychological pressure. Its power allows it to change shape and adopt the appearance of survivors in the trial.

To transform into a survivor, Shapeshifter must first store that survivor’s identity. An identity is stored by maintaining direct line of sight on a survivor for 5 consecutive seconds. Line of sight must be uninterrupted; if it is broken, the timer resets. Each stored identity remains available for 2 minutes. Once this duration expires, the identity is lost and must be stored again.

While the power is active, Shapeshifter can change its appearance at any time, transforming only into living survivors whose identities have been stored. During transformation:

  • Shapeshifter cannot attack
  • Shapeshifter has no Terror Radius
  • Movement speed is reduced to 4.0 m/s
  • Shapeshifter fully mimics the posture, animations, and visual behavior of a real survivor

While transformed, Shapeshifter can perform survivor actions such as repairing generators, healing other survivors, or healing alongside them. These actions reproduce the normal in-game sounds, making them indistinguishable through audio. However, no real progress is made: generators do not gain progress and healing actions do not restore health states. All such actions are simulations intended to deceive survivors, waste time, and create a false sense of safety.

Survivors who interact with Shapeshifter while it is transformed—by repairing a generator together, being healed by it, or healing alongside it—begin to accumulate a special mark. When this mark is fully filled, the survivor enters the Exposed status effect and remains Exposed until hit by the killer.

Shapeshifter may cancel its transformation at any time. When doing so, a short transformation animation plays, Shapeshifter returns to its true form, its 28-meter Terror Radius reappears, and its movement speed increases from 4.0 m/s to 4.6 m/s, allowing it to immediately begin a chase or ambush.

At the start of the trial, special chests spawn throughout the map. These chests contain a special flashlight with two or three uses. The flashlight is consumed both when aiming at the transformed killer and when accidentally aiming at a survivor, briefly blinding them. This forces survivors to carefully manage flashlight usage. Aiming the flashlight at the transformed Shapeshifter for 2 consecutive seconds immediately cancels its transformation and blocks its power for a short duration.

Counterplay against Shapeshifter relies on observation, communication, and intelligent use of these special flashlights. Survivors can detect deception by noticing generators not progressing, healing actions not advancing, or by revealing the killer with the flashlight. Shapeshifter is not a killer built around constant direct pressure, but one that punishes blind trust, disrupts team coordination, and turns paranoia into its primary weapon.

Perks

1.Suspicious Reflection

Whenever a survivor sees the killer’s aura through any effect, the killer sees that survivor’s aura for the same duration. This effect applies only to the survivor revealing the aura and ends when the aura reveal ends.

2.Deceptive Progress

Each time the killer hooks a survivor, the generator with the highest progress that has reached at least 95% progress automatically explodes, loses progress as if damaged by the killer, and becomes blocked for 10 / 12 / 14 seconds.

3.False Last Safety

When an exit gate is opened and the Endgame Collapse timer is active, a Hex Totem spawns somewhere in the map. While this totem remains active, both exit gates are blocked and all survivors gain the Exposed status effect for 40 / 50 / 60 seconds, or until the totem is cleansed.

Add-ons

-Flashlight Add-ons

Some add-ons increase the time required to cancel Shapeshifter’s transformation using the special flashlight, extending the duration needed to reveal the killer while transformed.

-Accelerated Marking Add-ons

Some add-ons reduce the time required for survivors to accumulate the Exposed mark when interacting with Shapeshifter while transformed. Variants exist that affect only generator repairs, only healing actions, or both.

-Exposed State Add-ons

Some add-ons apply additional effects to survivors who are in the Exposed state, preventing them from healing other survivors and reducing their generator repair speed by 5%.

-Iridescent Add-ons

One Iridescent add-on allows the Exposed mark to be completed instantly when two or more survivors interact with Shapeshifter while it is transformed, provided the survivors have interacted for at least 4 consecutive seconds and the killer has remained transformed for at least 6 consecutive seconds, with a cooldown between activations.
The other Iridescent add-on increases the speed at which the Exposed mark is accumulated by 25% during all interactions with Shapeshifter while transformed.

  • dude, the problem with a killer who can shapeshift into survivors in DBD is the fact that there are friends with mics, all it takes is one of them to say 'that's not me' and your identity is already exposed.

Trust me, I already had your idea before, I'd imagined Himiko Toga from My Hero Academia as a killer in DBD. didn't go well.
