Red Herring is underrated

This perk is amazing for distracting the killer for fairly long periods of time (up to 30 seconds in my experience, depending on how stubborn the killer is). Here's a recent example:

My SWF teammate and I were playing against a Legion with two other players in SWF. The other two were just terrible, constantly running toward the Legion and didn't seem to realize he quite obviously had Discordance.

Thanks to Red Herring, though, I managed to get the killer to go to an empty area a few times while we worked on gens on the opposite end of the map.

We lost because one of the other SWF died and the remaining one just stopped working on generators, but that's survivor gameplay for you.

  • Nobody disagrees that it's not a useful perk in SWF.

  • To me it's fairly useless unless that's the next gen I've got to patrol. I won't instantly go to a gen because it blew up. I'll continue to patrol up until I get to that gen.

What it is great for is blowing up a gen just as the third survivor is sacrificed. You're giving the killer a false location which gives you more time to find the hatch.

How would it have worked any differently if we weren't SWF? That area of the map was still empty, everyone was still working on generators on the other side of the map.

Playing solo you don't know where exactly your team is at. You might get ready to trigger the perk, and a non-suspecting teammate of yours will stumble on that gen, and you'll give out his position to the killer for free. As soon as SWF is in play, you have at least one pair of eyes more that can tell you if they saw the rest of the teammates anywhere.

  • I prefer Diversion, it is more versatile despite its long "cooldown" and limited range.

Even as a solo survivor, there are ways to know where your team is. Aftercare, for example, which works really well with the Legion's playstyle.
