Monitor and Abuse, and head starts by the numbers
Ive always wondered just how “good,” Monitor was so I finally sat and got the correct (I think) numbers for how much of a head start survivors can get with and without it. This would assume they run as soon as they hear the heartbeat and correctly get which direction you’re coming from.
Killers who are 4.6 / 115% speed with a 32 m terror give the survivor a 6.95 second head start... with MA a 24 m terror gives them a 5.2 second head start.
Killers who are 4.4 / 110% speed with 24 m terror five a 5.45 second head start and with MA and a 16 m terror they give 3.63 seconds head start.
Finally Myers is 115% and in tier two had 16 m terror so he gives a 3.48 second head start, with the Dead Rabbit his terror is 12 m so it’s a 2.61 second head start, with MA his terror is 8 m so it’s a 1.74 second head start, with Dead Rabbit and MA it’s 6 meters so that’s a 1.3 second head start... if you can block sight you’ll be on top of them practically.
Of course Huntress and Freddy are a bit different, and some killers do have louder footsteps or even quieter heartbeats it seems. But this was something I did for myself so I figured I’d share.

That is a really quite interesting. There's also a secondary effect to take into consideration, especially for 32m killers: cockiness. Survivors will often wait til they think you're close enough to be a real danger before they run, and even in the rare circumstance where they peg you having M&A they often underestimate how much distance you gain.
Dude, math posts are the best - you deserve a vote up <3
Yeah, especially with things like a Sprint burst, or if they feel they’re at a safe loop working on a gen.
Thanks, the numbers part of DBD always interests me
Your numbers are right but this idea of a head start doesn't mean much, because in your numbers you assume the killer's destination is at where the survivor started running from, when the useful information to know is how long it takes to reach the survivor.
In this case, it takes a 4.6m/s killer ~53.3 seconds to catch a survivor holding W with 32m of starting distance between them, and 40 seconds with 24m of starting distance between them.
For 4.4m/s killers, it's 60s with 24m starting distance, and 40s with 16m.
From this you can clearly see the utility of M&A; it can literally shave off minutes of chase time across your various chases in a trial, but this is under ideal conditions. Results will vary.
Yep I almost went into that as well, but like you said so many factors there to consider. Also I think someone did a really detailed post a while back about how long the second chase would take considering the 2 second speed boost after hit, etc
