Cryptocurrency is just a fancy name for currency an electronic currency. Ever since we went fiat it's basically the same. Crypto just has the benefit of not being regulated by any government, essentially making the crypto currency makers their own government of their own currency (which people apparently don't understand).

One day the internet funny money will be regulated and will no longer fluctuate wildly

Id imagine the US government would at least try to regulate it
