why are people under the impression that dbd is p2w?

edit: how do i move it? didnt see the discussion option, accidentally posted it in suggestions.

saw some people tried to drag dbd for being p2w and characters taking 40 hours to unlock, trying to defend ow2 when it gets compared to other games with a battlepass and fremium system.

but i was like THE most powerful killer is in the base game, and every killer following her are all either can all be unlocked for free. Blight, Huntress, Artist, Spirit and Billy (at least until his rework) are some of the most powerful killers and most of them are on the base roster. Meanwhile the paid only license characters are all kept in check sitting in middle of most killer rankings.

that "40 hours" to unluck is only if you earn the character/cosmetic currency (iridescent shards) is only if you get those currency from just playing but you also earn the iri shards from gaining exp for leveling up your account and you get a bonus for your first matches of the day which is basically a free level up in the lower tiers.

not forgetting to mention that you get shard rewards for simply login in, which happens almost every other month now and then you have community event for special holidays. which greatly cuts the amount of time you actually have to spend unlocking new characters to a more reasonable 20-30 something hours.

Oh and on the battlepass, you don't have characters in them and don't have spend like time grinding the new characters on top also getting enough currency for like a 3rd of the year trying to get premium currency.

and you only buy it ONCE because it gives you back your currency at the end.

if you play dbd enough to be able to unlock characters for free, you probably spent enough time to play the game to be able to finish it and the challenges on your own time.

And since you only have to buy it ONCE and you can pretty much get every new battle pass that comes out for many years to come read that is the norm for a modern live service game, I've only had to spend the equivalent of $5 USD on the battle pass system since the first rift came out. and it is all optional and doesn't effect gameplay.

and on the subject of perks, almost all of the good and popular perks come from base roster or free killers but especially on the survivor side. sprint burst, dead hard, unbreakable, borrowed time, selfcare (before the nerfs) and nowadays boons and off the record. were all on free characters.

Comments

  • They say it because some of the perks/survivors/killers are locked behind paywalls. It's not true, but that's the only thing I can think of.

  • sorry i put this in the wrong category. how do i move it?

I've taken care of that for you. For next time, all you need to do is flag the post (as if reporting yourself) and that sends it to the moderators - you can add a comment to the report to explain that you posted in the wrong category.

    thank you sm

  • There is an argument to be made for the survivor side, but so long as Nurse remains as she is, the killer side cannot possibly p2w.

    Perks.

  • yyyyep. The moment that a perk from licensed content becomes hard meta, the p2w argument starts making the rounds again. Personally I feel it doesn't really have any standing on any content that is not licensed (like the nurse comment,) but once you put in mandatory paywalls, it creates a different dynamic entirely. OVERALL I think the game is not P2W, even though newer dlcs will often have content that becomes meta, thats to be expected. When you have any type of "play to unlock" system, it becomes extremely important that no content that requires payment ever feel necessary to have an even chance with ones who do. In games like League for example, champions are never locked behind RMT, even on release day, and only elements that don't directly affect gameplay (like skins and cosmetics) are.

While I'm extremely grateful at the amount of content that is play to unlock in this game, I feel like that diligence gets ignored too often, especially regarding perks. And ESPECIALLY because the meta shifts: by the time you purchase sadako and get call of brine to help with gen defense, the perk could be gutted months later and your purchase did nothing to help even when it was your sole reason for making the purchase. The only way to really prevent it within the current model is to make sure all licensed content is good but not good enough to be meta, and to have consistency with its strength in relation to the game. Otherwise it'll keep skirting that P2W line each time licensed content is too good (or the buyer beware line every time it is too bad.)

  • I think people have a point. If Decisive Strike was still meta you could claim the same thing, as it comes only with a paid DLC (Laurie Strode).

After people complained about camping killers, the answer was Reassure belong to Rebecca who is also a licensed DLC character. The same can be claimed about her perk Hyperfocus, which is geared towards gen-rushing in a way to counter gen-slowdown.

If you don't like getting camped and people tell you to use Reassurance what are you expected to do? The only slightly similar to it is Kinship maybe. Camping at 5 gens is still a problem, but tunneling off the hook has been somewhat addressed with the basekit BT changes.
