    The hatch was not built by the Entity. That's all we know.

    It’s just speculation, but there is an idea that an unseen survivor named Vigo might have built it. I believe she’s referred to have made tools to fix the generator and dismantle the hooks. The game may have worked much differently before Vigo made the tools. Vince go is also quoted on the Light Born Perk where they recognize how the monsters adapt and evolve in this place. So we do know that Vigo has a perceptive and mechanical and creative mind.
